I attended an emergency civilian mass casualty training. The Medical Reserves Corp
presented over various topics including; active shooters, blood control, and emergent disaster
situations. With recent current events in mind, a large chunk of the course covered active
shooters. They discussed how to handle a situation of that type, when the right time is to take
action, hide, or escape. We engaged in discussion and answered practice questions. The educator
had brought tourniquets and other disaster preparedness equipment with them. We had the
opportunity to practice correct tourniquet placement on one another, as well as become familiar

handle emergent situations. I now have more tools in my tool belt. I can draw from the
gut.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I would recommend it. While I didnt agree with some of the bias comments made, I do
feel as though the more information you have, the better prepared you will be in the case an
event happens near you, your family, or friends. I dont think there is such a thing as being too
prepared.

I attended a basic bleeding control course. The Integrated Community Solutions to Active
Violence Events (ICSAVE) presented the information. This organization is supported by the
American College of Surgeons, as well as The Committee on Trauma. Their aim is to educate the
public on basic life saving bleeding control techniques. We learned about triage, how to assess a
patient in emergent circumstances (i.e. what life threats to look for), and various methods of
bleeding control. After the presentation, time was given to practice different placement of
tourniquets, both oneself and others, pressure bandages, and wound packing techniques.

The program was held at the College of Medicine, and it was four hours long.
This experience was of particular value because of my interest in trauma, and the desire
to work in areas that may not have all the needed medical supplies. Fieldwork is an area I feel

I would recommend it. It was mentioned often throughout their presentation that this
information is given to us so that we can go out and educate others. Correct, timely placement of
a tourniquet or applied pressure to an actively bleeding wound, could be the difference between
life and death. Emergent situations can happen anywhere at anytime, and I feel as though
everyone who is capable of helping should be well prepared to do so. I enjoyed that the
instructors continually quizzed us, and ran through practice scenarios the entire time. Great class!
