0 INTRODUCTION
Space mean speed is defined as the average speed of all vehicles occupying a given
section of a road over a specified time period. Space mean speed is required in order
to compute the accuracy of travel times.
2.0 OBJECTIVE
The objective for this test is to conduct the space mean speed by using a method of
License Plate Matching Technique.
The license-plate method requires the observers be positioned at the beginning and the
end of the test section. Observers can be positioned at the other locations if the elapse
time to those location are required. Each observer records the last three or four digits
of the license plate of each car that passes together with the time at which the car
passes. The reduction of the data is accomplishes in the office by matching the times
arrival at the beginning and the end of the test section for each license plate recorded.
The difference between these times is travelling time of each vehicle. The average of
these is the average travelling time on the test section.

6.0 DISCUSSION
Speed is one of the basic parameters of trac ow and time mean speed and
space mean speed are the two representations of speed. Time mean speed and space
mean speed and the relationship between them will be discussed in detail in this
chapter. The relationship between the fundamental parameters of trac ow will also
be derived.
The average speed of a traffic stream computed as the length of roadway segment
divided by the total time required to travel the segment. Space mean speed is required
in order to compute accurate travel times. The distance from first and second
checkpoint is 0.1 km.

Time Mean Speed = Average Speed = n
Space Mean Speed = =
Whereby:
We collected the total of plate number recorded and time for each of the plate
passed point A and B. The amount of matched plate number at point A and B was 29.
The time mean speed gained from the data is 44.56 km/h as it act as average speed
with the total speed, v was divided by number of observation, n. The space mean
speed gained from the data is 6.04 km/h as the distance travel, d was divided by total
of travel time of vehicle, t divided by the number of observation.
They were several errors that occur during the experiment. Some possible random
errors in this experiment is the slight variations in the degree of the eyes angle while
record the cars passing through the checkpoint. Other than that, time to hit the
stopwatch when the cars passing through the checkpoint is random error.
7.0 CONCLUSION
Time Mean Speed (TMS) and Space Mean Speed (SMS) are two important
measures of traffic speed. From the experiment, we experienced that it is easier to
collect TMS of the vehicles in the field as compared to their SMS.
The distance of from point A to B is 100m. Table 1.0 shown that the total of
plate number recorded and time for each of the plate passed point A and B. Table 1.2
shown the matched number of plate of vehicles. The amount of matched plate number
at point A and B is 29.
The time mean speed gained from the data is 44.56 km/h as it act as average
speed with the total speed, v was divided by number of observation, n. The Space
mean speed gained from the data is 6.04km/h as the distance travelled was divided by
total of travel time of vehicle, t divided by the number of observations, n.
