TENSES (FUTURE TENSE)

Slamet Riyanto said, Tenses are verb forms that show time. Generally, Tenses can be

divided into three (3) : Present, Past, And Future.

And in this essay, we will discuss about Future Tense. We use The Future Time if we

wish to express what will happen in the future.

There are four forms of Future Tense :

1. THE FUTURE TENSE


1.1 Definition
The Future Tense is a verb form that is used to express a willingness or
prediction or an action that is going to happen in the future.

1.2 Form

(+) S + Will + Verb-1 +


(-) S + Will not + Verb-1 +
(?) Will + S + Verb-1 +
For example :
a. (+) I will take an examination tomorrow.
(-) I wont take an examination tomorrow.
(?) Will you take an examination tomorrow?
b. (+) They will go to Papua next Sunday.
(-) They wont go to Papua next Sunday.
(?) Will they go to Papua next Sunday?
c. (+) The soldiers will be home tonight.
(-) The soldiers wont be home tonight.
(?) Will the soldiers be home tonight?
d. (+) He will telephone you next Friday.
(-) He wont telephone you next Friday.
(?) Will he telephone you next Friday?

We use will take, will go, will be, will telephone with : I, we, you, they, and he, she,
it, and all singular and plural subjects.

1.3 Note :
We can also use be going to + Verb-1 to to express a plan, for example :
a. I am going to invite a lot of guests.
b. I am going to visit her tomorrow.

1.4 Time Signals


Time signals that are usually used :
a. Tonight
b. Tomorrow
c. Next week
d. In the future
e. In ten days
f. From now
g. This weekend, etc.
2. THE FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE
1.1 Definition
The Future Continuous Tense is a verb form that is used to express an activity
that will be in progress at time in the future.
1.2 Form
(+) S + Will be + Verb-1 + ing + .
(-) S + Will not be + Verb-1 + ing +
(?) Will + S + be + Verb-1 + ing +
For example :
a. (+) I will be coming tomorrow.
(-) I wont be coming tomorrow.
(?) Will you be coming tomorrow?
b. (+) The guests will be arriving at this time.
(-) The guests wont be arriving at this time.
(?) Will the guests be arriving at this time?
c. (+) You will be working with them.
(-) You wont be working with them.
(?) Will you be working with them?

We use will be coming, will be arriving, will be working with : I, we, you, they,
and he, she, it, and all singular and plural subjects.

1.3 Time Signals


Time signals that are usually used :
a. At this time tomorrow
b. Next week
c. Next month
d. Until + S + Verb-1
e. When, etc.
3. THE FUTURE PERFECT TENSE
3.1 Definition
The Future Perfect Tense is a verb form that is used to express an action that
will be completed before an another event or a certain time in the future.
3.2 Form
(+) S + Will + Have + Verb in Past Participle/Verb-3 + .
(-) S + Will not + Have + Verb in Past Participle/Verb-3 + .
(?) Will + S + Have + Verb in Past Participle/Verb-3 + .
For example :
a. (+) I will have graduated from ITB by the end of June.
(-) I wont have graduated from ITB by the end of June.
(?) Will you have graduated from ITB by the end of June?
b. (+) Lisa will have eaten pizza.
(-) Lisa wont have eaten pizza.
(?) Will Lisa have eaten pizza?

We use will have graduated, will have eaten with : I, we, you, they, and he, she, it,
and all singular and plural subjects.

3.3 Time Signals


Time Signals that are usually used :
a. By this time next week.
b. By June
c. By next month
d. By next year
e. By 2025
3.4 Note :
Adjunct can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the sentence, for example :
a. By the end of this month, I will have graduated from Gadjahmada University.
b. I will have graduated from Gadjahmada University by the end of this month.
4. THE FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE
4.1 Definition
The Future Perfect Continuous Tense is a verb form that is used to express :
a. An action that will be in progress before another time or event in the future, for
example : I will have been sleeping for two hours before my wife gets home.
b. An action that emphasizes to continuity of a future achievement, for example : I
will have been teaching here for fifteen years this year.
4.2 Form
(+) S + Will have + been + Verb-1 + ing + .
(-) S + Will not have + been + Verb-1 + ing + .
(?) Will + S + have + been + Verb-1 + ing + .
For example :
(+) You will have been studying English for five years by then.
(-) You wont have been studying English for five years by then.
(?) Will you have been studying English for five years by then?

