Time : 10:30 11:30 am and 4:00 5:00 pm

Date : September 14, 2017
Grade & Section : Grade 12 GA & TVL
Lesson : Ancient Greek models of the Universe
Code : S11/12PS IVa-39-40

I. Objective
1. Discuss significance of Platos problem saving the appearance to the scientific mindset of the
philosophers.
2. Tabulate philosopher name and the proposed model of the Universe and place them in a timeline.
Connect the ancient models of the Universe to their proponents and according to the philosophical
biases and the motion of the sky observed.
3. Specify the additional feature of the new models required to match the new observations of the
annual motion of the sky.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Ancient Greek models of the Universe
B. References: Allegory of the Cave: https//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave; Analogy of
the Divided Line: https;//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analogy_of_the_divided_line; Platos philosophy can
be found here: http://plato.standford.edu/entries/plato_metaphysics/
C. Materials: Diagrams of the Greek models of the Universe: Plato, Exodus, Aristotle and Ptolemy.

III. Procedures
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
A. Review
Class, what is our topic but meeting?
Ancient Greek Physics and Astronomy.
Very good! What are two domains view of the
universe?
Celestial and terrestrial domain.
So how will you differentiate the Celestial and
terrestrial domain?
Celestial domain is perfect hence can only be
made up of the perfect substance they called
ether and can only move in perfect motion
while terrestrial domain, object is imperfect and
that the tendency of thing to attain perfection is
the cause of their motion.
Excellent!

B. Motivation
Class, we will play a guessing game. You will
sing while passing my ballpeen. And if I said
stop, the student who still holding the object
will guess the picture on the blackboard.

Magtataho.
Train.

Giraffe viewed from a window.

Nalulunod na baboy sa putikan.

Naipit na waiter sa elevator.

C. Lesson Proper
a. Activity
Class, on your research you gathered you
will tabulate the following philosophers
name: Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle and
Ptolemy. The philosophers name,
timeline, drawing of models and
explanation should put in a table form on a
short bond paper. (The students will perform their activity.)

b. Analysis
Class, in our activity, how will you explain the
different proposed model you draw and
description? (The students answer the question.)

c. Abstraction
Plato (ca.427-ca.347 BC), the regularity of the
diurnal and annual motions of the sky can be
explained by his basic model: spherical by his
basic model: Spherical crystalline shells
containing the sun, moon, and the five planets
(Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.)
The stars are fixed in the outermost crystalline
sphere that rotates annually.
Class, how will you describe the proposed
model of Plato?
The proposed model of Plato describes the
spherical crystalline shells containing the Sun,
Moon, and the five planets. The stars are fixed
in the outermost crystalline sphere that rotates
annually.
Very good!
Eudoxus of Cnidus (C408-c347 BC), he
followed the previous models of the universe
but added 27 auxiliary spheres that are needed
to produce the appearance that planets
deviate from each others path.

Homo/Geocentric model

Aristotle (384 322 BC) argued that the

motion of the celestial objects can be traced
to a Prime Mover that because of its basic
movement, all other crystalline spheres move
accordingly.

Aristotles Universe

Aristotelian Prime Mover is ignored and

instead other philosophers concentrated on
the production of retrograde motion of all
plants using devices. Among the devices,
one can specifically focus on the combination
of different and the epicycles.
Ptolemys model can be subsequently
improved by adding more epicycles with
smaller radius.
Ptolemys model can be subsequently
improved by adding more epicycles with
smaller radius.
Ptolemy (80-168 AD) developed a model that
predicts the movements of the Sun, Moon,
Planets, and Stars. His model, called the
Ptolemaic system, visualized an Earth
centered universe and assumed that all
astronomical objects move at constant speeds
in circular orbits.

Ptolemaic System
Class, do you see the difference from past
model of Plato up to newest model of Ptolemy?

d. Application
Class, have you observed the stars
position at night?

So what have you observed when we look

on the stars in specific time and specific
location; after one to more hours, what will
happen on the stars location?

Very good!
Another class, have you observed the
sunrise and sunset here in San Jorge?

Based on your observation, is it a proof

that the Earth is round?
Why?

Excellent.

IV. Evaluation
I. Matching type choose the correct letter of the correct answer.
1. Celestial spheres being crystalline and contains a. Thales
the moon, the sun, and the stars. b. Pythagoras
2. Earth is a disk floating on an endless ocean. c. Plato
3. Naked eye observation within one whole day on d. Aristotle
motion of the sky. e. Annual motion of the sky
4. Mathematics as the best way to express truth f. Diurnal motion of the

II. ESSAY (5pts)

1. Differentiate the two domain view of the Universe?
Answer.
Celestial domain is perfect hence can only be made up of the perfect substance they called
either and can only move in perfect motion while terrestrial domain, object are imperfect and
that the tendency of thing to attain perfection is the cause of their motion.

and Ptolemy. Draw their models and describe each in short bond paper.
