configurations designed to prevent ingress of external
media and back pumping.
Pneumatic seals
A complete range of Zurcon piston seals, rod seals,
scraper and cushioning seals provide the high mechanical
strength and excellent resistance against wearing and
tearing required in pneumatic applications. Offering
unrivalled service life in both dry and lubricated air,
Busak+Shamban offers sealing systems that meet
requirements for low friction in dry running, low-
pressure situations in static and dynamic conditions,
providing the ideal option for effective sealing in valves
and other pneumatic components.
Custom manufactured solutions
Alongside this broad range of products, Busak+Shamban
also provides specialized custom manufactured solutions
utilizing our wide range of innovative elastomeric and
PTFE compounds. These include specially designed
diaphragms, gaskets, Ground Balls and Ventseal, a
rubber venting valve primarily used as a ventilation unit

perfluoroelastomer to metal, allows us to provide

Customized aerospace sealing

customized seal designs that includes airframe seals for

Reliable under pressure
Millau Viaduct deck lifting
system
The planned route of the E11, a new
six-lane highway from Paris to Barcelona,
took it across the Millau Viaduct in
Southern France. Enerpac, specialists in
construction hydraulics, were tasked with
development of a hydraulic system to push
90 foot (27.35 meter) wide road decks
onto the tallest concrete bridge piers ever
constructed. The system they designed
contained 388 cylinders in hydraulic
launching devices, which lifted then
pushed decks into place.
Busak+Shamban was approached to
develop a sealing solution for the cylinders
that would provide optimum sealing
function, resistance to ingress from abrasive
materials and be capable of withstanding
pressures up to 10,100 psi (700 bar).
The hydraulic sealing
challenge met
To meet the extreme demands of this
application, Busak+Shamban development
engineers designed complex sealing
configurations specifically matched to
each individual cylinders operational
requirements. These combined between
four and 14 sealing elements, in bore
diameters ranging from 5-34 inches
(145mm) to 12 inches (305mm) and rod
diameters of 2-34 inches (70mm) to
8-12 inches (220mm).
They utilized a variety of different seals
and bearings, including Turcon Glydring,
Stepseal and Excluder, Zurcon Rimseal
and Luytex Slydring. Busak+Shamban
proprietary materials and product designs
proved ideal for sealing this hydraulic
system, making a major contribution to
the construction of the tallest bridge in
the world.
Demanding Sealing requirements
Raising the road decks onto the tallest bridge piers ever
constructed, put massive demands on the sealing systems
of the 388 hydraulic cylinders used to lift them, including
withstanding operating pressures up to 10,100 psi
(700 bar) and resistance to abrasive media.
Advanced solution
The unique Busak+Shamban materials and products
specified in the cylinder sealing configurations maximized
hydraulic system performance. The proprietary Turcon
high performance, thermoplastic material, that was
selected for the majority of the seals within the system,
proved ideal in this application.
Vital link
Successfully completed to schedule, the bridge across
the Millau viaduct was inaugurated in 2004.
At 1,100 feet (336.4 meters), it is the highest bridge in
the world and a critical link in the busy A11 autoroute
from Paris to Barcelona.
Proven Safety
Airbus A380
Despite Airbus A380 designers attaching
great importance to weight reduction,
the aircraft is the heaviest of its type with
a take-off weight that can exceed 500
tonnes. To lift this load but avoid increasing
weight and size of the hydraulic actuators,
Airbus increased hydraulic pressure from
3,000 PSI to 5,000 PSI and to generate
the thrust of 279,900 pounds (1244 kN)
required, four high-powered propulsion
units were employed.
A major factor in realizing ambitious
performance targets for safety and
operating costs was identification of
system suppliers who could employ new
technology to enable them to meet
their objectives. As a leading seal
supplier to aerospace, Busak+Shamban
was approached for a range of sealing
solutions.
The challenge for economy
and safety met
Busak+Shamban was able to employ all our
experience of sealing for Common Rail
and High-Pressure Unit Injector systems,
designed to operate in pressures up to
29,000 PSI, to offer robust solutions for the
A380s 5,000 PSI hydraulic pressure.
The seals for the turbine blades of the
propulsion units need to operate at
extreme temperatures and seal lubricant
into the engine while excluding external
media.
Our innovative design for this application
provides optimum sealing with a composite
fiber-reinforced construction material.
In addition, in airfoil surface areas, unique
Busak+Shamban silicone profile seals play
a part in airflow optimization of the flaps
and fairings. These seals offer improved
aerodynamics and thus, noise reduction
and decreased fuel consumption.
Target objectives met
Advanced design of the new Airbus A380, with its
carrying options of 555 or 850 passengers, has led to
operating costs 16 percent lower than other wide-bodied
aircraft. Busak+Shamban made a major contribution in
providing effective sealing solutions.

