RE: Agenda Items 17-0891, 17-0892 and 17-0893 that have to do with Accessory Dwelling Units
(otherwise known as Granny Flats)

Honorable City Council Members and Mayor Garcia,

Recent attendance at the Outreach sessions on the topic of the Land Use Element drew record crowds
at two separate venues. The dialogue at those events clearly leaned in opposition to plans to increase
density in our City. Accessory Dwelling Units are yet another way to add density and in this case, in
our residential neighborhoods.

I object to the plans put forth in the agendized items noted above that would change the zoning in our
neighborhoods and allow for multiple residences on a property currently zoned as single family. The
resulting impact to traffic and parking is unwelcome and undesirable. More people also means more
crime. As noted in the other forms of density currently proposed for our City, there would be a
negative impact on our infrastructure and resources such as water, police, fire, electrical etc.

I would like to direct your attention to an article by Laura Lindgren that describes how other cities
have at the very least limited the footprint of the Granny flats. Long Beach intends to allow 1000ft
dwellings to be added to residential lots inviting two families to live on a lot currently built for one
family and without plans for additional off-street parking. Although these units are dubbed Granny
Flats, indicating they will be occupied by elderly family members, there is no restriction on who can
live there. As long as the property owner lives on site, the unit can be rented out to anyone for one or
more months at a time

There is no good reason to go down this path to creating a miserable living circumstance and spread it
across our entire city.

I would not be inclined to give my vote to a council person that voted in favor of Accessory Dwelling
Units (Granny Flats) as the plan is currently proposed, nor would I support any public servant
including the Mayor, that does not take an interest in the quality of life for the residents in our city. I
expect that I am not alone in that perspective.

Sincerely,

Corliss Lee
