Internet
Q1.
A. Describe in your own words (not more than 250 words plus a diagram) the
principle of lock-in thermography. (5 marks)
B. A silver sheet has a thickness of 4 cm. The temperature on one surface of the
sheet is 180 K and temperature on the other surface is 80 K. What is the
quantity of heat transferred per unit surface area through the thickness of the
sheet? Thermal conductivity of silver: 429 W/(mK) (10 marks)
Q2.
A. Find the wavelength at which the maximum energy can be found for a blackbody
at room temperature (25C):
Givethe wavenumber and frequency for the wavelength of the infrared emission?
(5 marks)

Q3.
A. [IR Detectors]: An IR detector outputs a voltage of 80V .During design tests, the
detector current is measured as 4A. The current is lagging the voltage by 30
degrees. What is the impedance of the IR detector? (10 marks)
B. A contact lens is made of plastic with an index of refraction of 2. The lens has an
outer radius of curvature of 1.25 cm and an inner radius of curvature of 2
cm. What is the focal length of the lens? (15 marks)
Q4.
A. What is the raw file size for an image of 1024 rows and 768 columns, with 16 bits
per pixel? What is the final size of the image after PNG compression (assume it is
20% of the raw file size)? (5 marks)
What filter would you use to remove the impulsive noise in the second row of the
image? What would the second row of the image be after filtering (assume 1 x 3
filter)? (8 marks)
What would be the element (1,1) of the image after convolving the highpass filter
mask of Figure 6.15 in LP6 with the original image? (6 marks)
What would be the element (2,2) of the image after convolving the lowpass filter
mask of Figure 6.20 in LP6 with the original image? (6 marks)
(20 marks)