Busak+Shamban was able to provide optimum sealing
for the A380, utilizing our unique range of materials
and products, to offer systems capable of withstanding
high pressure, extreme temperatures, a variety of media
and lubricants while improving aerodynamics and fuel
consumption.

programs including Eurofighter EF2000, NH 90 helicopter,
Tiger, Airbus, Boing, Bombardier and Embraer and are

Customized Performance
Automotive twinseal
Automotive engineers are continuously
developing components to fit into a more
compact design envelope. An original
equipment manufacturer demanded from
their shock absorber supplier increased
ride comfort, however their vehicle design
would not allow an increase in component
size. As a consequence, the pressure within
the shock absorbers had to be raised and
this higher pressure lifted the load on their
seals, the resulting friction increased in
direct proportion. Instead of improving
the comfort of the ride, the greater
friction had a negative effect, it acting
as a damping element. Busak+Shamban
was enlisted to provide a solution to this
dilemma.
The design challenge met
High pressure with low friction was
the design challenge for Busak+Shamban
engineers. Continuing with the same sealing
configuration could not accomplish the
results required, so a fundamentally different
seal design was proposed. Using the latest
in computer modelling techniques, the best
option appeared to be to replace the existing
Turcon Stepseal with a Turcon Twinseal.
It was believed that this would improve the
pressure balance, optimizing rod operation
and giving the friction reduction needed.
This proved to be the case. The new
sealing system was tested and successfully
qualified by simulating road and load
conditions on state-of-the-art test benches at
Busak+Shamban laboratories for durations
equivalent to more than 124,000 miles
(200,000 kilometers).
Advanced shock absorption
The new shock absorber system allows load dependent
regulation of the vehicles chassis by supporting the
bodywork according to load conditions. Suspension
struts ensure the body rests on the same level, balancing
softness for comfort and firmness for safety.
Innovative seal design
With proprietary materials and innovative product
designs, Busak+Shamban had a unique ability to
recommend the optimum sealing solution for this
challenging application. Extensive in-house testing
facilities allowed us to effectively prove that it would
meet the operating parameters required.

actively providing long term, effective sealing on most
systems for both cars and commercial vehicles, developed
in conjunction with vehicle manufacturers and their

ways to reduce waste and eliminate any
areas of their process that may have a
detrimental effect. Considerable investment
has been made in the development of
effective water-based alternatives to
solvent-based coatings and also in providing
solutions for sealing issues arising from use
of environmentally friendly media in our
customers processing systems, supporting
them in meeting standards too.
Next generation sealing
At Busak+Shamban, we do not rely on our
success in the past to build our business in
the future. Though our previous experience
is invaluable, we continue to identify the
changing needs of our customers to match
innovative materials, products and services
to their emerging requirements.
Recent advances include interactive and
on-line software that support our customers
design process while new materials are
engineered to meet operating conditions
previously believed impossible. Development
is ongoing with Smart Seals, intelligent
seals that provide users with information
on working conditions and the status of
the seal.
