ADJECTIVES

An adjective modifies and describes a noun making your writing and speaking much more specific Adjectives
describe nouns by giving some information about an objects size, shape, age, color, origin or material.

Position of Adjectives

1. The adjective goes before the noun or pronoun:

a difficult exam, an open window, the red one

2. After verb to be

My dog is very aggressive They are lazy

3. After linking verbs or intransitive verbs

This food tastes salty She looks glamorous with that dress

Appearance adjectives: Adorable, beautiful, clean, elegant, Fancy, fat, glamorous, handsome, old-
fashioned, sparkling, ugly, etc

Color adjectives: Yellow, purple, gray, black, White, etc

Condition adjectives: Alive, better, careful, clever, famous, important, inexpensive, powerful, rich, shy,
wrong, etc

Personality adjectives Positive: agreeable, brave, calm, gentle, happy, kind, lively, nice, proud, thankful,
victorious, etc

Personality adjectives Negative: angry, embarrassed, fierce, itchy, jealous, lazy, mysterious, nervous,
panicky, repulsive, scary, worried, etc.

Shape adjectives: crooked, curved, deep, high, low, narrow, round, skinny, square, straight, wide, etc..

Size adjectives: big, colossal, fat, gigantic, great, huge, immense, large, little, miniature, short, small, tall,
tiny, etc

Sound adjectives: loud, melodic, noisy, quiet, thundering, voiceless, whispering, etc

Time adjectives: early, fast, late, long, modern, old, old-fashioned, quick, rapid, short, slow, young, etc

Taste/touch adjectives: bitter, delicious, fresh, greasy, juicy, hot, icy, nutritious, salty, strong, sweet,
tasteless, weak, yummy, etc

Touch adjectives: broken, cold, cool, crooked, curly, dirty, dry, dusty, freezing, hot, warm, wet, etc

Quantity adjectives: abundant, empty, few, full, heavy, light, many, numerous, etc

Adjective form Comparative Superlative

Only one syllable, with more than

Add -er: Add -est:
one vowel or more than one
lighter, neater, faster, lightest, neatest, fastest, tallest.
consonant at the end. Examples:
taller, neater, deeper neatest, deepest
light, neat, fast, tall, neat, deep

Only one syllable, ending in E.

Add -r: Add -st:

Double the
Only one syllable, with one vowel

Two syllables, ending in Y.
