DEFINITION
- Is the aspiration of
secretions through a
catheter attached to
a suction machine or
wall suction outlet
 PURPOSE
1) Facilitate
ventilation
2) Obtain secretions
for diagnostic
purposes
 PURPOSE
3) Remove secretions
that obstruct the airway
4) Prevent infection that
may result from
accumulated
secretions
TYPES OF SUCTION
CATHETER
A. Open tipped
- more effective
for removing
thick mucus
plugs
B. Whistle tipped
- less irritating to
respiratory
tissues
Ways to
Suction
OPEN METHOD
-If a client is connected to
a ventilator, the nurse
disconnects the client from
the ventilator, suctions the
airway, reconnects to the
ventilator, and discards the
suction catheter
OPEN METHOD
-DISADVANTAGE: nurse
needs to wear PPEs to
avoid exposure to the
sputum and the potential
cost of one-time catheter
use, especially if the client
requires frequent suctioning
CLOSE METHOD -the suction catheter
OR IN LINE attaches to the ventilator
tubing and the client does
SUCTIONING
not need to be disconnected
from the ventilator.
CLOSE METHOD -nurse is not exposed to any

suction catheter is enclosed
