GREETINGS

The 50th year anniversary of the NCCP calls for a celebration. Jubilee year comes only once in
a lifetime for most of us. This is no ordinary feat for an institution who has been to the
turbulence of changing milieus. Yet we have emerged with head up high. The Lord has
walked alongside with us in this journey for building a society where jubilee is an
experienced reality and where everyone, not only a small segment of our community,
experiences life in all its fullness (John 10:10).

As we stand at the threshold of the next 50 years, let us be reminded of the present
debilitating contradictions of our time grinding poverty among urban and rural
communities while those in high places of government lavish in perverted funds from the
people; escalating plunder of our ecology in the midst of large-scale disasters happening
every now and then claiming thousands of lives; militaristic solution and violence towards
ordinary Moro people and indigenous peoples. This is just to name a few. Contradictions in
our country abound in many forms and kinds.

This is just to say that the jubilee we fervently long to celebrate is still a vision awaiting
realization. The task at hand is great. The fields are gold but the workers are few indeed.

Occasions like this allow us to peek, from a distance, the beautiful image of jubilee. May this
celebration of NCCP Sunday turn our eyes and minds to the situations of the marginalized.
Let us imagine jubilee and wok for its concretization.

The NCCP will hold steadfastly to the mandates of the Christian vision of Jubilee. NCCP
Sunday will be a venue to collectively organize our communities and congregations for that
realization of our common vision as one Body of Christ, overcoming obstacles of differences.
Jesus prayer of unity to those who believe is a missional imperative, that all may be one
so that the world may believe. (John 17: 25)

Truly we found hope in our unity. NCCP Sunday is an expression of our unity. Let us indeed
celebrate this concrete unity.

FORWORD

Susulong tayo at

lalago tungo sa buhay na banal at kasiya. Tayo ay magdiwang , sapagkat atin ang NCCP.
Halina at sama-sama tayong magpuri sa ating Panginoong nagtataguyod ng pagkakaisang
ekyumenikal.

Ang inyong kamangagawa sa ubasan ng Maykapal,

LITURGY 1
ORDER OF WORSHIP
Jubilee Celebration of NCCP
17 November 2013
PRELUDE

SILENT MEDITATION
O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and You will not listen? Or cry to You, Violence! and
you will not save? Why do You make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction
and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice
never prevails. The wicked surround the righteoustherefore judgment comes forth
perverted. (Habakkuk 1:2-4)

PROCESSIONAL

LIGHTING OF THE ALTAR CANDLES

CHORAL INTROIT

*CALL TO WORSHIP (Isaiah 58:6-12)

Liturgist The kind of fasting I want is this; remove the chains of oppression and the yolk
of injustice, and let the oppressed go free.

People Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor.
Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your
own relatives.

Liturgist Then My favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be
quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; My presence will protect you
on every side.

People When you pray, I will answer you. When you call Me, I will respond.

Liturgist If you put an end to oppression, to every gesture of contempt, and to every evil
word;

People If you give food to the hungry and satisfy those who are in need, then the
darkness around you will turn to the brightness of noon.

Liturgist And I will always guide you and satisfy you with good things. I will keep you
strong and well. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring of
water that never runs dry.

NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

ALL Your people will build what has long been in ruins, building again on the old
foundations. You will be known as the people who rebuilt the walls, who restored
the ruined houses.

*INVOCATION (2 Kings 5, Galatians 6, Luke 10 In unison

Lift up our hearts, O God, that we may seek the welfare of all. Bathe us in healing waters, that
we may be washed clean. Send us forth with messages of peace, that others may know of
Your gentle love. Lead us into life, that we may be made new in Your Spirit. Amen.

*HYMN OF PRAISE

CALL TO REPENTANCE In unison

Your judgment, Holy One, reveals us for who we truly are. We do not always like what
we see. Judged against the plumb line of Your justice, our ways seem out of balance, our
practices seem wanting. Forgive us, Most High: when we show partiality to the powerful;
when we deny justice to the weak and destitute; when we ignore the cry of the widow and
orphan; when we turn a blind eye to the wicked. We know what it takes to taste the fruit of
eternal life, but we cant seem to make ourselves reach out and taste its sweetness, right
here, right now. We know what it means to be a good neighbor, but we cant seem to bring
ourselves to be one. Work within us, O God, as You worked in the saints of old, that our
works may bear good fruit and our lives may shine the light of Your justice. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION [With soft organ/piano music.]

