Applications of Equations

Solve the following problems.

1. The total of two investments is $25,000. One amount is invested at7% and one at 9%. The annual interest from
the 7% investment is $470 more than from the 9% investment. How much is invested at each rate?

2. A wire of length 200 cm is cut into two parts and each part is bent to form a square. If the area of the larger
square is 9 times that of the smaller square, find the perimeter of the larger square.

3. Two cyclist A and B traveled the same distance of 120 kilometers. A traveled 4 kilometers per hour faster than B
and covered the distance in one hour less than B. Find the rate of each.

4. It takes Peter 6 hours longer than Luis to do a certain job. Together they can do it in 4 hours. How long would it
take each working alone to do the job?

5. An airplane flies 900 miles against a headwind of 25 miles per hour. The plane took 15 minutes longer for this
flight than with a tailwind of 25 miles per hour. How fast could the plane fly in still air?

Applications of Equations

1. The first number is 5 less than three times the second number. Twice the first number plus the second
number is 137. Find the two numbers.

2. One number is 3 more than another number. If three times the larger number is two more than four
times the smaller number, find the two numbers.

3. Two coin banks contain only dimes and quarters. There are 25 coins in the first bank. The value of the
coins in the second bank is $5, and it contains 5 fewer dimes and 3 more quarters than the first bank. Find
the number of dimes and the number of quarters in the first bank.

4. A landscaping company placed two orders with a nursery. The first order was for 13 bushes and 4 trees,
and totalled $487. The second order was for 6 bushes and 2 trees, and totalled $232. The bills do not list
the per-item price. What were the costs of one bush and of one tree?
