Sample Co-Teaching Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

English Language Arts 6th grade Key Ideas and details 6RL1- 6RL 3
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of
the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

Objective (Explicit):
After students listen to a song of their choice, they will identify key terms. Students will be able to write two
sentences with their interpretation of the most prevalent theme.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):


Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see.
Assign value to each portion of the response
Each student will be required the day before the lesson to bring earphones from home and choose a PG-13 song that
they can either relate to or just enjoy overall that is appropriate. They will have 5 minutes to listen to the song and while
they are listening they will point out key vocabulary words they believe identifies the theme. When the 5 minutes are
over they will be able to discuss with their group their choice of vocabulary for 5 minutes. After those 5 minutes are over
they will write a summary of the believed theme of the song.

Students are allowed to choose a song that they relate to or generally enjoy. It is important to understand what the artist
wants the audience to know and take from their song. Students will begin to make this connection towards novels,
future readings in class, and movies.