*ASSURANCE OF GODS PARDON (Psalm 30)

Minister: Gods anger may last a moment, but Gods favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may last
the night, but joy comes in the morning. Rejoice and be glad, for we worship a God
of steadfast love. In the mercy of God, we are forgiven.

People Hallelujah! Thanks be to God.

*PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST (Luke 10)

Minister: Just as Jesus sent his disciples into the world to share words of peace, let us
greet one another with words of peace this day. Turn to your neighbor and share
signs of peace with these words: The peace of Christ be with you.

Singing[While singing Shine, Jesus, Shine, everyone is encouraged to go around and extend
Christs peace towards their neighbor.]

SHINE, JESUS, SHINE

Crystal Lewis

Lord, the light of Your love is shining

In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth You now bring us,
Shine on me, shine on me

Refrain:
Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Fathers glory
Blaze, Spirit blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth Your word
Lord, and let there be light

Lord, I come to Your awesome presence

From the shadows into Your radiance
By the blood I may enter Your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me (Ref.)

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness

So our faces display Your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here may our lives tell Your story.
Shine on me, shine on me (Ref.)

A birdcage; one dove (or pigeon); a pair of white gloves; and a typical NCCP shirt. The dove
will be placed inside the cage. The one who will be opening the cage, and freeing the dove
will be wearing the white pair of gloves and the NCCP shirt.
Procedure:
An NCCP representative will be explaining the relevance of the symbolic offering. The dove will
be released upon the cue of the NCCP representative. The NCCP representative will read a
script. Cues are indicated on the script.

NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

Reader: Lord, through Your constant guidance and leading, NCCP has persevered to be
faithful to Your calling in becoming Your witness here in our nation. We thank You because
for 50 years, all of NCCPs service for the Filipino people were possible because of You.
Without You, O God, NCCPs efforts would have been futile. Because of Your faithfulness,
accept this symbol, this gesture, that we, the NCCP, will be offering to You.

This symbolic gesture, O Lord, entails the following: a dove symbolizing the Filipino people;
the cage, entrapping the dove symbolizes the injustices and the evils that plague all
Filipinos, such as graft and corruption, adequate learning and education unreachable to the
poor, employment benefits withheld from workers, health aid unavailable to those who are
sick, housing projects that are inaccessible to the homeless, misuse of indigenous peoples
lands, the abuse of women and children, unavailability of decent work, and many more. The
Filipino people have been suffering for many years now because of these social injustices
and evils.

Now, in the midst of all these hardships, NCCP, through Gods leading, has responded to the
nations anguish. NCCP has constantly been desiring Gods rule to materialize here in this
country. NCCP reaches out to those who are in need, those who are oppressed, those who
are seeking justice, becoming to them the Lords comfort and a prophetic voice in the midst
of all these torment. NCCP seeks for a Filipino nation that is free from all of these injustices
and evils. In the quest to fulfill this, NCCP strives to continue this God-given work.

[A volunteer, wearing the pair of white gloves and NCCP shirt, will carefully open the cage
and gently handle the dove out of the cage. The dove will NOT yet be released at this point.]

Reader: As our offering to You, O Lord, accept this symbolic gesture

that NCCP will faithfully and continuously do this God-given task to the next years to come.
Following Christs footsteps, as enumerated in Luke 4:18-19, where it says The Spirit of the
Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to
proclaim the year of the Lords favor, NCCP will be faithful in doing these tasks as well,
freeing Your people from the misery that bounds every Filipino people.

[The NCCP representative will now release the dove from his hands.]

Reader: It will not be easy, but NCCP, by Gods grace, is willing to bear that cross, until the
day Your kingdom has materialized completely over all Your creation, O Lord.