We use will have been studying with : I, we, you, they, and he, she, it, and all
singular and plural subjects.

4.3 Time Signals


Time signals that are usually used :
a. For three hours at that time.
b. Two hours by six oclock.
c. The whole time.
d. Too long by that time.
5. PAST FUTURE TENSE
5.1 Definition
Past Future tense is a form of the verb in the English language to discuss the
future from the perspective of the past. This tenses can be used to declare an event or
action to be performed (voluntary or planned), making estimates or predictions, and
make an appointment in the future at the moment is in the past.
5.2 Form
a. (+) S ( I/We) + Should + Verb-1
(-) S (I/We) + Should not + Verb-1
(?) Should + S (I/We) + Verb-1?
b. (+) S ( You/they/he/she/it) + Would + Verb-1
(-) S ( You/they/he/she/it) + Would not + Verb-1
(?) Would + S (You/they/he/she/it) + Verb-1?
For example :
a. (+) I should swim
(-) I shouldnt swim
(?) Should you swim?
b. (+) He would swim
(-) He wouldnt swim
(?) Would he swim?
5.3 Time Signals :
Time signals that are usually used :
a. Last year
b. Last week
c. Before
d. Next day
6. PAST FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE
6.1 Definition

Past Future continuous tense is a form of the verb to express what will being
done in the future when it was in the past.

6.2 Form
a. (+) S (I/We) + Should + be + Verb-ing
(-) S (I/We) + Should not + be + Verb-ing
(?) Should + S(I/We) + be + Verb-ing?
b. (+) S (You/They/She/He/It) + Would + be + Verb-ing
(-) S (You/They/She/He/It) + Would not + be + Verb-ing
(?) Would + S(You/They/She/He/It) + be + Verb-ing?
For example :
a. (+) We should be swimming.
(-) We shouldnt be swimming.
(?) Should we be swimming?
b. (+) They would be swimming.
(-) They wouldnt be swimming.
(?) Would they be swimming ?
6.3 Time Signals
Time signals that are usually used :
a. This morning
b. Yesterday
c. Last night
d. Last week
e. Soon
7 PAST FUTURE PERFECT TENSE
7.1 Definition
Past future perfect tense is a form of the verb to discuss activities that would have
been done in the past.
7.2 Form
a. (+) S (I/We) + Should + have + Verb-3
(-) S (I/We) + Should not + have + Verb-3
(?) Should + S(I/We) + have + Verb-3?
b. (+) S (You/They/She/He/It) + Would + have + Verb-3
(-) S (You/They/She/He/It) + Would not + have + Verb-3
(?) Would + S(You/They/She/He/It) + have + Verb-3?
For example :
a. (+) I should have gone to campus.
(-) I shouldnt have gone to school .
(?) Should you have gone to school?
b. (+) They would have eaten.
(-) They wouldnt have eaten.
(?) Would they have eaten?
7.3 Time Signals
Time signals that are usually used :
a. Next month
b. Next year
c. Tonight
d. Tomorrow
8 PAST FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

8.1 Definition

Past future perfect continuous tense is a form of the verb to discuss action that
would have lasted for so long at a particular time point in the past.

8.2 Form

(+) S + Should/Would + have been + Verb-ing.

(-) S + Should/Would not + have been + Verb-ing.

(?) Should/Would + S + have been + Verb-ing?

For example :

(+) I should have been studying English for a year.


(-) I shouldnt have been studying English for a year.
(?) Should you have been studying English for a year?
8.3 Time Signals
Time signals that are usually used :
a. By the end of this month

b. By the end of this year
