To Whom It May Concern:
It has been a pleasure to work closely with Jarett Zentner during the time he has been here as PSIII teacher.
During his time here I have observed his class on a number of occasions. Both formally and informally I have selected four of
the Knowledge, Skills and Attributes (KSAs) as a focus.
1. "The purposes of student assessment. They know how to assess the range of learning objectives by selecting and
developing a variety of classroom and large scale assessment techniques and instruments. They know how to analyze the
results of classroom and large scale assessment instruments including provincial assessment instruments, and how to use the
results for the ultimate benefit of students".
The challenge for all young teachers is to understand and implement good assessment and to then know how to use the
information to move learning forward. As a PSIII, Mr. Zentner has had the responsibility to teach our grade 9 social Studies
class that will be involved in the the PAT later in the year. As I have observed Mr. Zentner, he has developed a variety of
assessment strategies, he works to know his students and where they are at, he has targets for them and works to help them
reach these targets. He reviews classroom assessment and provides feedback to students to see that they know where they
are at in reaching learning goals. He also uses the learning to reflect on his practice and how he can improve in instruction of
his students.
2."The importance of contributing, independently and collegially, to the quality of their school. They know the strategies
whereby they can, independently and collegially, enhance and maintain the quality of their schools to the benefit of students,
parents,community and colleagues".
This has been an area of great strength for Jarett, as he has worked hard to be part of the school. He has worked to develop
relationships with his students, and understand who they are. He has worked to know each of them on a personal level. He
has spent time working with the school councilor to maintain communication with students, parents and school leaders in
order to help the student be successful. He has been involved in school professional development, divisional professional
development and reflection of his own professional growth plan.
3."The importance of respecting students human dignity. They know how to establish, with different students, professional
relationships that are characterized by mutual respect, trust and harmony".
During the observations of Jarett, it is easy to see that Mr. Zentner cares about his students. He wants them to be successful.
His assignments are designed to improve and motivate students to be better in their personal lives. He works to understand
the background of his students and works to motivate them to move forward. He builds on their personal experiences and
background knowledge in order to help move their learning forward. During observation it is easy to see that students work for
Mr. Zentner. They come to class, and are involved in the class. They work to be successful for him. They have a shared
respect for each other. Students are always welcomed and invited to be in and attend class. The classroom is a welcoming
and safe place to be.
4."There are many approaches to teaching and learning. They know a broad range of instructional strategies appropriate to
their area of specialization and the subject discipline they teach, and know which strategies are appropriate to help different
students achieve different outcomes".
During my observations of Mr. Zentner this has been an area of growth. Jaret, has worked to develop a range of instructional
strategies, for a range of students that he has been assigned to teach. During observations I have witnessed him use a variety
of strategies. They include: direct instruction, cooperative learning, student led activities. Jarett plans ahead to meet the needs
of his students and engages them on whatever level they. The assignments are designed to allow for student growth and
success.
