1 PHD AT POLITECNICO
1.1 The doctoral research
programme in Italy
The doctoral research programme is a three-
years course meant to provide students with
a high level of scientific and technical culture
and the methodological instruments that are
required to become a researcher and to
deal with issues and problems in the desired
scientific field.
The doctorate is the highest level of
education, during which doctoral students
define and develop a research programme,
both through high level education
programmes and personal knowledge
improvement.
As to the career prospects of a research
doctor, there are mainly three openings:
academic: the doctoral course is the first
step for the young academics who wish to
take up a University career;
active researcher in industrial research
bodies: in this case, the doctoral experience
will help introducing an innovative research
approach, through the skills and
competencies that research doctors acquire
during the doctoral programme;
manager in high technology industries:
the main contribution that a research doctor
can bring in that field is the sensitivity for
researchers role into the industrial field and
the ability in managing innovation that has
been acquired during the doctoral process.
1.2 Doctoral School
In the year 1999, Politecnico di Torino
established a specific structure devoted to
doctoral studies, managing all the doctoral
courses provided by the Institution: the
Doctoral School. The cultural and professional
contents of the Doctoral courses are
presented on the web-page (http://
dottorato.polito.it).
PhD Programme is grouped into four main
areas:

The main aim of the Doctoral School is to
manage the complex system of the new
University educational programme and to
establish a link between the Academia and
the other components of society, such as the
production and enterprise field, public and
private bodies, culture and work forces that
are attracted by the crucial role of high level
education and research.
The aim of the Doctoral School is then to
manage and harmonize the different
doctoral courses, their educational and
cultural activities, as well as to control the
quality of doctoral courses and to promote
the strategic choices regarding the doctoral
courses. As a matter of fact, doctoral
students play a relevant role for scientific
research.

As to the educational activities, the School
offers about 200 third level (highest
educational level) courses, also providing a
databank that can be looked up online, thus
allowing students to choose between a wide
range of courses for their educational plan
(see chapter 4). In addition to that, several
excellence courses given by scientists of
international reputation are organized each
year.
Each student works under the supervision of a
professor (tutor or supervisor), cooperating
with him/her, thereby learning research
methods and techniques. This means that
each and every student is assisted by a
faculty member, who allows him / her to
learn how research is carried out in that field,
but also to cope with the most interesting
themes and to get in touch with the
international scientific community of his/her
specific field of study as well.

2) Non-recipients of scholarship
All doctoral candidates who are not granted
a scholarship are liable to pay the annual
registration fee.
The total amount of fees to be paid for the
year 2016/2017 is 2.601,53 to be paid as
follows:
If it is the first year of enrolment, a first
instalment of 200,00 Euro has to be paid at the
time of registration.
If it is the second or third year of enrolment,
the first instalment of 1.300,00 has to be paid
by 30/11/2016.
The second instalment of 2.401,53 Euro, or
1301,53 for 2nd and 3rd year PhD candidate)
must be paid by 31/03/2017 (if the amount to
be paid is reduced because of the personal
economic situation of the candidate, the
second instalment can be reduced, too).
The following extra-Politecnico costs are part
of the fee:

offered to the students;

3) Recipients of an Edisu scholarship
Edisu offers scholarships every year.
All doctoral candidates who receive a
scholarship by Edisu are automatically
exonerated from paying the university fees.
However, they have to pay the annual
amount for the premiums for accident
insurance, the Siae-contribution and the
revenue stamp for a total amount of 20,86

Euro. (see art. 43 of the Fee Guide 2016/2017).

4) Students whom family unit generates
income abroad

If, for any reason, PhD candidates are not able
to complete the online procedure, they need
to send within the deadlines, an email to

and they will be contacted back.
2.4 Enrolment to the following years
At the end of each academic year, the PhD
candidate is required to submit to the
Academic Board a detailed report on the
educational and research activities performed
during the year. Based on the evaluation of
the points acquired, the Academic Board
decides for his/her admission to the following
year or the final examination. A negative
evaluation shall entail the loss of the right to be
enrolled in the Doctoral programme. For very
critical situations, the Academic Board,
following a request of the tutor, can evaluate
the work of the student any time during the
year and can suggest the withdrawal of the
candidate from the Doctoral programme
even before the end of the year.
To enrol in the second and third year, the
student has to pay the annual fee, and must
update his/her study plan, according to the
procedure described in the next paragraph.

3.3 The learning opportunities
Third level courses (hard skills courses)
The list of third level courses is published
annually on: http://dottorato.polito.it/en/
courses. It is possible to add to the study plan
any kind of lectures indicated in the
catalogue of the third level courses, regardless
of the doctoral programme that is offering it.
The course catalogue includes both soft and
hard-skill courses.
What is a soft-skill course?
Soft-skill courses are non-field-specific courses
and are meant to provide students with
transferable skills (i.e. writing and presentation
skills in English, project management,
fundraising, communication of research
results...).

