1. (a)With a suitable diagram, explain how oscillations are built up in a magnetron?


What is meant by - mode of oscillations. 10M
(b) A pulsed cylindrical magnetron is operated with the following parameters:
Anode voltage = 25kV, beam current = 25A, magnetic density = 034wb/m2 , radius
of cathode cylinder = 5cm, radius of anode cylinder = 10cm. Calculate
(i)Angular frequency (ii) cut off voltage (iii) the cut off magnetic flux density 6M
What is strapping? Explain the need for strapping. 4M

2. (a) Draw a diagram to describe the construction of a Rotary type precision variable
phase shifter. Derive the expression of the phase shift as a function of rotation angle

(c) Bring out the difference between E and H-plane Tees 2M

3. (a) Define negative differential resistivity. Explain the J-E characteristics of a Gunn

5. (a) With relevant diagrams , express the equations of characteristic impedance for co-
planar and shielded strip lines. 6M
(b) A coplanar strip line carries an average power of 250mW and a peak current of
100mA. Determine the characteristic impedance of the coplanar strip line. 2M
A shielded strip line has the following parameters:
Dielectric constant of the insulator (polystyrene) r = 2.56
Strip width: w = 25 mils
Strip thickness: t = 14 mils
Shield depth: d = 70 mils
Calculate: (i) The K factor
(ii) The fringe capacitance
(iii) The characteristic impedance of the line. 4M
(d) With relevant equations, derive Q of microstrip lines. 8M

6. (a) With a neat block diagram, explain the operation of a RADAR 8M


(b) Derive RADAR range equation in terms of noise figure of the receiver. 8M
A radar transmitter has a peak pulse power of 400KW, a PRF of 1500 PPS and a
pulse width of 0.8 sec. Calculate (i) the maximum unambiguous range (ii) duty cycle
(iii) the average transmitted power (iv) suitable bandwidth 4M
OR
7. (a) With a neat block diagram, explain the operation of a pulse Doppler radar. 10M
(b)With a block schematic, explain the working of a moving target detector 10M
