Week 1

On our first day of our training, we looked for someone whom they call Chief Nats. Chief Nats or
Mr. Renato Dacono is the Chief of the Technical Department of RASA Surveying. He was the one that
supervised us in our whole OJT period in RASA. He gave us brief orientation then toured us inside the
office. He told us that we will be working on the Technical Department in our first week.We stayed in the
Conference Room for the mean time because there were no available desk and computers for us. We
installed Autodesk Civil 3D on our own laptops then started working. Chief Nats instructed Ms. MJ to give
us our first work which is the encoding of descriptions of Control Points and sketching its vicinity. I was
given K0019+(-644) - K0021+142 in Iloilo which consists of 2 GPS, 4 BM and 5 IBM. We used google
earth to help us name the roads and structures near the said control points.

On the 2nd day, we continued what were doing the day before. I continued creating sketches of
the vicinity of the control points and encoding its descriptions. I have finished it on the 2 nd day and
submitted it to Ms. MJ for checking.

On the 3rd day, since I have finished already the first set of control points that was given to me so
I was given a set of new control points. I was given the Control Points along K001 K005 in Roxas City.
What I did was just same process as what I did on the first set of control points that was given to me.

On the 4th day, I finished sketching the vicinity of the control points along K001 K005 and
encoding its descriptions. I submitted my finished work to Ms. MJ after.

Week 2

For our 2nd week we were reassigned to the RAP department for the mean time because the
department needed manpower. On the Tuesday, we plotted on AutoCAD the floor plans of each structure
that will be affected by a road widening in the area of Brgy, Kawayan, Alicia, Zamboang Sibugay. Plotting
and sketching of the floor plans are important in the RAP Project because it is where the cost estimation
of the damage were based.

On May 3, I plotted floor plans of each structure affected in the area of Brgy. Gulayon then on
May 4 and May 5, I plotted the floor plans of each structure that will be affected in the barangays of
Concepcion and Lutiman, respectively.

On May 6, we had our first overtime. We worked half day for the RAP Project. I plotted the floor
plan of the structures that will be affected in the area of Brgy. Dawa-Dawa.

Week 3

On May 8, in our 3rd week of OJT, we are still in the RAP department to help them with their
Project. I plotted the floor plans of the affected structures in Brgy Talaptap and on the next day I plotted
the floor plans of the affected sturctures in Brgy. Sta Maria an I did a 2 hours over time.

On Wednesday, finally, we were given the go signal to join a survey team and do a field work.
The call time was a bit early than office hours. Our Project area was in Sta. Maria Bulacan. The client was
TCGI Engineers and the project was a proposed highway which will begin in the Philippine Arena and the
exit will be in Brgy. Tumana. What we did was a topographic survey of all the structures that might be
affected by the proposed highway and continued the traverse.

On May 11, we went back to Sta. Maria, Bulacan and continued the Topographic Survey and the
traverse. We joined the Survey Team of Sir Labs Ines. We used a Hi-Target Total Station on this day
unlike the day before that we used a Topcon Total Station. I got to set up the traverse stations, T-11 and
T-17.

On May 12, we still continued our field work in Bulacan. We continued the topographic Survey.
Ive got to topo in stations T-1, and T-9A.

On May 13, a Saturday, we had an overtime again. We worked on the RAP Project again. I
sketch the floor plans of the structures that will be affected in the area of Brgy. Mabuhay.

Week 4

On our 4th week, we are still on field work. On May 15, we went back to Sta. Maria, Bulacan to
continue the same project but we joined a different Survey Team. We continued the topographic Survey
in the remaining stations.

On the 16th of May, we joined again the survey team of Sir Labs. They thought us how to do the
staking out of the center line of the proposed highway. While staking out, we are still doing the
topographic survey. Staking out of the center line is for every 20 meters interval

The next day, we continued setting out the center line of the proposed highway and doing a
topographic survey within 50 meters from the center line.

