Groups fight
griz delisting
in court
By LEW FREEDMAN

A coalition of conservation groups

with the backing of at least one
Native American tribe went to court
Wednesday morning in an attempt
to overturn the U.S. Fish and Wild-
life Services decision to delist the
Yellowstone grizzly bear from the
Endangered Species Act.
Officially, control of bear manage-
ment in the region was turned over
to the states of Wyoming, Montana
and Idaho on July 31 after the feder-
al agency made its decision in June.
The Humane Society of the Unit-
ed States, the Sierra Club, the Fund
for Animals, Earthjustice and other
groups, plus the Northern Cheyenne
Tribe, filed suit with the U.S. Dis-
trict Court in Missoula, Mont. The
organizations had pledged to fight
the Fish and Wildlife plan to remove
federal protection for the grizzly and
this was a planned follow-through.
A statement from the Humane
Society called the federal delisting
move a wrong-headed decision
and said the complaint alleges mul-
tiple violations of the Endangered
Species Act and Administrative Pro-
cedure Act. The second act refers

Preparing for School

Begins at Birth
Many parents wait until their child is ready to enter school to
have them screened. By then, a lot of learning may have already
been missed. In fact, 90% of brain development occurs in the
first few years.
Thats why tracking a childs developmental process is
an essential part of early childhood. The earlier delays are
addressed, the more opportunity exists for increased growth and
independence. Delaying intervention will likely result in the need
for more costly and less effective interventions in the future. A
developmental screening can prepare your child for school and
improve their life forever.
All developmental services are free regardless of income. The
only thing you cannot afford to do is wait.

Meeteetse Museums joins in fun with Archaeology Fair

The Meeteetse Museums
will be hosting its inaugural
Labor Day Archaeology Fair
on Labor Day.
The free fair will consist of
a variety of fun hands-on sta-

adults) operated by archaeolo-
gists and museum profession-

The stations will run from
10 a.m. (immediately follow-
ing the Meeteetse Labor Day
parade) until 4 p.m. A Pass-
port to the Past system will
be in place, whereby everyone
visiting a station will get their
passport stamped. Those visit-
ing all stations by 4 p.m. will
receive a Junior Archaeolo-
gist Certificate.
Among the archaeologists
committed to running a sta-
tion are: Beth Horton, PhD,