We hear Gods Word with more than the hope that there is treasure laid up for us in

our mind; life that begins when we love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Love well and

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION OF ELEMENTS In unison

Our loving God: we offer these elements for the common meal we are about to partake of.
They represent the fruit of the land You have given us to share together; they remind us of
our common need to have our lives nourished by Your grace. They also symbolize the
sanctity of common things which You can transform into a sacrament, a visible sign of Your
presence. Sanctify these elements, O God, for our use now as we remember Your life and
suffering for us through our Lord Jesus Christ, who through His ministry, death, and
resurrection, has given us new life. In His name we pray. Amen.

THE COMMUNION PRAYER

Minister We come to Your table, Lord, not because we are strong, but because we are weak.
People We come to Your table not because we have claim on Your love, but because in our
frailty and sin, we stand in constant need of Your mercy and love.
ALL We come to Your table not to testify that we are righteous, but to offer our love to
You and our desire to be faithful to You. Grant that in this sacrament we may have
our faith renewed and our commitment to serve You deepened. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

*APOSTLES CREED In unison

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ,
His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the
virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He
descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*CALL TO OFFERING In unison

works of these gifts in the world, that Your love and salvation may shine through them for all

People: We are honored to remember the Original Member Churches and their Leaders,
who in their times had crossed and bridged boundaries of churches various faith traditions,
practices and experiences. With strong hope and resolve, they believed that their
differences would not hinder the unity of churches they envisioned in the future; that their
strong will and accord would make others to follow; that their good intention to live out the
prayer of our Lord, Jesus Christ, That they may all be one (John 17:21) would become a
legacy for the coming generations.

All: We bless their names and the legacy they entrusted to us. We are very grateful to our
God of history, who by his guidance and grace allowed NCCP to happen, to be a reality, and to
be instrument of Gods promise abundance of life; that by its continuing ministry to the poor,
the needy, and the victims of injustices; that by its advocacy for justice and peace and
integrity of creation, NCCP is able to live out its leaders legacy.

the enemies of life bestowed. O God of our forebears, be always the torch of light unto our
lives.

Hymn:
Here I Am Lord
Daniel ODonnell in his Album: Songs of Faith

(Please, change the singular nouns/pronouns in the chorus into plural nouns/pronouns)

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry

All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save.
I, who made the stars and night,
I will make the darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them, Whom shall I send?

Here we are, Lord. Is it we, Lord?

We have heard you calling in the night
We will go Lord, as you lead us
We will hold your people in our hearts.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain

I have wept for love of them, They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Fill their hearts with love alone
I will speak my word to them, Whom shall I send?

Here we are, Lord. Is it we, Lord?

We have heard you calling in the night
We will go Lord, as you lead us
We will hold your people in our hearts.
(slowly, sing the last line...)
We will hold your people in our hearts.

All: Let us become steadfast with our faith and let us continue to do good things as we
strongly desire to follow your examples, O Lord.

Prayer of Commitment (All stand)

Leader: O Triune God, who incarnate into the world and become one among us, through
your continuing presence and guidance, you lead NCCP from its humble beginning to what
it is today. Empower all the Member Churches the gift of discernment as they strive to
continue walking by your side: loving and caring your people, making and building peace
in our unjust society, and setting example for unity amidst diversity.

May all our leaders will lead us make right, just, and responsible decisions as NCCP
responds to the signs of the times; that our actions be relevant in all the ways and
expressions to live out your truth and will. Strengthen our resolve that our commitment to

love and serve you by loving and serving the people will remain complete through the years
of NCCPs existence.

People: O Triune God, strengthen our resolve. We thank you today and all the days in our
lives. Thank you for being instruments of your will, thank you for the joy in participating

creation and peace based on justice reside.

All: Guide all our actions for the glory of your Name and for the good and welfare of all
people. AMEN.

Benediction
(Clergy: bishop, pastor, priest, minister or anybody ordained will give the final blessing. If no
ordained present, the leader will read all.)

Leader: Let us continue to listen the voices and the cries of our people; their relentless
shouts for justice; their unending songs for fredom; and their persistent prayers for peace.
For it is responding concretely to their needs without ceasing that we will truly experience
Gods blessing, wisdom, discernment and empowerment of One God the Creator,
Liberator and Sanctifier.