On the May 18, we went to Millenium Gas Turbine Power Plant in Navotas for a drill-hole survey.
We were supposed to join the team inside the compound of the power plant to do the survey but then I
and my co-trainees were not permitted to get inside because of strict security and safety policies. Sir Labs
survey just finished the drill-hole survey in half day so in the afternoon we were back in Bulacan to
continue staking out and the topo of the proposed highway.

On May 19 and 20, we had a new survey project. The new project area was in Mandaluyong City
and the client is DMCI. It was a Relocation Survey project. We did establish a traverse in the area and
then we did a topographic survey.

In our 5th week, we designated in the GIS department. We were given the task of smoothing the
contours of certain areas. I was tasked to smoothen the contours of the shapefile that was given to me
which is the contours of Tagbilaran City, Bohol. For the whole week what we did is to smoothen the
contours of the shapefiles using ArcMap.

On May 26, we had a brief orientation and tutorial on PCI Geomatica about OrthoMosaicing. Ms.
Liezel Gumboc, the head of the GIS department was the one who taught us about ortho mosaics.

On May 27, we had one day training on 3D Laser Scanning using FARO Terrestrial Laser
Scanner. Mr. Richard Lavia was the one who taught us how to operate the said instrument. We
conducted a 3D Laser Scanning inside the RASA Instrument Building. After the scanning, Ms. Mae Ann
showed us how to process the point clouds that was gathered by the FARO Laser Scanner

Week 6

On May 29, we submitted the shapefiles that we edited to Sir Jan because it was already our last
day in the GIS Department. In the afternoon, Mr. Ricahard gave us a brief orientation about drones and
UAV. He then taught us how to use the Drone Simulator. It was so much fun because it was as if we were
just playing computer games with RCs.

The next day we were bound to Mariveles, Bataan for an Unmanned Aerial Survey Project.
Luckily, that project also served as our UAV training. We departed the RASA office at about 7am with Mr.
Richard, Mr. Sonti, Mr. Kennedy and Sir Allan Tiongson. On the first day of the training, the UAS Team
introduced UAV and drones to us. The team did first a reconnaissance/ test flight on the whole project
area as preparation for the actual aerial survey.

On May 31, the UAS team taught us the basic in flying a drone. We used a Mavic Pro drone
which is a small quadcopter and a DJI Inspire Drone which is also a quadcopter but is bigger that the
Mavic Pro. After the basics of flying a drone, Mr. Sonti taught us the basic of Image Processing using the
software Pix4D.

On June 1, we did a static GPS survey for us to establish GCPs that we will be using in the aerial
survey. The base rovers were established in two Namria Control points located in Mariveles. We had a
total of 6 stations observed for an hour. After establishing 6 Ground Control Points, the UAS Team
conducted the actual aerial survey already.

On June 2, we have climbed mountains, go down a cliff, then ride a boat to conduct a
hydrographic survey. We used a single beam echosounder in conducting the hydrographic survey. This
day was the most exhausting day during my whole OJT period. We havent eaten lunch because we
finished the work at about 5pm already. At about 7pm, the team decided to go back to Manila.

CHAPTER 3: ASSESSMENT OF THE OJT PROGRAM

What have I learned from the OJT experience? (Technical)

The main goal of this OJT experience is to learn. To learn new things that would

help us in our future profession and to learn how really it is like to actually work in our

chosen field.

There were a lot of new things that I have learned from my OJT experience. I

have learned how to use Autodesk Civil 3D. I had also understood how topographic

survey and staking out is done. I also learned how to operate the FARO Terrestrial Laser

Scanner and how to process the data gathered by the scanner are processed after. I

also learned the basic of flight planning using pix4D and also how to fly a drone using

the Remote Controls. We were also taught how to set up an echosounder for a

hydrographic surveying. We were also taught how to establish Ground Control Points

using a GPS Static Observation.

