Subject: Science
Witches Brew: Dry Ice
Topic: States of matter

Essential Question: What change of matter does the dry ice go through? What is sublimation?

Standards: 2-PS-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of
materials by their observable properties.

Learning Objectives and Assessments

Objectives Assessments

SWBAT explain the phase of sublimation Students will explain the phase verbally

Prior Knowledge: Students know the three states of matter and will be familiar with the phases
of melting and freezing. However, may be unfamiliar with the phase sublimation.

Lesson Beginning: Teacher will be asked to put on their lab coats and come to the carpet. The
teacher will read Which Ways to Witch School? Teacher will tell the students we will be making
our own witches brew using dry ice.

Instructional Plan
Teacher will hand out experiment worksheet and clipboards.
Teacher will ask the students why they think dry ice is called dry ice and have
them record their answers. Teacher will explain the rest of the worksheet.
Teacher will do the demonstration with dry ice while students stand around the
table watching and making their observations.
Students will go back to their seat while the teacher explains what sublimation
is.
Students will finish answering the questions on the worksheet.
Students will then create their own Witches Brew recipe.
Differentiation: The worksheet includes drawing their observations, as well as writing
their observations to satisfy different learners. There will also be opportunities for
talking/working with partners for students who may be struggling.
Questions
Why is dry ice called dry ice?
What does the dry ice look like before/after it is dropped into water?
What is it called when a solid turns into a gas without going through a liquid
stage?
Classroom Management: The teacher will use classroom protocol and enforce the
classroom rules.
Transitions: Teacher will give students reminders about timing. Teacher will use
clapping and the chime to gather students attention.

Conclusion: Students will write on an exit slip one thing they learned during the lesson. If time
permits, students will go on their chrome books and play the game States of Matter for a
review.
