Old Faces, New
Teams in CFB

As the college football sea-
son begins, many new coaches
will be under the microscope
as they lead their respectives
teams for the first time. Many
big name programs, like LSU,
Oregon, Texas, and Oklaho-
ma will be led by new names
as they will try to replicate
the programs recent success
in the past seasons. Other
schools with new head coach-
es include Cal, Baylor, and
South Florida.
With a few weeks of the
season already having passed,
we have seen these programs
beginning new eras under
their new coaches. Oregon
will look to Willie Taggart to
lead this team back to their
winning culture from the past
decade. Taggart was the head
coach at South Florida last
season, where he was a suc-
cessful 10-2. With Taggarts
departure, South Florida had
to look for a new coach. They
hired Charlie Strong, who
had an underwhelming past
three seasons as Texas head
coach. With Strong no longer
at Texas, they too had to find
a new coach; they hired Tom
Herman, who was the Hous-
ton head coach the past two
seasons. He had a very suc-
cessful 2015 season, leading
the Cougars to a New Years
Hurricanes Effect on
Sports
The Drastic Impact on Sports Across the U.S.

In the past two months the
United States has been hit
with two catastrophic hur-
ricanes. Hurricane Harvey
hit Houston, Texas late Au-
gust and Hurricane Irma hit
Florida early September. The
damage caused by the hurri-
canes has been horrific and
many people have donated
and helped with the relief
for these hurricanes. Twelve
thousand of Texas state na-
tional guard members have
been sent to assist with the
rescue effort. Experts have
said it could take years for
Houston to fully recover from
Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane
Irma is said to take a long time
to recover and is predicted to
be one of the costliest hurri-
canes the United States has
seen. These hurricanes have
put a huge damper on sports
these past months and will
continue to do so. The Tam-
pa Bay Buccaneers at Miami
Dolphins has been postponed
until November 19th.
The Miami Dolphins have
been relocated to Califor-
nia and will remain there for
their game against the Los
Angeles Chargers on Sunday,
September 17th. Since the
announcement of the Miami
Dolphins rescheduled game
against the Buccaneers has
caused the team to have to
play sixteen straight games
Six Peach Bowl win. Herman
will lead a prolific Texas pro-
gram, as he will try to bring
them back to the dynasty they
were in the 2000s. Cal will be
led by new head coach Justin
Wilcox, who was the defen-
sive coordinator at Wisconsin.
He will look to turn around a
Cal team that has had one of
the nations worst defenses
the past couple years. Baylor
hired Matt Rhule from Tem-
ple as their new head coach to
help return them to their win-
ning ways as well.
After many coaches depart-
ed, some schools decided to
promote someone up to head
coach who was already on the
staff rather than search for a
new coach. Some of these in-
clude big time schools, like
LSU promoting defensive line
coach Ed Orgeron to head
coach, and Oklahoma pro-
moted offensive coordinator
Lincoln Riley to head coach
as well, as he will look to lead
them to the College Football
Playoff as one of the nations
top teams. Some big name
coaches moved schools as
well, as P.J. Fleck left Western
Michigan, where he almost
had an undefeated season last
season, to become the head
coach at Minnesota. Anoth-
er big name coach moving
is Lane Kiffin, who was Ala-
bamas offensive coordinator,
to become Florida Atlantics
head coach, as he will look to
put them on the map.

some players. Jay Cutler, the
Quarterback of the Dolphins
has said, Guys kind of need
that bye week to get healthy
and push through the second
half of the season. This is the
latest bye week I ever had.
Its not an ideal situation not
to have a bye for us. Cutler
has also said its going to be
very tough playing 16 weeks
straight. The Jacksonville
Jaguars at Houston Texans
is still going to take place
but the Jaguars will remain
in Houston after the game
and then decide their next
move. A lot of the college
games have been cancelled
or postponed too. This will
put a huge damper on this
years college football sea-
son rankings. For baseball,
the Miami Marlins at Atlan-
ta Braves will still be going
on because the location was
not affected by either hurri-
cane. The Braves announced
on Thursday that they would
be giving free tickets to Flor-
ida residents to any game in
the series. New York Yankees
against Tampa Bay Rays has
been moved to the Mets Citi
field in New York. The Florida
State League has canceled its
championship series sched-
uled for this weekend. All
these sports teams are hoping
for good seasons and fast re-
covery after these catastroph-
ic hurricanes.

