CHAPTER I
Introduction

One of favorite quotation is, "Everybody is a genius. But

if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live

its whole life believing that it is stupid". People still

maintain the incomplete sentiment that "success" is coupled with

a standardized score or high IQ career. This can really limit

someone's perspective to carrer possibilities if they don't

relate to this standard definition of success. If we broaden

our horizon to encompass a wider range of diverse aptitudes, we

can find a career where our natural strengths and talents shine.

One way to expand on career possibilities is to use multiple

intelligences. The term "multiple intelligences" was coined by

developmental psychologist, Dr. Howard Gardner in 1983, as a way

to describe people's natural inclination for learning and

engaging in the world.

One of the most difficult decisions in life especially to

students who wish to persue their education is the career

choice. For others, the answer to question, "What do you want to

be when you grow up?" was to be determined and identified

through a pathway of choosing a career. A variety of factors can

influence the choice of a career path (Hewitt,2008). In relation

to this change, the students needs to identify their inclination

based on multuple intelligences (Gardner, 2007).

Other factors that influence on the choice of career are job

opportunities and professional growth. The definition of choice

incorporates two components: first is the availability of

alternatives, which presents an objective reality, and the

second one is the act of preference, which involve subjective

process. If a reference to career 'choice' is made, availability

to career choices and the dynamics of choosing a career should

be examined. Hence, in order for career choice to take place ,

there should be alternative career routes available and there

should be an individual preference between these career options.

What began as a theory of intelligance, Intended for

psychologists, has become a tool that educators around the world

seize with enthusiasm. The theory of multiple Intelligence (MI)

brings a pragmatic approach to how we define Intelligence and

allows us to use our students' strenghts to help them learn.

Students who read and write well are still smart, but they are

joined by other students who have different talents. Through MI,

School and classroom become settings in which a variety of

skills and abilites can be used to learn and solve problem.

Being smart is no longer determined by a score on a test; being

smart determine by how well students learn in variety of ways.

Everyone is born possessing the nine intelligences.

Nevertheless, all students will come into the classroom with

differrent sets of developed intelligences. This means that each

child will have his own unique set of intellectual strengths and

weaknesses. These sets determine how easy (or difficult) it is

for a student to learn information when it is presented in a

particular manner.
We, as human, have a penchant for measuring things. Perhaps

the beginning of the modern search for ways to measure

intelliegence was the creation of the I.Q test. Gardner's theory

of multiple intelligences resonates so strongly for many

educators because it offers a model for acting on what we

believe: all children have strenghts. Accepting Gardner's theory

of multiple Intelligences has several implications for teachers

in terms of classroom instruction.

The theory States that all nine Intelligences are needed to

productively function in society. Teachers, therefore should

think of all Intelligences as equaly important. This is in great

contrast to traditional education systems which typicaly place

strong emphasis on the development and use verbal and

mathematical Intelligences. Thus, the theory of multiple

intelligences implies that the educators should recognize and

teach to a broader range of talents and skills. Gardners theory

of multiple intelligences (MI) is well meaning, and taps into a

very face valid issue. People, regardless of how smart they

are, tend to be good at different things. Some people are

excellent sportsman, wonderful artists, or are very inn tune

with nature. No one argues that these traits are accurate in

some people.

Definition of Terms

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) - is a total score derived from

several standardized tests designed to assess human

ntelligence. The abreviation IQ was coined by the

psychologist William Stern for the German term

intelligenzquotient.

Intelligence ones capacity for logic, understanding, self-

awareness, learning, emotional knowledge, planning, creativity,

and problem solving.

Career an occupation undertaken for a significant period of

persons life and with opportunities for progress.

Senior High School refers to Grade 11 and 12, the last two

years of K-12 program that DepEd has been implementing since

2012 . Students begin to study SHS the subject that will

introduce them to their preferred career path.

Enthusiasm a feeling of energetic interest in a particular

subject or activity and a deesire to be involved in itt, or a

subject that produces such a feeling.

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature

According to Gardner (2007), "the broad spectrum of

students and perhaps the society as a whole would be better

served if disciplines could be presented in a number of ways and

learning could be assesed through a variety of means". Gardner

(2004) asserted that his intelligences were consistent with how

most biologists think about the mind and brain. Gardner (1999)

claimed that each intelligence operates from a separate area

of the brain, arguing that MI theory demands that linguistic

processing, for example, occur via different set of neural

mechanism than does spatial or interpersonal processing. Chen

(2004) defended MI theory against the claim that it lacks

emperical support arguing that theory is not necessarily

valuable because it is supported by the results of emperical

tests and that intelligence is not tangible object that can

be measured. She also claimed that the novelty of intelligences

requires new measures and that MI theory has already been

validated in its succeessful classroom application. Chen

further claimed that MI theory better accounts for cognitive

skill profiles in both brain-injured and typical individuals

than do IQ measures.

More recently, Gardner (1999) defined intelligence as " a

bio-psychological potential to to process information that can

be activated in a cultural setting to solve problems or create

products that are of value in a culture.

Gardner (1999) believed that most real-world activities rquire a

combinatin of different intelligences working in concert for

success. Shearer (1999) develop the Multiple Intelligence

Developmental Assestment Scales (MIDAS). The MIDAS was

originally developed as a structured interview to be

conducted with the family members of a brain trauma survivor to

describe the patients premorbid intellectual profile (Shearer

2007).

According to Grocia (1992) students externally-acquired

attitudes and expectations affects the outcome of their college

experience and that students who are pursuing identified

majors and following career paths find it easier to adjust to

the academic, social, and emotiional demands that come with

college life. A study of Tinto (1993) and Braxton (2000) stated

that external influences affect the career chooices of students,

but once these choices made, students are more successful in

integrating into the schools intteernal community, which,in,

turn, facilitates persistence to successful completion of the

career training program.

CHAPTER III
Methodology

Research Design
This study made use of descriptive method. It utilized
survey questionnaires to the respondents to gather information
to the related study. this study was conduct in Gainza National
High School , with the participation of three sections of
grade 12 stuudents as the respondents of our research.

Instrumentation
Survey questionnaires was use to facilitate questions that
helped this study. These questionnaires were consist of thirty
(30) to probe on the relationship of multiple intelligences to
career choices of Senior High School graduating students of
Gainza National High School.

Data Gathering
The researcher surveyed 30 student in grade 12 with 10
representing each class. A week was allotted to conduct the
survey. Thi survey provided an opportunity for the researcher
and the students to interact with each other to know if there
is a significant relationship between multiple intelligence and
career choices of Senior High School Graduating students of
Gainza National High School.
Sampling Procedure

The researcher made use of selected sampling procedure in the

selection of respondents since the study was focused on the

particular group (Senior High School grade 12)
