Spiders turn Jerusalem creek into ethereal haunted forest
Millions of tiny long-jawed spiders
have spun enormous cobwebs, turning
a Jerusalem creek into a most unusual
natural spectacle. The giant cobwebs,
spun by spiders called Tetragnathas,
shroud entire trees and envelop the for-
est to create a phenomenon rarely seen
in the Middle East.
The spiders, which usually are soli-
tary creatures who like to live in damp
or swampy habitats, are attracted to
the Soreq Creek for its huge mosquito
population. The creek contains treated
sewage, which is full of nutrients that

love to eat the mosquitoes, and so their
numbers explode.
These vast spider webs wont last
much longer, however. There may be
millions of spider egg sacs and tiny baby

wording of the biblical texts which words were in and
which were out. It was also a very important source for
how the Bible was interpreted in early times.

Birthright Israel (free trips to Israel for young people),
Masa (long-term experiences in Israel for the same
cohort), Moishe House (group living for, you guessed
it, young people), and PJ Library (free Jewish books for
families with young children).
But even as they touted these successes, and a
string of relatively healthy fundraising years, a note
of anxiety crept into the proceedings. There were
small-group breakout sessions on differentiating the
umbrella philanthropies like federation in a crowded
Jewish charitable marketplace and turning elusive
millennials into philanthropists. And the speakers
repeated emphasis on unity and the power of the
collective suggested that both were if not slipping
away, then at least under siege.
JFNA CEO Jerry Silverman was blunt in describing
the challenges in his address on Sunday.
You see, it is not that there is no longer the desire
and need for community, he said to the 3,000 del-
egates gathered at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown
Los Angeles. It is how people define community or
how people choose to engage that has changed.
Silverman described a number of areas around
which a diverse community could rally: lowering
the enormous cost of Jewish day school education,
helping the less fortunate, engaging young people,
and as he put it, meeting the unfulfilled promise of
Israel being the home for all Jews regardless of reli-
gious affiliation.

most vexing issues facing Federations today: How do
we balance Federations philanthropic mission with
our role as the communitys central address when
were increasingly drawn into controversial politi-
cal issues?
Pluralism isnt the only such issue a panel discus-
sion sought to heal internal communal wounds over
the bruising Iran nuclear deal fight of a few years
back. But its an issue that not only creates antagonism
between the diaspora and Jerusalem (in his plenary
address, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin implored the

You could sense the release when the public ses-
sions turned to inspiration, not division. Delegates
were wowed by a millennial roundtable featur-
ing three young social entrepreneurs who served up
advice on how to reach their generation.
If you want to engage millennials, said Rachel
Samekh, founder and CEO of Swipe Away Hunger,
you have to be curious about who we are.
There was ecstatic applause for Mohammed Al
Samawi, a Muslim advocate for interfaith relations
who escaped the civil war in his native Yemen with
the help of three young Jewish people he met online.
The convention was roused by a little old-time reli-
gion from Rabbi David Wolpe of this citys Sinai Tem-
ple, who warned that too many Jews are strangers
and immigrants to our own tradition. We dont teach
our children what made our people our people.
But it was another Los Angeles rabbi who captured
the hope and anxiety of this years G.A.
You cant build ... Jewish identity with crisis and
fear, said Rabbi Ed Feinstein of Valley Beth Shalom.
Its the wrong language. Lighting the way.
If nothing else, this years G.A. was a search for that
new language. JTA WIRE SERVICE

It was an understandable reaction to
witnessing tens of thousands in Warsaw

The march, an annual event that began

Led by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks the major-

shared the experience of exile in grand cities like Lon-

by the Tsarist authorities. Their organizing principle of
democratic centralism left little room for any dissent,
as Lenins literary eviscerations of his opponents attest.
Had it all remained polemical, history would have
been different. In its Russian setting, though, Bolshevik
rule meant famine, death, and an ever-intrusive police
state. To begin with, Russia was hardly a natural candi-

of The Valley Hospital and Valley Health System. This top Twitter and Facebook. When dealing with someone in psychological trauma,
grade is a reflection and a result of our longstanding focus most people instinctively hold, calm, and soothe the
person.
That may be well-intentioned but its not help-
ful, according to clinical social worker and volunteer
medic Moshe Farchi, whose counterintuitive approach
recently was adopted as the Israel Health Ministrys
national model for psychological first aid.
Farchi is head of Stress, Trauma, and Resilience Stud-
ies at Tel-Hai College, and is teaching and using his
method in several other countries as well.
While serving as a reserve mental health officer in
the Israel Defense Forces over the past decade, Farchi
noticed that the approaches used to help traumatized
soldiers in the field simply werent effective. Then he
began seeing new research showing the scientific rea-
sons for that failure.
He determined to create a new psychological first-
aid model based on the latest science and easily imple-
mented by anyone on the scene, not only by mental
health professionals who arent as likely to be available
immediately.
I wanted to provide something the whole commu-
nity could do, Farchi says.
The program he devised centers on six Cs: cognitive
communication, challenge, control, commitment, and
continuity.
The Six Cs model calls for activating the traumatized
person mentally and physically. Activating might mean
assigning a task, asking the person to take a walk, or giv-
ing them decisions to make. Often those in trauma arent
hurt but have witnessed or otherwise been involved in a
frightening situation.
But even injured people in psychological trauma can
be given small decisions in order to feel in control, says
Farchi. They can be offered a drink of water or asked
to direct first-responders where to stand, for instance.
The success of the Six Cs model has been docu-
mented. For example, in the summer of 2014, residents
of an Israeli town on the Gaza border who were trauma-

Two plays about theatrical magic

audience is prepared when Mme. Trassek
begins wailing and crying.
The couple are performers in the Yid-
dish theater in pre-World War I Czecho-
slovakia, which means they overact their
way wildly through skits, jokes, and
mangled Shakespeare. Mme. Trassek is
a hit as Queen Leah, for instance, which
loosely follows King Lear. The queen has
three sons instead of three daughters,
and the youngest is her favorite. You get
the picture.
Business is not good for these two, so
Mme. Trassek supplements their income
by selling hot sweet potatoes from a cart.
What they need is a decent script. Luck-
ily, they run into a young man who is des-
perately unhappy selling nuts and bolts on
the road. As he dutifully writes his father,
the act of selling doesnt come naturally to
him, but writing evidently does. When he