Glory to God whose divine power inspiring, moving and working in us can do exceedingly
great more than we can ask or magine. Glory to God from generation to generation calling,
trusting and leading us to follow the way and to live out Gods truth and will as we continue
holding high the tapestry of justice and peace toward life abundance.

And the blessing Shalom of the Triune God be with us all and dwell in us, now and forever
more. AMEN!

Chairperson offered the lot in UP Diliman Campus for IFI Minisrty (now is where Church
of the Risen Lord stands) in honor and legacy of the Ecumenical Movement in the
Philippines spearheaded by the NCCP. The place where CRL now was where the IFI UP-
Parish of the Holy Cross (now located in Escaler Street near Katipuna Avenue )
congregated, worshipped and had the Student Chaplaincy Ministry. To affirm this, the
name of the street where CRL located is Aglipay Street (You can verify, thanks.)

Get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a
witness of what you have seen of me and what I will show you. I will rescue you from your
own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn
them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive
forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me. (Acts 26:16-18)

OPENING SENTENCES

Liturgist: To the Lord, our God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and
everything in it. Yet the Lord set His affection on our forefathers and loved them, and He
chose us, their descendants above all nations, as it is today.

People: And now, what does the Lord our God ask of us but to fear Him, to walk in all His
ways, to love Him, to serve Him with all our souls, and to observe His commands and
decrees?

Liturgist: Fear the Lord and serve Him. Hold fast to Him. He is our paise. He is our God.
People: Let us love the Lord our God and keep His requirements, His decrees, His laws
and His commands always.

INTRODUCTION:
(Instrumental music may be played while the people sit in silence for a few minutes)
NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

Leader: We are gathered here today in the presence of God in order to offer our united
praise and thanksgiving for the Jubilee Year (50 th) of the National Council of Churches in the
Philippines popularly known as NCCP.

The NCCP is the largest aggrupation of mainline non-Roman and Protestant Churches in the
Philippines. As a Council of Page 24 of 34
Churches, its mission revolves
around the protection and defense of human rights, promotion of justice
and the pursuit of genuine and lasting peace in world of unpeace. It journeys with the lost,
the least and the last in their daily struggle for a better life. As enshrined in its vision, the
Council shall continue working and striving for a more abundant and more humane life.

This is indeed an opportune time not only to remember and reminisce but more importantly
to re-live the spirit of oikoumene as the reason for being of this noble Council since its
advent five decades ago.

Let us now sing a composition of Mr. Joy Nilo for this special occasion.

REFLECTION: On Jubilee and Abundant Life

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Leader: We continue to affirm our Page 25 of 34 conciliar faith by saying together

All: We believe in our God, who created a changing world.

Where there are no unchanging laws, no natural order of violence and hatred, experts and
uninformed rulers and ruled. We believe in God who wills in the contradictions of living, and
call us to change situations through our work, our ministry, through our spiritualities.

We recognize in the comparison how crippled is our imagination, how wasted our efforts,
because we do not live as he lived.

We believe in Jesus Christ, who worked for change and died for it. We see him buried in our
world, in our churches, because we have betrayed his revolution out of disobedience or fear.

We believe in Jesus Christ, rising in our lives, freeing us from prejudice and presumption,
from fear and hatred, to carry on His works, for revolution towards the coming of his
kingdom.

We believe in the Spirit, who gives nourishment and life towards the realization of Gods
Kingdom.

We seek to live with dignity, within the justness of peace in our responsibility to realize it
against the forces that destroy it, that the image of God within us be realized.

We believe in the just peace, as part of the continuing struggle in our vision for a new social
order.

Leader: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us greet each other with a big, big smile.

(Here peace is exchanged with handshake)

OFFERTORY

Leader: Give the Lord the honor due his Name, bring offerings and come into his courts.
(Here special offering envelopes are collected and brought to the altar).
NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

PRAYER OVER GIFTS:

asking you to accept us and these our gifts from your bounty for the
mission and ministry of NCCP.