People in RASA told us that we were the luckiest OJT because we got the

chance to go around every department and experienced different tasks. Although I and

my co trainees are girls, they did not limit us to office works only. We actually stayed

longer in the field than in the office. We had tried almost all the surveying instruments of

RASA. From the traditional Total Staions, RTK, Drones to the high end instruments such

as the EchoSounder and the FARO 3D Laser Scanner.

I am very thankful to RASA Surveying and to all the personnel who taught us

different things and skills. Those things that theyve taught us would be of great help

once we become GE Professionals so I just hope that those things would retain in my

mind forever.

My experiences with the people around me

Since we did not stay in only one department, we got to interact with different

persons every week. Employees in the office are very professional especially in the

technical department. In our 2nd week where we stayed in the RAP department, the vibe

was much lighter. Weve got to interact with the other employees and also with other

trainees from different schools.

In our 3rd and 4th week, we got to interact with the survey teams. We were so

lucky that we were assigned to the survey team of Sir Labs. Sir Labs and his team, kuya

Arnold, Kuya Raegan and Kuya Mhelgar had been very good to us during our whole

time in the field. They treat us like their younger sisters. We shared foods and they drove

us back to the staff house every day. Aside from teaching us technical stuffs, they had

also taught us how really it is to be a surveyor in the field.

In our 5th week we were assigned to the GIS department, since we only stayed

there for a week and it is in the office we did not have that much of a chance to interact

with others.

In our 6th week, we were back in the field but with a different team and different

kind of work. We joined the UAS Team of RASA. They were the one assigned in Aerial

Surveys. We stayed in Mariveles, Bataan for 4 days. This team trained us how to

operate the drone. On our 3rd day in Bataan, we joined by another survey team who

established the GCPs and the Hydro team for the hydrographic survey. Since the project

area was quite risky coz we need to climb mountains, go down a cliff and ride a boat, Im

so thankful that they kept us safe.

All the people that we have interacted with have been good to us especially

those people in the field.

13
Bicol University
College of Engineering
Geodetic Engineering Department

The most memorable event during my OJT

I consider every day in my OJT period as memorable especially those days that

we were on the field. Although life in the field is much harder because you are under the

sun for almost a day, you got very exhausted and stinky and sweaty and dark skinned,

our experience in the field is still the most fun experience during our OJT. It was really

one of a kind of experience. We share foods with the survey team, we experienced

eating lunch beside the road, under the tree sitting in the rocks and sometimes even

beside an animal poop. During surveys, we never run out of food because the survey

team always pick fruits from the tree that they saw such as mangoes and aratilis.

Theres this one day that I consider as the most memorable event of all

memorable event during our OJT. It was our last day. It was the day that I felt very

exhausted. We had to conduct a hydrographic survey in the sea of Mariveles, Bataan.

We had to climb 2 mountains first then go down a cliff to reach the project area. The

rented small boat arrived at the area at almost 12nn already so we have started the

hydrographic survey at 1 PM. We rode the boat and then started setting up the

echosounder for the hydrographic survey. After 20 mins in the boat, I felt dizzy already

then I throw up. Maybe because we havent eaten our lunch yet, it was so hot, we were

so tired from climbing two mountains and I have motion sickness brought by strong

waves. And so I decided to go back to the shore. I felt so exhausted in our last day but

nonetheless it was so worth it.

What can I recommend for the improvement of the OJT Program?

For me, 240 hours of OJT was not enough. In my experience, the RASA

Surveying has still a lot to offer to us but we need to cut it short because we didnt have

any more hours left. I just hope that the OJT Period will have more hours.

My advice to those who will take their OJT in the near future

My advice to those students who will take their OJT in the near future is to

prepare early. As early as October, prepare your CVs and other requirements already.

Apply to your desired company. Choose the company that you think would be best fit in

what you want to learn. Choose the company that you think would be of great help to

you in your future profession. Do not settle for less. You may sound ambitious if you

would apply to the grandest company in your field, but theres no harm in trying. Dont be

afraid to take risks. If you did not receive a reply in your first application, try again. Try

and try again. If you really want something, there are a lot of ways to achieve it.