Please, note that soft-skill courses are the same
for all the PhD programmes.
As a general rule, the sole courses recognised
as soft are those offered within the Doctoral
School catalogue. However, if a candidate
found an external course which seems soft to
him/her, it could be possible to request a
preliminary validation of the course as soft,
sending an email to Doctoral School
(scudo@polito.it) providing the syllabus of the
course before attending it. The Director of the
Doctoral School will assess the activity and
give a feedback in a timely manner. Later in
the year, a dedicated Board will re-assess the
pre-approved external soft-skill activity and
decide how many hours shall be validated for
each of them.
Each doctoral programme may require its
students to attend particular modules of
special relevance to the cultural sphere of the
doctoral programme itself.
Corsi di eccellenza (the high quality courses)
are part of third level courses: these courses
are approved only during the year, for this
reason, the declaration of attendance can
only be issued after their publication.
Bachelor and MSc level courses, university
master courses (corsi di I e II livello, Master
Universitari)

the first and the second level or Master level in
their study plan, if the supervisor requires it.

Make sure to verify with the tutor

cultural sphere of the doctoral
programme itself.
3.4 Portale della didattica
The Portale della Didattica is an important tool
which can be used by students for a number
of purposes. The Portale is accessible from the
LOGIN area (on top-right side of any page of
PoliTo website), logging in with username
(s<student number>) and password. On the
first login, the 8-digit password corresponds to
the students birth date (i.e. the password of a
student born the 1st of January 2012 wil be
<01012012>), on a second access, it will be
possible to modify the password. For security
matters, we advise to change the password
after entering in the Portale della didattica for
the first time, bearing in mind that it should be
composed of numbers, letters or numbers and
letters, for a length of min 10 - max 20
characters.
On the toolbar of Portale della Didattica,
several labels are available. The label
segreteria online allows PhD candidates to
upload the personal bank details, to pay
tuition fees, to print self-declarations
(autocertificazioni) and Italian certificates.
Certificates in English language are to be
requested at the Central Student Office or via
the ticketing system, accessing to personal
page (with the student number), and clicking
on the Ticket label on the task bar.

3.5 Cruscotto
Cruscotto is a platform from which verify the
number of hours/points totalized, according to
the new accounting system of the PhD
activity.
Under the section Attivit formative enter the
courses taken in Politecnico, where Ore
riconosciute indicates the number of hours
already attended, and Tipo att. indicates
the type of activity (hard/soft).
TBN: there is not always an exact
correspondence between the actual number
of hours (i.e, COURSE ABC: taught class +
laboratories + team works = 10 h) and the
hours considered for the accounting of
academic activities (attendance of COURSE
ABC gives 6 h, not 10 h because laboratories/
teamwork are not taken into consideration for
the purpose of totalizing the required number
of hours) .
Points are obtained multiplying the number of
hours for the grade. There are only 2 possible
grades: PASS (1,33) or PASS WITH MERIT (1,67).
Grades are awarded only for courses offered
within the official course catalogue. No grades
are associated to external activities.
External courses and seminars
The doctoral students can acquire hard-skill
hours attending external courses and seminars,
upon approval of the academic board,
completing the number of hours required by
the same board and by doctoral school.
External training activities are to be uploaded
by the PhD candidate in the section Attivit
formative esterne of the Cruscotto (through
Portale della Didattica). The coordinator will
see the uploaded activity in his/her own page
and will validate it.
Please, note that Doctoral School cannot
neither upload nor validate the external
activities.

online > Cruscotto ScuDo > accedi.

rule, the sole courses recognised as soft are
those offered within the Doctoral School
catalogue. (For more details please see
paragraph 3.3).

