Resource 1 Lesson Plan - Visual Art integrated with History- Grade 5/6
(Alejandra, 2011)
Overview
Children working with their hands; great for children that are kinaesthetic learners: creating a replica
of a Greek vase from papier Mache, will really stimulate the mind of the student and make them
think of ancient Greece. History at times can be a little dry, especially for primary aged students, this
is a wonderful way to make History intellectual and stimulating, while incorporating the Arts.
I would introduce the children to Greek History, and have already made a Greek vase of my own to
use as an example and stimulus for the children to see. The children of a grade five and or six level
will work in pairs to create their Greek vase. The result will be the pairs explaining to the rest of the
class why they chose their shape, their colour, and if they would change anything. I am a student
that works well by putting theory into practice. Working with my hands makes abstract thinking
more concrete.
History
Describe perspectives and identify ideas, beliefs and values of people and groups in the past (VCHHC084)
The role that a significant individual or group played in shaping and changing a colony (VCHHK092)

beliefs (VCAVAE029)
Select and apply visual conventions, materials, techniques, technologies and processes specific to different art
forms when making artworks (VCAVAV030)
Create and display art work considering how ideas can be expressed to an audience (VCAVAP031)
Identify and describe how ideas are expressed in artworks by comparing artworks from different contemporary,

Dr Seuss Narration
(Seuss, 1960)
Overview
It is narration script that is of a section of the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish written
by Dr Seuss. It gives the students a chance to act out the text in an expressionist way, for better
comprehension, interaction and enjoyment.
I would use this resource for grade Foundation and one. Using this resource within Drama- the
lesson can also be worked in with music. I thought that this could be a great way for children at a
young age to understand the comprehension of the book, by acting it out with the recourse
provided. Thus, it would link in with the literacy and drama domains. On a previous placement- I
have seen children act out their favourite book. The children respond to it in a positive manner.
English
Identify rhyming words, alliteration patterns, syllables and some sounds (phonemes) in spoken
words(VCELA168)
Replicate the rhythms and sound patterns in stories, rhymes, songs and poems from a range of
cultures(VCELT172)
Drama
Explore ideas for characters and situations through dramatic play (VCADRE017)
Use voice, facial expression, movement and space to imagine and improvise characters and
situations (VCADRD018)
Colour wheel
(Barnes, 2008)
Overview
Victorian Curriculum
Visual Arts
Science
Earths resources are used in a variety of ways (VCSSU047)
Sustainability
Students become aware of whom artists, craftspeople and designers are, and that they express their ideas
through different art forms and visual expressions.
As they make and respond to visual artworks, students identify art forms in different social and cultural contexts.
They make artworks as an artist and view them as an audience.
Having the class work in pairs to create a colour wheel for themselves, I would demonstrate how to
create a rock colour wheel for a referral. The students would then find their materials and create
their own. Colour wheels in Visual arts can be messy, this is a great way to have the same effect,
without paint.
Bird Feeder
Overview
Victorian Curriculum
Visual Art
I would use this as a lesson to attract birds within the area, making the children understand that
nature is rare if we dont look after it correctly. I would get the children to get creative and decorate
the finished bird feeders with leaves, grass and twigs (an added extra to the linked resource).
Children would work in pairs and create several different bird feeders around the school. When I
was in primary school, we did something similar using paper plates, and it was amazing to see the
different birds come into the area.
Overview
This is a lesson from Australian Curriculum Lessons, that I have integrated with Paint Genie, to create
a media art lesson to heighten self-awareness and inner confidence.
Victorian Curriculum
Critical and Creative Thinking
Examine how different kinds of questions can be used to identify and clarify information, ideas and
possibilities (VCCCTQ021)
Investigate thinking processes using visual models and language strategies (VCCCTM029)
Experiment with alternative ideas and actions by setting preconceptions to one side (VCCCTQ022)
Examine learning strategies, including constructing analogies, visualising ideas, summarising and paraphrasing
information and reflect on the application of these strategies in different situations(VCCCTM030)
Health Education
Media Arts
Plan, produce and present media artworks for specific audiences and purposes using responsible media
practice (VCAMAP031)
Explain how the elements of media arts and story principles communicate meaning and viewpoints by comparing
media artworks from different social, cultural and historical contexts (VCAMAR032)
Students working on their own, drawing their interpretation of themselves to create confidence and
fluidity amongst visual art. Digital art then comes into play to create their own media art poster
(from Paint Genie) that they can display around the room and be proud of. Whilst on a placement
last year, I saw pictures created of the students from a digital device displayed around the room,
with their birthday, best friends name and where they live, it was a great booster of confidence,
knowing who they are, and to have a sense of belonging.