People: All that is in heaven and earth are yours, and of your own do we give you. Amen.

OUR FATHER
Leader: The Lord is here.

People: His Spirit is with us.

Leader: As our Savior has taught us, with confidence we pray in our native tongue,

Together: Our Father in heaven, holy be your name Your Kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver your from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the
power and the glory forever. Amen.

SUFFRAGES
Leader: Show us your mercy, O Lord.

People: And grant us your salvation.

Leader: Clothe your ministers with righteousness.

People: Let you people sing with joy.

Leader: Give peace, O Lord in all the world.

People: For only in you can we live in safety.

Leader: Lord, keep this nation under your care.

People: And guide us in justice and truth.

Leader: Let your way be known upon earth.

NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

People: Your saving help among all nations.

Leader: Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten.

People: Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

Leader: Create in us with clean hearts O God.

People: And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Leader: Let us pray,

Our Parent-God, you blessed Son came not to be served but to serve, not to be ministered
unto but to minister. We beseech you to bless the leaders, members, associate members and
staffs of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines, that, following His steps, give
themselves to the service of your people. Endue them with wisdom, patience and courage to
strengthen the weak and raise those who fall; that, being inspired by your love, they may
minister in your Name to the suffering, the friendless and the needy. Grant us grace
fearlessly to contend against evil, and to make no peace with oppression; and that we may
reverently use our freedom, in the furtherance of justice among all peoples and nations;
through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Clergy present: People of God, go now, recognizing that the equal and inalienable rights of
all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the
world. Let each one of us commit ourselves to the defense of human dignity in the name of
God + who creates . . .Jesus +who liberates . . .and the Holy Spirit + who unites.
People: Amen! Amen! Amen!

SERMON GUIDE Page 28 of 34

FULLNESS OF LIFE FOR ALL PEOPLE

John 10:10; Matthew 6:9-12

Introduction

Our passage tells us that Jesus came that we may have life, and have it to the full. What is
fullness of life? Fullness of life is envisioned by NCCP as a just, egalitarian, self-reliant,
and sustainable society. These are the indicators of our general well being, and these
encompass not merely the economic, but also social, political, and religious dimensions.
Fullness of life is about experiencing the God of holiness, justice and love who liberates us
from all forms of oppression; seeing every person as an image of God; being able to decide
and secure our future; and finding our human dignity which is rooted in the humanity of
Jesus.

Today, let us re-imagine our vision of the Jubilee by looking at Jesus agenda of fullness of life
as expressed in The Lord's Prayer, which is essentially a liturgical form of the Jubilee. The
Lords Prayer "describes a community that recognizes God as its source of life, and a
community that lives all of life in relation to God."

I. Every Person a Child of God: An Egalitarian Society

"Our Father in heaven" Matthew 6:9

A. Context/Background. In biblical times, children were not symbols of purity and

innocence, but of marginality and exclusion from the male/adult world.
B. To acknowledge God as "Our Father" means that we are a community of "children," as
brothers and sisters who are on equal footing before God and one another.
C. Our theology of equality is rooted in the biblical teaching of imago Dei, that each
person is an image of God (Genesis 1:27; cf. Galatians 3:28).
D. Illustration: Filipino creation myth, man and woman as equals, each coming from one
half of the same bamboo.
E. Influence of western patriarchal culture on our societypatriarchy and kyriarchy.

Application. As a community of God's children, to call God "Our Father" means we should
banish any form of gender inequality. Violence against another person is violence against
God, and exclusion of women is exclusion of God.
NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

II. Earth as in Heaven: A Just Society

"Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:10

A. A just society acknowledges Page 29 of 34 the reign of God, which is

described in the prayer as your name, your kingdom, and
your will. Then it anticipates Gods provisions of our daily bread, forgiveness of
our debts, and freedom from our temptations.
B. The first three petitions assert that earth does not have autonomy independent of
God's reign. The last three petitions express the need for solidarity in pursuing a just
society.
C. Context/Background. The theology of imperial Rome, in Jesus' time, presented the
emperor "as chosen by the gods to rule. He is regarded as the agent of their
sovereignty, presence, and will on earth, and of their blessing that ensures society's
well-being."
D. The Jubilee prayer resists this idolatry by affirming the Father's sovereignty, presence,
will, and blessing upon humanity.
E. Illustration. To pray that God's will be done "on earth as in heaven" is to experience
the "new heaven and new earth" (Isaiah 65:21, 22, 25).

