Name: Rachel Keefe

Grade/Subject: 7th Grade/Math

Unit Essential Questions:

What are fractions? How do you convert fractions to decimals? How do you write a
repeating decimal? How do you convert decimals to fractions? How do you simply
fractions and decimals? Where do we see fractions in the real world?

Lesson Question:
How do you convert fractions to decimals?

Standard(s):
NextGen Learning Standard: 7.NS.2d) Convert a fraction to a decimal using long
division; know that the decimal form a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually
repeats.

Lesson Objective Assessment Tool Mastery Criteria

Students will accurately Worksheet from 80%
convert fractions to decimals Dads Worksheets (see attached)
using long division. Acquired from:
https://www.dadsworksheets.com/worksheets/fractions-as-
decimals.html

Opening:
Conversion Power Triangle Brainstorm
Conversion Power Triangle projected onto the board. Students split into groups of 4,
each given a different color marker. They have two minutes to fill in the missing
blanks. Only one member of each group can come up and add to the Power Triangle
at a time. D
Division *100, move decimal point two
places to the right
F P
Put % over 100, simplify
After sharing results in discussion. Explain that we will be focusing on the F D side
today.
Procedure:
Explain we will be learning how to convert fractions to decimals.
Show video from MathAntics (Fractions are Division):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xwDryouw6o
Summarize main findings using note-catcher (see attached) allow students to write on
the projector when called on
While handing out, ask students: What are fractions? What operation did Rob
say we use?
Review parts of a fraction diagram: What are the top and bottom number
called in a fraction? Talk with the person next to you. Write it down if you
have it. Share aloud after
Review how to read a fraction: What does this fraction say? What is
another way it can be read?
We know we are going to divide; we need to show all of our work. They will
not be so easy to divide so we need to do it the long wayusing long
division.
Review procedure for long division
D: Divide
M: Multiply
S: Subtract
B: Bring down
Practice on example 2/4: 4|2 = 4 goes into 2 zero times (D), 4*0=0 (M), 2-0=2
(S) 4|2.0 (B) 4|2.0 = 4 goes into 20 five times, 4*5=20, 20-20=0. 2/4 =
0.5
Give students time to try second example, solve as a class
Practice on example 3/8 : 8|3 = 8 goes into 3 zero times, 8*0=0, 3-0=3
8|3.0 8|3.0 = 8 goes into 30 three times, 8*3=24, 30-24=6 6
becomes 60 8|60 = 8 goes into 60 seven times, 8*7=56, 60-56=4
4 becomes 40 8|40 = 8 goes into 40 five times, 8*5=40, 40-40=0.
3/8 = 0.375
Individual Practice Handouts
Allow students who feel comfortable to get started, remainder of
students can work with teacher to solve the first example, converting
using steps from previous examples.
TIERED BY RESOURCES
Resources (see attached)
Calculator for all students (MUST still show their work first,
but may be used as to check results)
Multiplication Table for students struggling with multiplication
facts (available for all, if needed as reference)
Long Division Laminated Procedure for students who struggle
remembering long division or procedural steps
Closure:
Group Discussion
Ask students what operation was used to convert fractions to decimals
Ask students what they used to show their work
Explain that all of these examples were terminating decimal, meaning that they ended
Preview that tomorrow we will be discussing decimals that do not terminate, like .
Tell them after tomorrow they will be able to write a repeating number a shorter way
