0 PROCEDURE
1.1 Equipment Preparations
1. The base of the equipment and weight balance was ensured balanced by using the
spirit level at the four corner of the base. The bubble was ensured located in the
middle position of the spirit level.
2. The collecting plates and the pre-filter (the honey combed like filter) was ensured
cleaned as described in section 3.2 and they are free of dust because there is no dust
that block the surface of the plates
3. All the plugs are disconnected from the power supply. And also we make sure that
all the switches (the on off switch and the circuit breaker switch) on the equipment
are switched off because the equipment is using high voltage electricity. Thus,
precaution step is needed to prevent accident.
4. The ionizing power supply cable of Cable 1 and Cable 2 was ensured not damaged.
5. The feeder valve was closed before starting the experiment.

1.2 Sample Preparations

1. The feeder was dismantle from the equipment. The cover was take off and been
weighted. The feeder was filled with 50 grams of kaolin powder.
2. The feeder was closed back with its cover.
3. The feeder was attached back to the clamp and the PU tube was connected to the
tube fitting near the feeder valve.

1.3 Experimental Procedures

1. The pre-filter was put in the equipment and they were locked to prevent them from
falling.
2. The feeder was connected with the compressor tube.
3. The main power supply of the equipment was connected. The equipments balance
was plug in and had been switch on. The balance was reset to zero.
4. The cleaned collecting plates was put into the chamber of equipment from the top
door.
5. The collecting plate and front door was connected by using a cable as shown in
Figure 5.
6. The front door was closed, the panel box was reassemble and the ionizing power
supply cable was tight.
7. All the grounding cables was properly connected.
8. The weight balance were reset to zero. The reading of the weight balance had been
take note because it represent the initial value of collected particle, m1.
9. The electrostatic precipitator switch (ESP) on the panel was switched on. The
blower and voltage switch were switched on. When the blower be turned on, the
electrostatic effect start to take place.
10. Solid green light on the panel box were indicated the good condition of running of
electrostatic precipitator whereas flashing green light indicated short circuit of
collecting plates and they were been noticed.
11. The flashing green was shown, the ESP switch that located on the panel were
switched off. We waited for 3 minutes for the electrical charge on the equipment to
disappear and we reposition the collecting plates. The collecting plate were not too
close to the equipment walls and the door to prevent from short circuit.
12. Steps 8 to 10 were repeated until solid green light was shown by the panel box.
13. The air compressor was switched on by switching on the pump switch on the panel.
14. The feeder valve was adjusted so that the kaolin powder flows steadily in the inlet.
The kaolin powder was let to flow for about 15 minutes the inlet tube was always
checked and we also knock a bit the feeder container if the kaolin powder is stacked
there.
15. After 15 minutes, the compressor was switched off, and the electrostatic precipitator
were turned off. We had wait for about 5 minutes for the electric charge to
disappear.
16. We let the balance to be stabilized and then we take the reading of the balance. The
reading taken was the mass of collected particles, m2.
17. The collecting plate was took out and had been put aside.
18. The collecting plate, pre-filter and the chamber were cleaned from kaolin powder.
19. The experiment was repeated with corn flour.
20. The efficiency of the equipment was calculated by using the readings obtained. The
efficiencies between kaolin powder and corn flour was compared. The efficiency of
the machine had been calculated by using the formula below:
, 2
, % = 100%
