INTRODUCTION
TRACKING OF MAXIMUM POWER POINT OF PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY IS USUALLY AN
ESSENTIAL PART OF PV SYSTEM. IN GENERAL , PV GENERATION SYSTEM HAVE TWO
MAJOR PROBLEMS THATS EFFICIENCY OF POWER GENERATION AND AMOUNT OF
POWER GENERATE BY SOLAR ARRAYS WHICH CHANGE CONTINUOUSLY WITH WEATHER
CONDITIONS . THE V-I CHARACTERISTIC IS NON- LINEAR AND VARIES WITH
IRRADIATION AND TEMPERATURE . THERE IS UNIQUE POINT ON V-I OR P-V CURVE OF
THE SOLAR ARRAY CALLED MPP, AT WHICH ENTIRE SYSTEM OF PV GIVES MAXIMUM
EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCES MAXIMUM POWER OUTPUT. PV system can be divided into
three categories .

1. Stand alone
2. Grid connection
3. Hybrid systems

For places that are far from conventional power generation system , stand alone
power supply system can be considered as an good alternative. MPP is a
technique used commonly with turbines and photovoltaic solar system to
maximize power extraction under all conditions. PV solar system exist in many
different configurations with regard to their relationship to inverter systems ,
external grids , battery banks and other electrical loads .

1
APPLICATION
The major principle of maximum power point tracking is to extract the maximum
available power from PV module by making them operate at the most efficient
voltage .
MPP checks output of PV module , compares it to battery voltage then fixes what
is the best power that PV module can produce to charge the battery and
convert it to the best voltage to get the maximum current into battery .it can
also supply power to a dc load , which is connected directly to the battery.

MPP is most effective under these conditions;

1. Cold weather , cloudy or hazy days : normally it works better at cold

temperature and is utilized to extract maximum power available from them .

2. When battery is deeply discharged: MPP can extract more current and charge
the battery if the state of charge in the batteries is lowers .
A MPPT is dc to ac convertor which operates by taking dc input from PV module ,
changing it to ac and converting back it to different dc voltages and current to
exactly match the PV module to the battery. Examples of ac to dc convertor are
1.Boost convertor
2.Buck convertor .
Mppt algorithm can be applied to both of them depending on system design.

2
APPLICATION
1. It is used to correct for detecting variation in the current voltage
characterstics of solar cell.

2. It is necessary for any solar power system need to extract maximum

power from PV module.

3. MPPT allows users to use pv module with higher voltage output then
operating voltage of battery system.

4. It reduces complexity of system while output of the system is of high

efficiency . additionally, it can be applied to use with more energy
resources.

5. It can be applied to other renewable energy sources such as small water

turbines , wind power turbines e.t.c
