Lesson 2 21/10/17

Last class, I presented some exercises in order to evaluate your English knowledge.
From now on, we are going to learn some basic structures that will help you better
communicate with an English speaking person.

1. Today we are going to learn about the present simple.

We use the present simple for things that are true in general, or for things that happen
sometimes or all the time.

I speak Portuguese.

I work at the hospital.

I study a lot.

I like to sleep.

I need to think.

I have a dog.

In the English language, there are two different congugations in the present simple.

Subject pronouns Conjugation

I eat
You eat
He eats
She eats
It eats
We eat
They eat

You must have noticed that the subject pronouns He, She and It have a different
conjugation. For these pronouns you must add the letter s at the end of the word.

Victria drinks coffee in the morning.

Leo plays the guitar very well.

However, some verbs are a little different. For verbs that end in o, s, sh, ch, x and z
you will need to add es

John goes to the movies on weekends.

Kelly misses the bus every day.

The maid (Ms. Cirley) washes the dishes after lunch.

She watches TV at night.

The mechanic fixes the car.

The verbs that in consonant + y, like the verb study have a different conjugation. You
must remove the letter y and add ies.

He studies at Ulbra.

Now, lets practice a little.

I get up at six a.m. I eat toast and I drink coffee for breakfast. On Mondays and
Tuesdays, I take the bus to the university, but on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, I
go to school by car.

I like to study very much. I study with my friend, Loreci. She works at the hospital with
me. She helps me a lot. Sometimes, we have lunch together and study for the tests. We
have a lot of fun! I go home in the evening and have dinner with my family. After that I
get ready to go to bed.

TIP: want x would like

We use would like for requests and wishes.

As you are going to travel to another country, you must be careful when you use the
word want. It may sound rude when you are ordering something at a restaurant, for
example.

I would like to order the Caesar Salad, please.

I would like a window seat, please.