3.6 Italian language course
As provided for in Art. 19.4 of Doctoral School
regulation, foreign PhD candidates are
required to add to their academic study plan
an Italian exam or to submit a certificate of
Italian language knowledge.
If a certificate has already been obtained, its
necessary to come to Doctoral School to hand
in the original one.
If a certificate has not been obtained yet, its
possibile to:
attend the Italian language course (Level
A1) offered by the University Language
Centre (CLA). At the end of the course it is
mandatory to take the Italian exam at
CLA. The sole attendance of CLA course
will not be sufficient to satisfy the Italian
language requirement. Information about
courses at CLA visit https://didattica.polito.it/
cla/en/other_languages/.
For those who took the course earlier and/
or need to take the exam again, its
possible to take only the exam during the
exam sessions (Summer, Winter). Those who
will take the exam at CLA and pass it, will
have the exam registered automatically in
their student page by CLA. The dates of
the exams will be published at the
following link: https://didattica.polito.it/cla/en/
other_languages/. After adding the course
(code 01NDLRV) on their study plan,
students can register in the upcoming
exam session directly from the Portale della
Didattica. During the exam, identification
as PhD candidates will be provided upon
presentation of the magnetic card.
Except taking the CLA course and/or the
CLA exam (Level A1), it is possible to attend
an Italian language course outside
Politecnico: in order to have the course
recognised, a certificate of attendance of
at least 80 hours (level A1) shall be
submitted to Doctoral School.
We remind all foreign students that on
portale della didattica there is a first level 30-
hour streaming Italian course (in the main
page, in the altri corsi section). We strongly
recommend to attend the above-mentioned
course before taking the test.
4. USEFUL INFORMATIONS
4.1 ID Accounts of PhD candidates
Each new PhD candidate is assigned two new
parallel IDs: one of them is valid for the Student
Services, the other one is for Research
Services. Both of them are linked to two
different ID numbers.
A new email is created for each identity
account with the corresponding alias based
on the candidates full name. Furthermore,
each email account has a private access
password (which can be modified by the PhD
candidate after the first access).

Research Services
See appendix 4 for a sample of what is
displayed on the Portale della Didattica (p.
24).
Once logged in (with name.surname@polito.it),
the PhD candidate will be able to choose
among different services.
Webmail:
It allows to access the PhD email account. This
PhD email address will be used by the
Doctoral School (ScuDo) for official
communications and will be visible in
Politecnico address book.
It is possible to use this email account through
Politecnico webmail service, at the following
link: http://mail.polito.it. In the upper part of
the webmails webpage, there is the ID
number for Research Services, to which the
alias name.surname@polito.it is linked.
Choosing a MAIN email account
Since a new PhD candidate will manage two
different email accounts, it is strongly
recommended to choose which email
account is the main one, setting an email
forward from the secondary email account to
the main one.
Portale della Didattica:
It shows the allocated teaching activity and
the hours of taught classes assigned (it does
not contain the same sections of the student -
Portale della Didattica).

Mypoli:
It is a portal from which the student can
access the section La mia ricerca, enter the
IRIS repository system and upload articles and
thesis.
Any change needed on the new account
(adding, removing second surname/name)
can be managed directly by the PhD
candidate opening a ticket through the
ticketing system (as explained in paragraph
3.4).

Student Services
Once logged in as a student (S<student
number>), the student will be able to choose
among different services. They look like those
available in the PhD area but they contain
different functions. For more informations on
Portale della Didattica see paragraph 4.1.
After enrollment as PhD candidates, former
undergraduate PoliTO students will still be able
to access their previous student email and
student account by logging in with the old
student number (printed on the old student
card). However, in order to enter with the old
student number, it is necessary to use the new
password (ddmmyyyy).
Personal data will be stored according to
Legislative Decree 196/2003. For further

4.2 Funds for doctoral candidates
Department funds
From the 2nd year, each doctoral student (with
or without scholarship) can make use of a sum
of about 1.750 Euro/year for the following
expenses:
Inscription or participation in research
conferences and seminars
Mobility in Italy and abroad
The allocated quota for each doctoral student
is deposited annually by the ScuDo in the
favour of interested departments.
For the refund of the expenses contact the
administrative office of the department. The
procedure and the forms may vary for each
department; it is therefore useful to ask directly
for specific information.
4.3 Suspension for maternity and
illness
In case the suspension for illness is longer than
30 days, the student will have his/her
scholarship suspended until he/she resumes full
-time study.
Therefore the scholarship is frozen and the
end of the programme is delayed for a period
of time equal to that of the suspension
duration.
Pregnant students benefiting from a
scholarship, will have their scholarship
suspended during maternity leave until they
resume full-time study and the legal duration
of the Doctoral Course will be extended for
five additional months.
As soon as it is established, the student is urged
to communicate her pregnancy to the
Doctoral School and to the Coordinator of her
PhD programme.

number of prizes at its disposal, depending on
the number of PhD candidates enrolled. The
gross amount of the prizes is 1200 for 2nd year
candidates and 2500 for 3rd year candidates.

Teaching staff, researchers, technical and administrative employees
from Politecnico di Torino. Holders of research grants. Undergraduates,
graduate students, interns, students with a scholarship, if they attend
educational workshops, research and, because of their
specific activity, are exposed to risks. Workers not organically structured
but having special and regular contracts with Politecnico di Torino (i.e.
contracts of coordinated and continuous collaboration).
Staff belonging to other organizations, both public and private, that
due to specific agreements work in the locals of the university. Students
of educational institutions and universities that temporary use
laboratories, instrumentation, equipment and devices, including
equipment provided with display screens, as well as chemical,
physical and organic agents.

