Thanks Crasher, I guess the pcv pipe is on the left hand side looking at the car and is the large pipe, that pushes onto the rear left hand side.
this pipe is clear, and no oil in air filter, I did service recently, and replaced the air filter which was very black, but it was just dirt, like it hadnt
being changed for 5 years (which funnily enough is how long the previous owner had had the car)
taking car into indie on friday.
if its an electric egr, how do they test it?

The EGR valve is tested using a diagnostic computer in Basic Settings 04 Main Group 075 observing Display Zone 4 whilst applying WOT briefly and
then letting the engine run down where the text in Display Zone 4 will change from Test off to Test on and then either Sys OK or system not OK.

I took car into an indie, vw/audi, they charged me 30 and said its the egr valve. I cant get the engine management light to go off after I change
the egr valve, so have to take it back and let them do what you said crasher.
but what to do? get a new one or a 2nd hand one?

the garage gave me a number for a 2nd hand stockist, but whats the point of putting a 2nd hand one in when that could knacker up again in a
month?
do you know best cheapest place to get one from?

and on the car its part # 036131503 M

but they are telling me to get 036131503 T

036 131 503 M is correct for a 2001 Golf 4 with an AXP engine.

036 131 503 T is for later cats with BAC and BCB engines.

Buy a new EGR valve from someone like GSF.

Re: Egr Valve - Low Flow, 1.4 Petrol 30-10-2009, 07:27 PM

I rang VW Redditch, they have 1 (T) and the gaskets in stock. 150 for egr, and 80 + vat for fitting. I got them down to 200 all in, as I said it
takes 15mins to swap egr valve and 15 mins to do the computer bit and test drive. fair play, they got me in after 1 hour, they spent 1 hour on
car and gave it a good look over for free. nowt else wrong apart from tyres. the parts and labour come with 2 years guarantee, so if it buggers
up again at least I have made init :-)
Thanks for all your help Crasher, appriciate it.
Oh and the car drives supurb, it has a slight hesitation at 1800 - 2000 revs in 3rd gear only, but pulls great in 5th at 40mph.
and im still saving the eviroment a little. its geting 100 miles to a 10 so far.
Im hoping for an improvement now new egr valve in.