Application. We all have the possibility of being instruments of Gods justice. Jubilee is
fullness of life for allfor women and men; for pastors and lay people; for public witness and
quiet witness; for mature members and young people. Jubilee should run through in our
lives. All of us are endowed with the grace of God which sets the oppressed free; which
makes all peoples equal.

III. Enough is Enough for All: A Sustainable Life

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11

A. Present Context. Advocacies: Enough is enough; live simply so that others may
simply live; more with less.
B. Biblical context. This jubilee prayer "recognizes that basic resources are not justly
distributed, that many lack adequate access to what they need to sustain life, and that
some procure excessive bread by unjust means which deprive others."
C. "Give us this day our daily bread" urges us to act in solidarity in order that the rich
will stop hoarding wealth, and to resist the huge gap between the rich and the poor.
D. Illustration. "Being is not Having." Jesus resisting greed and materialism, in Luke
12:15, he said that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. He
illustrated this new way of being in the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:16-21).
NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

Application. In our globalized world, there is no fullness of life when life itself is reduced as
the ultimate commodity of free trade and deregulated commerce, where the only
accountability is money. Globalization has united all people towards a common quest for
material gratification, like the rich fool. There is no fullness of life when our life relationships
are no longer defined in relation to God, but by the market. There is no fullness of life when
we substitute our yearning for God for an insatiable desire for some new consumer good,
like new car, new TV, and new electronic gadgets. It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, The
earth provides enough to satisfy Page 30 of 34 every mans need, but not any
ones greed.

IV. Forgive us our Debts: A Self-reliant Society

"Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."

Matthew 6:12

A. Context/Background. In the Old Testament, cancellation of debt was a sabbatical-year

regulation where debts are remitted every seven years (Deuteronomy 15:11). This
was to ensure that the poor have access to land and resources.
B. Asking God to forgive our debts means that we must also release our debtors, by
restoring a just relation.
C. The biblical understanding of debt refers to three dimensional whole: a socio-
economic order of injustice; a trespassing; and a sin against God the creator.
D. By including "forgiveness and debts" in the Lord's Prayer, we are reminded that
worship and doing justice are interconnected.
E. Illustration. "Ecological debt." Over the past decades, ecological destruction has been
ever-increasing due to destructive regime and greed of globalization and global
empire building.

Application. There is no fullness of life when industrial countries continue to plunder

resources of poor countries; when wealthy nations consume greater share of global
resources, while developing countries consume less despite greater number of population.
Asking for "forgiveness of debt" means payment of debt accumulated by the wealthy
towards our poorer regions on account of environmental damage.

Conclusion

Our vision of fullness of life is a shared struggle and a shared vision. There is a story
mentioned by Nelson Mandela: A traveller through a country would stop at a village and he
didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food and attend
him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu, but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean
that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so
in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve?
NCCP SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2013

As we end our reflection, let us ponder on a poem entitled Cry justice which captures our
Jubilee vision.

When I can hold you no more

In the comfort of my Page 31 of 34 body
For there is surely a limit
To my carrying capacity.

When I am torn and plundered

From over-exploitation and greed
By a few who are unsatiated
In anger I tremble, the ground I shake.

When only the wretched and I share

The brunt of suffering and despair
And our heavy cries for justice muffled
As if we were by the heavens ignored.

When in unbridled desire and arrogance

Theres a claim I can be subdued
Dont be mistaken, never think
That you know me, no, you dont.

Cry justice for me, your only home

Call me Gaia*, the organic, living one
through sacred words YHWH God created
Pronounced good, a blessing and blessed.

Cry justice out loud, hear me

From my many breasts youll feed
A generous mother, I will be
Til all you shall return to my belly.

*Greek version of Mother Nature or Earth.
