The Ideal Hospitality Leader

The ideal hospitality and tourism leader is one who can encourage genuine drive
in others. Ideally, I will be a leader who has earned respect through my integrity,
values, actions, competency, and reliability. A leader in the industry is one who
exhibits traits beneficial to their self, the company, their teammates, the
customers, and the environment. Considering all stakeholders and doing
everything possible to make the best decisions is what makes a leader
successful. Someone who can be depended upon, someone who can be looked
up to, someone who can empower others, someone who can consider others,
and someone who can control their emotions can make a great industry leader.

Career Goals

My dream career in the long term is one in which I am excited to attend work. I
must be able to share my career with loved ones. This career will, ideally,
provide enough to sustain my partner, our pets, and myself in a comfortable loft.
A must-have is the ability to travel, whether it is through work or with acceptable
vacation conditions, so long as I will be able to afford about two trips a year. My
career will remain interactive and keep me engaged. While it would be nice to
have holidays off, not a necessity. A dream career would be as an owner of my
own hotel or business revolving around experiences for others. I want to not live

1
an extravagant life, but to be comfortable and be able to enjoy some of lifes
extravagances for myself and for those around me.

Five years after graduation, my ideal position would be one of senior

management in a hotel or experiences company while living with my partner and
sharing our lives.

By the time of graduation, I would like to earn a spot in a management training

program with a company that best aligns with my values then.

Other Goals

1. I will earn a job with a company in which I can prosper for myself and for it.

2. I will learn to control my emotions better, specifically relying less on others for
my own happiness.

3. I will interact more with Carl Winston, Christina Jeffreys, and those who can
help guide me to make decisions to keep me on track with my life plans.

SECTION TWO: REFLECTIONS

________________________________________________________________

Simulations

My strengths throughout the simulations centered on my emotional maturity and

environment scanning. I was able to remain professional and help guide others
through remaining on task while assessing the environment and addressing any
lacking roles. My weaknesses revolved around a lack of passion. Since I was
unpassionate about the task at hand, I did not care much to be one of the firsts to
input their opinions. This made it seem as though I was allowing others to do
most of the work until the few points in which I became more passionate for the
task and therefor more involved. From the first to the second simulation, I
ensured to hit each mark that I was assigned to address. I focused on excelling
on each benchmark while still trying to keep a cooperative and fluid group
environment. Most of the improvement was in my understanding that I needed to
be each role even if someone else had already taken up that role because I too
need to exemplify said role.

My Perception and the Perceptions of Others

Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned in the time of this semester has been
that I have control of my outcomes and of my emotions. I learned that I am

2
capable of recognizing what needs to be done and that I must be the one to take
charge of what happens from that point. I learned that I have allowed myself to
feel bored, indifferent, and at times noncaring in situations which I should be
finding ways to make it more exciting and if not that then at least somehow
beneficial to me. I learned that I need to find ways to make myself happier on the
inside and not just show face as what is done during a shift after a bad personal
day. I do too much for other and not enough for myself. That needs to change.

Develop Activity Ideas

Development activities are customized mini projects that students design to

enhance one or more of their competency areas. A typical development activity
takes 10-20 total hours to complete during a semester. Development activities
help students move closer to their idealized vision as leaders. Students
customize development activities to take place in their own learning spaces
school, work, social clubs and other personal settings. It may be helpful to review
the list of starter ideas on the following pages as well as the student created
website Kaleidoscope Resources. In the table below, list 5 development activity
ideas (project titles) that will help you develop one or more competencies,
provide an opportunity to enhance your leadership, and/or help achieve a goal.
At least one of your activities should also help move you in the direction of your
dream job. The first row of the table is filled in as an example.
