The students will solve addition and subtraction word problems.
The students will verbally solve basic addition and subtraction problems.
Assessment Summary (Danielson 1f)
Formative assessment: During the lesson, the formative assessment will include how well
the students answer classroom questions during the lesson, as well as how well they answer
the questions they land on during chutes and ladders.

Summative assessment: At the end of the lesson, the students will be assessed at how
accurately they complete the addition and subtracting Christmas Worksheet.
Prerequisite Relationships to New Learning (Danielson 1a)
The students will have to be able to count and perform standard addition and subtraction.

Flexibility and Responsiveness to Students Learning Needs (Danielson 3e)


Gifted- Have students create their own addition problem and solve it, explaining their process.
Special needs- Give the students blocks or other manipulatives to help them work with addition in another
way. Allow them to complete fewer problems on the worksheet.
Instructional Procedures (Danielson 1e)
1) Introduce the objective of the lesson. Today, we are going to be working with adding
and subtracting in different situations. Why is adding and subtracting important,
and when can/do we add and subtract in our lives? [Discuss]
2) Hand each pair of students a white board, a marker, and an eraser/napkin. For a
quick review, Im going to ask 6 questions that involve addition and subtraction. You
and your partner are taking turns writing the answers, but you are solving them
together. Write your answer on your white board, and keep it hidden until I tell the
whole class to hold it up. I will give you enough time to answer, but you also need to
think fast. I will let you know if you found the right answer! After you have the right
answer, go ahead an erase it and wait for the next problem.
3) Use the Elmo to display Christmas Word Problems #1. Model adding and
subtracting, completing the first few problems for the students to see.
4) After modeling, call students up to the board and invite them to solve the remaining
problems as well. Discuss their thought processes out loud.
5) After completing the worksheet together, the students will play Slides and Ladders in
pairs. Model on the Elmo how to properly play.
6) Monitor student learning by making sure they are verbally answering the problem
before their partner has a turn.
7) Have the students complete the Christmas Word Problems #2 individually.
8) Go over the worksheet with the students as a class, discussing any problems they
may have had.
Assessing Prior Today, we are going to be working with adding and subtracting in
