Heavy metals are commonly found within chemically made cosmetics. One problem that

is mainly directed in this article is how these heavy metals cause dermatitis, also known

as eczema. This was commonly seen on women using eye products. Whether it was the

use eyeliner pencil, mascara, or eye shadow, it still resulted in itchiness of the eyelids.

This is applicable to all college students because not only were these toxic metals

absorbed from eye products but they were also found in skin, hair, and nail products. In

some products, the levels of heavy metals are less than others but it still raises concerns

of health related issues. Cosmetics that are naturally made are more reassuring, trusting,

and less of a worry to use for college students.

Callahan, J., Dollemore, D., Giuliucci, M., Haigh, J., & Kirchheimer, S. (1995). New Choices in

Natural Healing (pp. 3-8). Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, Inc.

At the beginning of this book, one statistic shows that in 1993 Americans spent $1.5

billion on herbal medicine. It may seem costly but in that same year, $13.3 billion was

spent on over-the-counter drugs and the price keeps increasing as the years pass. The

book offers insight from experts on how conventional medicine can be dangerous,

expensive, and sometimes not effective. They present options to the reader in hopes to

break the cycle of dependency towards conventional medicine.

When it comes to college students, the means to attain conventional medicine isnt

always accessible because of how great of an expense conventional medicine can be. The

act of the student becoming dependent on conventional medicine can often lead to

negative effects, such as addiction. By applying a more herbal, natural approach to these

health needs, students will be able to take a safer, effective, and affordable path in the

personal health.

Chadron State University has a page on their website where they share national statistics

on mental health. Charon State University collected their statistical information from

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). One statistic read that one in four adults

between the ages 18 to 24 are diagnosed with a mental illness, the most common being

depression and anxiety. It is said that these two forms of mental illness are the reasons for

poor performance on academic projects, and because of these reasons, students stop

attending college. The page expands on the importance of the student seeking help in

understanding and knowing their emotional disability that they are experiencing.

Studies show that the lack of certain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and

minerals are major contributors to mental illnesses. The major cause for depression is

found with the lack of magnesium. Patients that consumed 125-300mg of magnesium

with each of their meals and taken before bedtime, showed a quick recovery in major

depression. Omega-3 fatty acids can be used for most mental illness, including anxiety.

Anxiety and depression can be treated with herbal medicine because it will provide the

vitamins and minerals necessary for health brain function. Herbal medicine or remedies

are easy and convenient for college students because plants and herbs usually contain

chemicals that the human body needs; this means that by simply consuming the right

fruits, vegetables, or teas, these imbalances will stabilize.

Herbal products that are used cosmetically are typically much safer and healthier for skin.

Synthetic chemicals that are used it most cosmetics are harmful and toxic to the skin. A

common element found in synthetic cosmetics is coal tar; it is used for pigmentation and

has been associated to be a cause of cancer. Working in a completely opposite way,

herbal cosmetics are made entirely out of plants. The properties within these plants can

provide nutrients to skin, act as an antiaging mixture, and aid in health care. Herbal

products have less to zero negative side effects and can be used for nearly all skin types.

With college students normally being on a tight expense budget, sometimes it can be hard

to look and feel your best. Herbal products are cheap and safe, making them not only

accessible for the student but also less of a concern to use.

The article states that the price for prescription drugs are expensive; directing this

information towards college students, buying medication can become a difficult task

because there is a budget that must be met for these students. Not only would they have

to worry about how theyll be able to afford medication but they will need to consider all

possible side effects that come with the drug. There are undesired side effects that come

with modern medication, some that can lead the student to feeling uncomfortable at

school. The treatment with this type of medication also requires a long course of

prescription medicine, which can interfere with the students class schedule. This method

of treating anxiety only adds to the difficulty of finding a solution to the problem,

whereas the purchasing and use of herbal medicine can lessen the stress for college

students.

Sajah Popham emphasizes how herbal medicine involves the body, mind, and spirit; once

these three components are met, a balance is created within the body which will promote

physical and mental health. An issue that Popham expresses about modern medicine is

that it suppresses symptoms, an example he gives is with the flu, instead of fixing the root

of the problem. He explains that the root of an illness, either physical or mental, is

more likely found in the digestive system. With herbal treatment, Popham claims that the

body is able to work more efficiently and effectively because it is working with a natural,

more familiar substance.

Its commonly heard and seen that most college students dont have a healthy diet.

Popham states that people can relieve themselves from headaches, allergies, anxiety,

depression, and anything related by simply adjusting their diet; that is by incorporating

more natural substances.

(P. Overton, personal communication, October 27, 2017).

Patricia Overton received a Bachelors degree in Herbal Science from Bastyr University,

and in this degree she learned about the connection between body, mind, and soul; alike

to this, she believes the mind is powerful; it can often stop or promote the individuals

healing. Overton shares several cases where she would aid a couple of her friends by

helping them with daily sickness such as food poisoning, a cold, painful Gastrointestinal

upsets, and even help those with anxiety or sleeping problems.

Overton suggested that college students who are going through large amount of stress

should use adaptogens, which helps in both stress and keeping the immune system active.

One other suggestion was to add herbs to foods which can promote extra health benefits.

By incorporating herbal remedies to their daily routine, college students will be able to

find great ease when doing so when following guidelines from people like Overton.
