1. Title
This states what the research project will deal with. If hypothesis are appropriate,
they should be stated. If the topic is not amenable to statement as a hypothesis,
then the problem or question should be clearly stated.
This essentially mentions the major preceding research. It needs not be exhaustive when a
topic is first is first selected. But you should spend some time in looking at the major
research works on the topic.
This aspect is extremely important because it outlines how the student proposes to approach
the research itself. Is it to be via survey techniques, interviews, re-examining existing data or
how else? This should be explained as precisely as possible, but may still be in a tentative /
rough form. Alternative methodologies should be included if relevant.
You should also prepare a time budget and time schedule. Students and indeed staff, tend to
underestimate the time required for completion of projects. The important concept is realistic
planning and this must depend on realistic time estimates. The best estimates are usually
made by breaking down the activities into small tasks and combining these estimates because
some of the tasks cannot be estimated.
