An Investigation on Seismic Evaluation of

Performance-Based Design Method for Steel Structure Buildings

I
Abstract

The traditional seismic design of buildings structure is processed

by institutionalized laws which only emphasize that the buildings are not
allowed to collapse during serious earthquakes. However, these types of
designs do not include the seismic capacity, damage permission and
usability after earthquakes for the various kinds of earthquake levels.
Indeed, the method cannot really reflect the actual performance of the
buildings. Recently, the performance-based seismic design and
assessment are developed in the world. It focuses on structural behaviors
and checks if its performance conforms the expectation or design
demands during the earthquakes. It provides the manner of flexibility for
structural design. According to the above-mentioned principles, the
ATC-40 seismic code of the United State America is developed.

In the thesis, we investigate the behaviors of the steel structure

buildings. The framework is based on ATC-40, and the software
SAP2000 is adopted to process non-linear static analysis. We can obtain
the results of structural plastic hinge locations, the interstory drifts and
the damage of members at the performance point, and then check if they
satisfy the performance level or not. It is expected that a balanced point is
obtained between building performance and earthquake levels. In
addition, time-history analysis is carried out and it provides a reference
direction for the related code.

Key words ATC-40, non-linear static analysis, pushover method,

time-history analysis, performance-based design.
