You must show all of your work for each problem in order to receive full credit.

Minitab should be
used when specified. HW should be turn in electronically.

HW Due 02/06/2017, at the beginning of the class. Homework will be considered late after 2:15 pm on
the due date.

CH 1: 1.8, 1.23, 1.24, 1.25 **(to answer this questions use the data given and your calculator),1.39, 1.40.

CH 2: 2.5 (book page 33), 2.10 (page 37), 2.18, 2.23, 2.34, 2.77, 2.80

1.8:

a) 40 students from the class

b) 3 students who stayed after class

c) No, they arent random theyre students who may have intrinsically had issues with the exam, so
they thought the exam was unfair by default.

d) No she shouldnt use the 3 students opinions to represent the whole class, because the opinions
dont represent the average opinion AND theyre not even randomly selected.

1.23:

Mean: 10

Standard Deviation: 1.581139

1.24:

a) Mean wouldnt change

b) Mean: 10

c) I think the mean would increase by less than 1.0. The mean ends up increasing to 10.1 because we
have 13 instead of 12 this causes the mean to increase by 0.1.

1
1.25:

a) I dont think the standard deviation would change.

b) The Standard deviation changed from 1.58 to 3.16. Most likely due to the difference of the numbers
from the mean

The standard deviation ended up changing from 1.58 to 3.15. This is probably because of the difference
of the numbers from the average. The highest and lowest numbers of the new set are both further
away from the median and mean hence they deviate more.

1.39:

a) No, because it isnt guaranteed.

b) Yeah, its very likely

1.40:

a) The error margin would be bigger for a sample of 10, because the sample size is much smaller.

2.5:

a) Itd be important to know who is the source of the information, the percentage of college students
who actually want to get the bookcase, and ultimately how many college students have actually
purchased the item.

2.7:

Whether quantitative or qualitative, an experiment ultimately has to be objective. Because this study is
so clearly subjective, it is more of a survey than an experiment. Because the reasons that one person
might feel full (or not full) might have more to do with their own physiological and mental perspectives
than with actual variable of apple juice and apples.

2.18:

a) This is definitely wrong: men and women have biological and physiological factors that make them
different one another and this can cause differences in experimental results. The experimental error
would be too high.

b) Cant rely on the prospect that it would be divided in half completely

c) All of the experiments have to occur at the same time (not weeks after each other), otherwise there
isnt any randomization.

2
2.23:

a) Factors are the varying doses of vitamin D and calcium, as well as the two different genders of
subjects, as well as the ages of the subjects, and there are probably endless other factors with regards to
the individual characteristics of the subjects (i.e. race, exercise, etc.)

The treatment consists of 0, 200, 400 mg of Calcium and 0, 50, 100 mg of Vitamin D

b)

c). Randomization: 7, 6, 9, 6, 12, 15, 7, 14, 11, 4, 10, 16, 14, 9, 9, 3, 6, 4

2.77: The subjects responses are confidential not anonymous. Anonymity implies that the subject
gives no personal information in the participation of the survey. However, the GSS interviews take place
in the subjects homes which is obviously personal information. Hence the information is confidential,
because certain personal information is given for participation but it is not shared.

2.80

a) Yeah it definitely violates that principle.

b) Its only within principle of the consent was affirmed.

c) Yeah its okay if the patients permission was acquired