5.3 Workers main obligations
The worker is expected to observe the
rules and instructions given by the
employer, the managers, and by the
persons in charge for collective and
individual protection.
The worker must use properly the work
equipment, chemicals and dangerous
substances, means of transport, as well as
safety devices.
The worker must report immediately to the
employer, manager, or person in charge,
any inadequacy or malfunctioning of the
safety devices and equipment at disposal,
as well as any hazardous condition of
which are aware. Within the worker own
skills, he should try to eliminate or reduce
the impact of severe, upcoming
dangerous situations.
The worker does NOT have to perform
operations or actions that hes not in
charge of, and do NOT have to remove or
modify safety devices, or signaling and
control devices, without a specific
authorization.

present a risk of injury or cuts, or injuries in
general, and also explosions, machinery
and equipment.
Health risks (environmental and/or sanitary
risks): this category includes the risks arising
from exposure to chemicals, physical
agents (noise, vibration, electromagnetic
fields, etc.), or related to the sanitary
conditions of the rooms, microclimate,
and in general all those factors which may
affect the workers health in event of
prolonged exposure to the above
mentioned agents.
Risks for occupational health and safety:
this group includes risks arising from
critical situation related to the
organization of work and tasks, shifts,
monotony of the tasks whose performing
actions are rather repetitive and non-
diversified. In this group of risks we can
recall all those factors that cannot be fully
and univocally associated to the other
categories, but which to a certain extent
can expose the workers to several factors
of discomfort.
Pregnant employees

The worker must periodically undergo the
expected medical check-up.
The worker is expected to participate in
training programmes organized by the
employer, and to apply what he has
learned during the training period.
The worker should contribute, together
with the employer, to the fulfilment of all
the duties provided for by law, or
necessary for the protection of the
occupational health and safety.
5.4 Risk for occupational safety
The hazards that may arise in the workplace
can be grouped as follows:
Risks about occupational safety
(accidents): all those risk factors that may
affect the safety of the employees during
The Legislative Decree No. 151/ 01,
"Legislative regulations on the protection
and support of motherhood and
fatherhood", provides that the employer
must adopt appropriate measures for the
protection of the health and safety of
workers during the period of pregnancy, and
up to seven months after childbirth, on
condition that the persons concerned have
informed the employer about their
pregnancy, in accordance with the
regulations in force. The obligation to
disclose the pregnancy is for all female staff,
as well as female students and guests.
The physical agents (e.g., ionizing and non-
ionizing radiation, static magnetic fields,
vibrations, and bumps), chemical and
organic agents, and particular working
conditions (e.g., transport and handling of
cargo, noise, heating stress) may be harmful
to the mother and the unborn child. The
danger may arise from the direct manipulation
of substances or exposure to potentially
hazardous environments, such as laboratories,

especially in the first three months of
pregnancy.
Women who are pregnant, as well as women
who have recently given birth, or are
breastfeeding, should abstain from the use of
chemical, physical and organic agents.
Furthermore, they must NOT stay inside
rooms or work environments where the
above mentioned agents are used. They must
also abstain from potentially dangerous,
harmful activities.
As soon as the state of pregnancy has
been confirmed, the concerned persons
must communicate their pregnancy to the
Prevention and Protection Service, as well as
to the Director or Manager of the institution
where they work.
5.6 Asbestos
At the premises of
Politecnico di Torino there is
the presence of asbestos
cement products, but only
under conditions of confinement
or encapsulation. These products
are identified by the symbol
shown here on the right side.
In presence of this symbol (on
machinery, pipelines, walls,
coverings, panels, or
restricted areas), it is
absolutely forbidden to make,
in the proximity of the
mentioned artifacts, any operation of
mechanical interaction, which can cause
damage to the protection devices or
encapsulation systems.
In the event of damage or discovery of
artifacts with suspected presence of asbestos
immediately inform the Prevention and
Protection Service and follow the instructions

Pericolo - Danger (dangerous agent):
properties or intrinsic quality of a
specific entity (e.g., materials or work
equipment, chemical, physical or
organic agents) and/or work activities
that can be potentially harmful to

humans and the environment.
Rischio - Risk: outcome of the probability
(P) (which is a function of the expected
frequency of occurrence) of the
damaging event, and the severity of the
consequences (M) on the exposed
people.
Danno fisico - Damage: physical injury or
corruption of ones health status,
provoked by an accident or a harmful
agent.
Prevenzione - Prevention: the whole
spectrum of planned regulations or
implemented measures at all stages of
the work activities, to avoid or reduce the
risks in respect of the populations health
and the conservation of the external
environment.
Emergenza - Emergency: dangerous
situation that requires outstanding security
measures.
Incidente - Accident: not-expected event
that causes, or could cause, harm to
people, property and/or environment.