NFL Season
Begins

With the end of September
approaching, the National
Football League season will
be a quarter of the way com-
plete. Many fans all over the
country have been spending
their Sundays watching their
favorite teams play, whether
at the game or on television.
With the first couple weeks of
the season completed, we have
seen every team in the league
play and have gathered in-
formation on how each team
has been playing so far. As a
surprise to many, the defend-
ing champion New England
Patriots opened their season
with a loss to the Kansas City
Chiefs. Some experts have
been thinking that this could
lead to the end of the Patriots
dynasty, but most still think
that the loss will just be more
motivation for the defending
champs to bounce back.

College Football edition

With the start of school, all
across the country fall school
sports have begun. From
volleyball, water polo, field
hockey, and many peoples
favorite, football, all have
started their seasons. Along
with high school sports, colle-
giate sports have also gotten
underway too, most notably
college football. Throughout
the college football season,
we will see numerous exciting
games weeklyfrom rivalries
to upsets to dramatic end-
ings, like the UCLA vs Texas
A&M game in opening week
this year, and of course all
those crazy high-stake games
as teams fight to get into the
College Football Playoff. With
conference play having just
started, we have already seen
some big games, including the
huge USC win over Stanford,
and some big nonconference
games, like Oklahoma vs
Ohio State, where Oklahoma
took the win.
As October begins, college
football fans will be eager to
in the opening week featured
the defending NFC champion
Atlanta Falcons, who escaped
with a win after a goal-line de-
fensive stand vs the Chicago
Bears. Another big game was
between the Seattle Seahawks
and the Green Bay Packers,
where the Packers came out
with a win. One game that
may have surprised was the
Los Angeles Rams command-
ing blowout win over the In-
dianapolis Colts. With Colts
quarterback Andrew Luck out
with an injury, the Rams de-
fense harassed backup Scott
Tolzien, along with the Rams
offense dominating the Colts
defense. Led by new head
coach Sean McVay, the Rams
began the season in a domi-
nating fashion.
With one Los Angeles team
winning, the other LA com-
petitor, the Los Angeles Char-
gers, did not start the season
as they wanted. Opening the
season in Denver vs the Bron-
cos, the Chargers entered the

StubHub Center, which only
seats about 30,000. The atten-
dance in their home opener
was only around 25,000. The
Chargers missed a game-win-
ning field goal in the final
seconds and lost 19-17 to the
Miami Dolphins. Many are
concerned about how the
Chargers will do establishing
a fanbase now that they have
moved to Los Angeles, and
they will be competing with
the Rams to win over the fans

Record Breaking Sports
From Baseball to Football

Baseball and football fans
have had a lot of record break-
ing excitement recently. On
September 4th, 2017, a Major
League Baseball world record
was tied by the Arizona Dia-
mondbacks, J.D. Martinez. In
a game against the L.A. Dodg-
ers, Martinez hit four home
runs in two innings. This
particular record has only
been accomplished eighteen
times in Major League Base-
ball history. joined the Arizo-
na Diamondbacks in July of
this year. When Martinez was
asked about when the fourth
hit went out, he stated Its
kind of one of those things
where youre kind of laughing
about it. Was I shocked? No.
Going up there and hitting it,
didnt really shock me. I was
just happy it went over. So
far, he has been the only play-
er on the entire team to have
tied the all time single-game
record. Ever since he joined
the team, J.D. Martinez has
hit a total of eighteen home
runs in forty games.The Dia-
mondbacks were figured to be
the underdogs going into the
season, but have definitely
progressed considering they
beat the Dodgers with a dras-
tic score of thirteen to zero.
This victory would continue
the Diamondbacks eleventh
game winning streak.
On Sunday, the UCLA Bruins
football team played a remark-
able game going up against
Texas A&M. During the last
eighteen minutes of the game,
UCLA was losing by a total
of thirty-four points. In the
fourth quarter, Josh Rosens
succeeded in throwing four
impressive touchdown pass-

