PART-A

1. Explain how an inductor and capacitor behave for a D.C. Source
2. Name the various methods of excitation of D.C. Generators.
3. What is the condition for maximum efficiency of a transformer?
4. Define slip and slip-speed in an induction motor.
5. Draw the voltage wave forms of half wave and full wave rectifiers.
6. Mention the applications of D.C. Servo Motor.

1. a) Find the value of current i in the circuit using star-delta transformation.

b) Explain Kirchhoffs Laws with suitable examples. (5M)


2. a) Derive the e.m.f. equation of a D.C. Generator. (4M)
b) A 6- pole D.C. Motor has a wave connected armature with 522
conductors. The flux per pole is 20 mwb and the armature has a
resistance of 0.13 ohm. Calculate the speed when the motor is running
off a 240 v D.C. supply and taking an armature current of 80 amps. (8M)

3. a) Derive the equation for regulation of a transformer. (6M)


b) Explain with neat diagrams the production of rotating magnetic field in a
3-phase induction motor. (6M)

4. a) A 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor has a rotor resistance of 0.1
ohm per phase and the stand still leakage reactance of 0.8 ohm per
phase. If the full load slip is 5 %, determine the full load torque as a
percentage of maximum torque. (6M)

b) What are the main parts of an alternator? Explain its operation with neat
diagrams. (6M)

5. Explain the construction, operation and application of Stepper Motor. (12M)


6. a) Explain the operation of bridge rectifier with the help of a circuit
diagram. (5M)

b) Explain the operation of a SCR and draw its V-I characteristics. (7M)
