PLANE REGION BETWEEN CURVES

Consider two curves defined by y f x and y g x where in f x g x for all x in
the interval a, b . The area of the region bounded by these curves on this interval can be
obtained by subtracting the area of R1 from the area of R2 as shown in Figure.

Example 11.8
Find the area of the region bounded by y x2 and y 2x .

Solution
The interval of integration is not indicated. However, by sketching the graph and
shading the indicated region, one can see the interval of integration and the
method to obtain it. To get the interval a, b find the points of intersection. Solve
x2 2x . By transposition and factoring, one sees the solution is x 0 or x 2 .
The interval of integration is 0, 2 .

Example 11.10
Find the area of the region bounded by y cos x and y sin x, 0 x 4 .

Solution
To set up the integral properly, we need to see the graphs of sine and cosine

functions in relation to each other on 0, 4 . Figure 11.16 reveals that the cosine
function is greater than the sine function in this interval.
