Background

The World Service is going through a period of rapid and exciting transformation. The government
has recently invested in a series of initiatives (called World 2020) which aim to increase the impact
and reach of BBC World Service over the next four years. In addition to specific new services, the
initiatives aim to strengthen the BBCs overall international offer to the benefit of all audiences.

The BBCs World Service Group delivers international news output of the BBC and comprises of BBC
World Service, BBC World News television, BBC Monitoring and the BBCs international online news
services. Together, these services provide a focal point for viewers and listeners around the world,
attracting a combined global weekly audience of over 283 million. The World Service sits within this
broader division, delivering journalism on TV, radio and online across the globe in 30 languages.

Job Purpose

As Research Executive within the World Services Audiences team, you will be involved with
delivering actionable insights across BBC World Service, helping journalists, product managers,
marketers and business development teams better understand their audiences and make data-
driven decisions. As part of this you will support on a range of research projects, both quantitative
and qualitative.

Principal Accountabilities

To produce analysis of qualitative and quantitative research including charts, tabulation and
report writing as agreed with other team members.
To contribute to research projects as part of a wider project team.

Main Duties

Project management:
Management of small projects throughout their lifecycle, including commissioning, daily project
management, analysis of results and presentation of findings.
Support wider team with larger projects as part of a project team.

Analysis:
Analyse data collected through surveys or via other quantitative research sources to pinpoint the
insights.

Communication:
Collaborate effectively with the rest of the Audiences team.

Effectively explain analysis and concepts in a manner that is tailored to an audience of varying
degrees of digital understanding and at different levels of seniority.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required

Essential

Ability to apply analytical skills to answer business questions converting raw data into
practical insights

Demonstrable experience of combining and interpreting data from different sources to form
a clear and cohesive understanding of audiences

Experience of media industry standard audience measurement approaches with ability to


use analysis software such as Telmar, SPSS and SNAP.

Ability to communicate data and insights to stakeholders with varying degrees of


understanding of digital analytics and from different cultural backgrounds

A thorough and accurate approach to working with data

Ability to analyse large sample (1000+) datasets and convert data into practical insights.

Good collaborator with experience of working as part of a project team

Comfortable delivering to (sometimes tight) deadlines

Interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders in


different disciplines and at different levels within the organisation

Demonstrable experience of having worked with quantitative data

Desirable

Experience of market research or social research


Experience of digital analytics
Experience of having worked in a news or ability to demonstrate a personal interest in
international news and affairs
Demonstrable interest in developments in the International media industry
Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research.
