We are living in a comfort zone, we don’t want to take risk, when we are coming out of
the comfort zone and not take calculated risk then we are not achieving our goals. Risk is
life even it’s personal or professional when we are not taking risk then we are not
achieving our goals.

The society of women is the foundation of good manners; of course a pre-requisite to

achieve brilliant results especially for success in business. The increasing trend developed
among the women to be self-employed suggests that time is not far away when women
factor would also have an important role in the economic growth of the country.
Possessing the natural gift of politeness, women entrepreneurs, and if provided the level
ground, are expected to bring new milestones to this country.

We have a successful story of CEO of TANEEZ, “ZEENAT SAEED AHMAD”, and

Taneez has become a big name, may be a great symbol.
Zeenat Saeed,a lady of grace and dignity in her every gesture. According to her education
she did BA from St. Joseph's College in English, History, during the years 1957 — 1960.
Now she is the President of Pakistan Association of Women Entrepreneurs (Karachi) and
Vice President SAARC Women Entrepreneurs Council is an active businesswoman
running her business of silver platted wares (taneez) at Park Towers.

Taneez was born in 2000, as the brain child of zeenat saeed and produced mainly silver
plated home accessories. It was a little boutique. She paid Rs 250 in rent for the outlet and
made everything herself. Then slowly she expanded. She had a very supportive family
and with everyone encouraging me, the expansion was a success, but then it died on her.
She started working with clothes; her customers liked the clothes and asked her to go to
Paris with us. In Paris she had to lie that she had this fabulous factory back home to get
orders. Business continued in this manner for the next 25 years. Then she thinks everyone
is familiar with the rest of the story.

Zeenat while talking to PAGE regretted that overall conditions are not supportive for
economic growth in Pakistan. Currently dealing in artistically made silver platted gift
items, household wares and accessories, precious decorative items etc, despite having
rich business experience is afraid of spreading her business due to what she called the bad
conditions. She recalled that once she had started the export business in textile garments
and more than 400 workers were earning their bread and butter were associated with her
business. However thanks to the law and order conditions, ethnic and sectarian forces
accompanied by bad laws forced her to wind up the business and made her a defaulter.
She said with a sense of pain that she was still clearing the backlog of the bank loans that
is the price of the venture she has to pay.

According to Zeenat saeed when she started her new business, she thought that she wants
to make a lot of money by buying and selling things, she said that most of the women
started her business as a hobby but she didn’t started her business as a hobby, only she
wanted to make a lot of money, actually she thought that if you didn’t need business, then
you would not take any interest and not make profit. Her business basically started from
an exhibition, according to her “I started out by holding exhibition in Karachi and
Lahore, which is how we introduced our pieces to the customers. The response was
excellent. The sales at the time were one tenth of what they are now. But now, we have
four shops two in Lahore two in Karachi, and one opening in Islamabad. I think we sell
the most jewelry in country because we have the largest stores.” she did hard work for
progressing her business. For starting her business she took loan from everyone, even she
went to her employees and servant and borrowed money, most of the people gave twenty
thousand, some gave three thousand by this way she collected money and then made one
outlet in park tower, through this borrowed money and few capital of stock which are
very small in quantity she started her business. She cannot forget first month progress,
then her business grew rapidly and presently she has five outlets.
Basically the silver-ware and the ‘naqsheen’ was a dying craft. She has given it a new
lease in life, so it’s good for everyone; her workers only had one room with 12 people
living in it, but now they all have their own houses. They have their own cell phones,
means of transportation and things have improved for every one over all.

She designs jewelers for very single piece takes about eighteen hours a day, its basically
just designing the silver-plated ware. A lot of things get easy after a while, she tend to
know her customers and the girls give her feedback and the boys in the crafts section tell
her what they like and what they don’t.
She gets the inspiration from internet also visit antique markets all over the world to pick
up little things that she can copy. It doesn’t necessarily have to be silver; she can even
pick it up in wood or porcelain. According to her we keep innovating and we keep
looking for things, now people are surprised that she has things that they hadn’t seen in
Pakistan before. For her, sky is the limit and she can go on working. At home, her father
was a great influence because he always said that everything had to have a special dish,
so that influence is still on her thoughts when she designs.

All products are designed by Zeenat and produced by seasoned craftsmen. And, after the
success in the local market, she hope to export her products, as the reviews and
compliments she receives from local and foreign buyers has encouraged her to seek yet
another height by going worldwide. All her crafts are stamped “Taneez Pakistan” and this
will help in showcasing our products abroad.

According to her “You walk into Taneez and instantly but pleasantly are blinded by the
opulent glitter of silver. An array of vases, bowls, candle stands, trays, planters, ice
buckets, wine chillers, photo frames, salt and pepper shakers, urns, champagne flutes,
fruit bowls, water goblets, jewel boxes, dip dishes, duck bottle openers, match boxes,
ashtrays, serviette holders with semi-precious stones - to name just a few of the several
items. The household range is very impressive.
As eyes adjust to light, one is bowled over by the sheer scale of design and creativity. An
attractive pencil holder with what looks like an agate; a semi-precious stone artistically
embedded in the metal. A delicate soap tray with floral soaps nestling on it; you look
further and admire the orchids frothing out of an exquisite planter - it's the silver planter
that's for sale - the orchids, like the floral soaps are there simply to indicate the usage of
the item."

Her achievement is to forecast the new trends in gift business and take a century’s old
craft and contemporizes the look to fit in present day lifestyles. Then came the pure
sterling silver collection of home and personal accessories this is now it’s in infancy as
she is evolving new ideas in our designs and as quality is an issue, she has to be in
competitive in the market. Some of it is embellished with semi-precious stones in unusual
shapes.

When we are asking that in Pakistan, there are lots of Gold trends; most of the people like
to invest in gold, even in marriage ceremony, why you are selecting different line, like as
Silver, what motivated you?

She replied that the Gold made things is not as attractive as the Silver made once.
Through this unique and different idea her business progressed by leaps and bounds and
gets lots of appreciation.

Outlook

Someone has rightly said that man has his will — but woman has her way. This is what it
is exactly in the field of business where a considerable number of women entrepreneurs
have made their way to success, while many more are in the pipeline. The present
government is also giving due priorities to the womenfolk in the economic, social and
political policies. Our young business graduates have new ideas and zeal to work also, the
only thing they lack is the financial support. The need of the hour is that our financial
institutions should provide financial support especially to the business graduates so that
instead of wasting the talents in employment they should be provided opportunity to be
their own boss. This would certainly reduce the pressure of unemployment in the society.
