Introduction Units and Dimensions Laws of Mechanics Lamis theorem, Parallelogram and
triangular Law of forces Vectorial representation of forces Vector operations of forces
-additions, subtraction, dot product, cross product Coplanar Forces rectangular components
Equilibrium of a particle Forces in space Equilibrium of a particle in space Equivalent
systems of forces Principle of transmissibility .
Objective:
To make the student understand the vector operations, laws of mechanics and the concept of
equilibrium of particles in space. Also equivalent system of forces and free body diagrams are to
be dealt with.

Free body diagram Types of supports Action and reaction forces stable equilibrium
Moments and Couples Moment of a force about a point and about an axis Vectorial
representation of moments and couples Scalar components of a moment Varignons theorem
Single equivalent force -Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in two dimensions Equilibrium of Rigid
bodies in three dimensions
Objective:
To make the student gain knowledge on fundamentals of moments and couples. Equilibrium of
rigid bodies in two and three dimensions are also to be discussed.

LESSON PLAN
Sub Code : GE6253 LP Rev. No: 00
Objective:
To make the student know the concept of centroid, first moment of area and second moment of
area for various sections. Also polar and mass moments of inertia and their practical applications
are to be dealt with.
LP GE6253
LESSON PLAN
Sub Code : GE6253 LP Rev. No: 00
Objective:
To make the students understand the interaction between external forces and resulting
acceleration on bodies with relation to rectilinear and curvilinear motions. At the end of this
chapter the student would have gained knowledge on work energy, impulse and momentum and
impact of elastic bodies.

Friction force Laws of sliding friction equilibrium analysis of simple systems with sliding
friction wedge friction-. Rolling resistance -Translation and Rotation of Rigid Bodies
Velocity and acceleration General Plane motion of simple rigid bodies such as cylinder,
disc/wheel and sphere.
Objective:
To make the students understand the concept of frictional forces, Laws of friction and the effect
of frictional force on belt and rolling resistance. Also the student will learn the fundamentals of
rigid body dynamics in which velocity, acceleration and general plane motion are to be dealt
with.
* Friction topics (sessions 56,57,58,59 and 60) will be taught after completion of the Properties
of Surfaces (Unit III) , since the knowledge of friction forces would be needed before the topics
on kinetics of a particle (Unit IV).
