The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Greetings of peace. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The occasion is a
reminder to us that our faith transcends the many other loyalties that we already have to our family, our
work, our friends, our neighborhood and schools, even our country.

Christ the King marks the start of the final week of the liturgical year. The new liturgical year begins at
4pm on Saturday, December 2, with vigil celebration of the First Sunday of Advent.

We live in city where we have giants of the Catholic Intellectual Life: the Jesuits! They have a big
presence in the community with Boston College alums and connections everywhere. One of our friars, Fr.
Ken Himes, OFM, is a professor of Theology at BC and another friar, Fr. Damian Park, OFM, is working
on a PhD in Philosophy at BC. The friars are also working regularly with the Jesuit Fr. Peter Gyves, SJ,
and his Boston organization called A Faith that Does Justice. This great organization is planning to
conduct English as a Second Language classes here at the Shrine in the near future. We are privileged to
be working with the Jesuits on this variety of endeavors for the betterment of the Church and its people.

While we recognize the brilliance of the Jesuits and their good work in the Church in Boston, those of you
who know the Franciscans know that there is something about the person of St. Francis of Assisi and his
followers that is equally appealing, sometimes in a way that thats hard to describe. Maybe one way to
explain it is that Jesuits have brilliant minds, and Franciscans have big hearts.

In the coming liturgical year, as something of a spiritual exercise for ourselves, the friars and the staff of
the Shrine are going to reflect on what it means to have a Franciscan heart. Think about our ministries at
the Shrine: confessions, the Food Center, grieving ministries, LGBTQ, recovery from alcohol, substance
or sexual abuse. These are all are matters of the heart. We all want to be loved by God, be whole, be
authentic, be cared for, and be healed. The healing of the heart that comes from these ministries cant be
done via a recipe. It takes healers with big generous hearts.

We friars are grateful for all of the good people who join us in our ministries in various ways. Thank you!

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM

Year-End Gifts
As the end of the year approaches, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Shrine.
There are a number of ways to make this gift.

1. Cash/check - may be given in person or via the U.S mail. Please note that the gift must be postmarked
by December 31 to be counted for a 2017 tax deduction.

2. Credit card Make a gift on line www.stanthontshrine.org with a credit card. Or, you may call the
Development Office (857-206-7243) and give your credit card over the telephone. Our electronic giving
kiosks in the lobby, and at the information booth are two other options for credit card gifts.

3. IRA Charitable Rollover If you or someone you know is 70 or older and has a traditional Individual
Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution to support the Shrine through
a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and ask that your distribution be a
charitable rollover to the Shrine.

4. Matching Gifts A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to the
Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employers matching gift program.

Thank you for all you do to help us live out the Gospel in Boston. Please continue to pray for all those
whom we serve with love and compassion. If you have questions about making a gift, please contact
Maryanne Rooney-Hegan at (617) 542-6440 ext. 115.

Final Essay
The refugee crisis has fallen out of the news cycle. With so much going on in the world,
what was a front-page headline mere months ago is now rarely in any of our daily news
round-ups. But that doesnt mean it isnt happening.

According to the United Nations, An unprecedented 65.6 million people around the
world have been forced from their homes. Among them are nearly 22.5 million refugees,
over half of whom are under 18.

A U.K.-based Syrian human rights organization reported that 3,055 people were killed in
Syrias war in September alone, the highest monthly total in 2017.

And what all of that means is, the 1.3 million Syrians living in Jordan are not going home.
The war isnt ending and even when it eventually does, there is little left for them to go
home to.

When I lived in Syria in 2009-10, I knew it would be a life-changing experience. I was

young and adventurous and I took advantage of every opportunity to travel around the
country, meet new people, eat amazing food and experience all that Syria had to offer.
When I boarded the plane to come home after a year and a half in Damascus, I felt
comfort knowing that I would definitely be back soon. Four months later, the war started.
This life-changing experience that I had just had suddenly took on a very different sort of
significance.

It is hard to comprehend the amount of death, violence and suffering that has befallen
the Syrian people. It is hard to reconcile the Syria I knew with the Syria it has become. I
feel such a personal connection to the cause and I feel grateful to be able to help out as
much as I have through The Syria Fund. And heres the thing: after sitting with
countless refugee families over the last several years, sharing meals together and
hearing their stories, Ive learned that people are resilient and can overcome so much
hardship but they need help to do it.

I wish I could transport you to Jordan to meet the families we work with. Yes there is
sadness, but there is also a lot of hope. The smiles on the faces of the children are what
keeps me going every day to share our story and bring people together to stand with
refugees.

At The Syria Fund, we provide opportunities for refugee families to get a sense of
normalcy back into their lives. In particular, this means making sure that every child has
the right to an education. In 2018, we are expanding our programs to get 450 more
children back into school - will you join us?

Thank you for letting me share my story over the last few weeks. I encourage you to get
in touch.

ones was imprinted on our psyche
from a young age. Holidays mark the
passage of time in our lives. They are
part of the milestones we share with
each other and they generally represent
time spent with family. They bring
meaning to certain days and we bring
much meaning back to them. But since
holidays are for being with those we
love the most, how on earth can anyone
be expected to cope with them when a
loved one has died? For many people,
this is the hardest part of grieving, when
we miss our loved ones even more than
usual. How can you celebrate
togetherness when there is none?
When you have lost someone special,
your world losses its celebratory
qualities. Holidays only magnify the
loss. The sadness feels sadder and the