Over the years at La Jol-
la High School, we have had
many amazing teams led by
great athletes. From foot-
ball to basketball to baseball,
along with many more, we
have seen many exceptional
student-athletes come and go
through our Viking program.
Whereas some of these ath-
letes finished their careers
in their sport after graduat-
ing, having played through-
out their high school careers
and even before. Whereas
others have even continued
their careers after graduat-
ing, going on to play their
respective sports in college
or professionally. From our
most recent graduating class,
the Class of 2017, there were
many athletes that went on
to continue their athletic ca-
reers in college. One of La
Jollas most prolific basket-
ball players in the schools
history, Reed Farley, enrolled
at Harvard and will be play-
ing in his first season this fall.
He received many accolades
throughout his 4-year cam-
paign at La Jolla High, all 4
years as a member of the var-
sity team. Farley averaged 19
points per game in his senior
year, which was halted by an
injury, and finished his La Jol-
strategic plays, which one
of them involved catching a
26 yard pass. After the game
Rosens said,It feels great. Its
been a long, long off season. A
lot of thinking. A lot of reflec-
tion. This would become the
second largest comebacks in
all of college football history.
What seemed to appear like
a definite defeat for UCLA
turned into a miracle as the
Bruins took the win with an
astonishing score of forty five
to forty four. The initial re-
cord was made by Michigan
state in 2006, but the UCLA
Bruins were only one point
scarce from demolishing it.
Another upset occurred on
the same exact day in college
football when the underdog
team, Howard University,
played against UNLV. The
large majority of football fans
figured UNLV would be able
to take the win easily. Fans
claimed the game was suppos-
edly over before it had even
began to start. However,these
fans were completely shocked
when Howard University
won the game by three points.
(The score being forty three
to forty) Due to the fact that
most people placed their bets
on UNLV winning, this lead
to a gigantic upset in Vegas
lines. UNLV head coach,Tony
Sanchez reflected, Extremely
disappointing outcome, the
most frustrated I have ever
been since Ive been here. We
shot ourselves in the foot so
many times early on in that
first half. Our inability to play
well on our third downs and
our defense the entire game
was pretty evident...Thats
a game we fully except and
should win and we did not.

La Jolla High athletes from
the Class of 2017 continuing
their athletic careers in col-
lege are Nico Ivanov and John
Murphy, both of whom are
currently playing water polo
for Johns Hopkins University.
They began their season in
early September, helping lead
the Bluejays to an undefeated
4-0 record to start their colle-
giate careers. They both look
forward to continuing this
success throughout the sea-
son.
Onto the professional lev-
elit is pretty rare to have
two children, both whom are
professional athletes. Well La
Jollas own Mrs. Hutchins has
two sonsKyle and Bradley
Zimmer, who both graduated
from La Jolla, went on to be
first round picks in the Major
League Baseball draft. Kyle,
25, is currently a pitcher in
the Kansas City Royals mi-
nor league organization, and
Bradley, 24, is a center field-
er on the Cleveland Indians.
Bradley made his MLB debut
earlier this year and is having
a solid rookie season for the
World Series contender Indi-
ans. Unfortunately, he broke
his hand on September 10 and
will miss the remainder of the
season.

Fall Sports Preview

This year at La Jolla High
School, our fall sports teams
look very promising. There
are eight sports teams that
are competing in this years
fall sports season .
The girls fall sports teams
this season include, field
hockey, cross country, volley-
ball, golf, cheerleading, and
tennis. Our girls tennis team
is coming back this year as
defending D1 CIF champions.
Their team is lead by Alex
Kuo returns as the captain of
the team who is nationally
ranked 272 in the U.S for high
school girls tennis players.
Field hockey returns from an
11-12 record last year look-
ing to improve upon that. Mr.
Quesnell leads the girls golf
team this fall towards a hope-
ful CIF title. Cross Country
looks to run hard this year,
lead by captain Ines Robo and
with the addition of star Sier-

The water polo team lost in
the CIF championship game
last year to Vista High School
8-6, but look to have anoth-
er deep run at CIF under the
coaching of Mr. Atwell. The
football team lost in the quar-
terfinals of D3 CIF to Bishops
in a rough game but has a
strong senior class this year
hoping to lead the team. Boys
cross country is led again this
year by senior captains Cole
Wolf, Casper Abbasi, Mitch
Morrison, and Raul Jackson.
With a new coach, the boys
have been pushed harder
then harder than ever to help
them improve their times.
Our fall teams have a lot of
potential and high hopes this
year.
