Course Description:
This course expands on previous studies in CAM 1 to include computer assisted programming using the APT language
and progresses to computer aided programming using Siemens NX software. Emphasis is given to the creation of
drilling and milling programs of increasing difficulty starting with simple prismatic shapes and continuing to more
complex free form shapes. NX programs will be developed using both the traditional user-driven approach and also
with an emerging automated feature-based approach.

The laboratory component of this course provides practical experience in the Integrated Manufacturing Lab where
programs that have been created can be set up and machined.

Subject Eligibility for Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition

(PLAR):
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process a student can use to gain college credit(s) for
learning and skills acquired through previous life and work experiences. Candidates who successfully meet the
course learning outcomes of a specific course may be granted credit based on the successful assessment of their
prior learning. The type of assessment method (s) used will be determined by subject matter experts. Grades
received for the PLAR challenge will be included in the calculation of a students grade point average.

The PLAR application process is outlined in http://www.durhamcollege.ca/plar. Full-time and part-time students must
adhere to all deadline dates. Please email: PLAR@durhamcollege.ca for details.

Notes:

1. Tests will be closed book.

2. Tests will consist of a written portion and a performance portion which is done at a lab computer. With the
expectation that a student will attend all classes, there will be no make-up tests for missed tests. Students
missing a test will receive a mark of zero. All final test marks will stand.
3. Test dates are tentative and will be confirmed by the professor.
4. Tests will be written at the beginning of that week's scheduled lab class unless otherwise notified by instructor.
5. Exercise activities occur in class and will only be given once. They cannot be made up or supplemented. Any
missed in-class activities will be assigned a mark of "0".
6. Weekly labs are to be submitted on the due date at the top of the hour before the beginning of lab class, unless
otherwise directed by the professor. Late assignments will be accepted until 10 minutes past the hour, but, a
late penalty of 25% will apply. Work will not be accepted past that point without a prior arrangement,
acknowledging a heavy penalty in keeping with the importance placed on deadlines within the workplace
environment.
7. All submitted work in this class will involve a partner and/or group work. If a student cannot work collaboratively
with their partner or group that student will receive a grade of "0" for the submitted work.

Durham College Course Outline - CAM 5132 - 2017-2018 Page 5 of 15

8. The quiz will be a multiple choice format and will be done on the student's own time using DC Connect.
9. A final exam will be held during exam week. The final exam will be closed book.
10. Questions are similar in format to those given on class tests, however, the scope of the exam covers the entire
semester.

Course Specific Policies and Expectations:

Behavior

- Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that respects the right of their peers and the instructor to
learn and work in an environment that is safe and free of distraction.

- No class discussion, written submission, email or oral presentation will contain sexist, racist, discriminatory or
pornoraphic material or language.

- The use of cell phones is not permitted in class.

- At the discretion of the instructor, students not meeting the above standards may be asked to leave the classroom.

Attendance

This subject is primarily practical in nature and conducted in a lab. Regular attendance is important for success and
the student is expected to attend all classes. When absent, the student will miss important concepts, work time on the
exercises and contact time with the instructor. If a student is absent from class, it is his/her responsibility to catch up
on missed work prior to the next class.

Projects

Students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the course material by applying it to assigned
projects.

Weekly Homework

There is a large amount of information to cover in this subject so students are expected to spend time outside of class
hours to complete homework. Homework provides an opportunity for students to become actively engaged in their own
learning. Homework will not be evaluated. However, quizzes and tests are based in part on the homework that is
assigned.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given regularly. They will cover information presented each week and also from the assigned readings.

Midterm Test

Material for the test will be taken directly from the material presented in lecture class and from assigned homework.

Final Exam

It is typically 2 hrs in length. Questions are similar in format to those given on the midterm test, however, the scope of
the exam covers the entire semester.

Academic Dishonesty

It is not difficult for the professor to detect when students have copied from others. If this happens, all the students
involved will receive a mark of zero. Details of the incident will be forwarded to the Dean. The Dean will determine if
further action is necessary. Consult the student handbook for the college wide policy on this subject.
