Today we get to learn something new!
Objective: Today you will learn how to add 3-digit numbers with regrouping.
Definition of regrouping
Objective Purpose: This is an important skill for adding multi-digit numbers.
Prior Knowledge: (CFU) show me with your arm the direction of a column.
Reminder about other strategies for adding.

Demonstration:
The problem that we are going to work on today is 369+233=___. Where is
the ones column? (students point to ones column)
We are going to start in the ones column and add the numbers. Since these
numbers add up to 12 we cannot put the answer under that column. We will
have to put the digit in the ones place (2) in that column and carry the ten to
the tens column.
Now, I move to the next column which is the tens column. Now I will add all 3
of these numbers. Show me on your fingers what the sum of these numbers
is. (10)
Since this is ten or more we put the digit one under the tens column and add
the 1 to the hundreds column.
Now we add straight down the hundreds column.

Supervised Practice:
Together we are going to practice the problem 456+265=__.
Students write on boards
CFU (students circle the ones column)
Solve (students solve on their own boards)
Correct student errors

Independent Practice:
Students are given the problem 765+436=__ to solve on their own
whiteboard.
Give students Mastery Measure

Closure:
Today you learned how to add numbers with carrying.
Next class we will learn how to subtract multi-digit numbers.
Transition to writing group or back to class.

Black-up plan: Students who finish early will be given another addition problem
that involves regrouping.

Reteach: lesson will be done slower and use Manipulatives to help students
understand regrouping.

Mastery Measure:
