Mentor Interview-

For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job?

Realities: That not every patient comes in with an ideal situation. People can be more challenging. There
really isnt any fantasies for this field, as sad as that is.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
Masters in Nursing and FNP, American academy of nurse practitioners, CMEs and training, renewing
liscense , DEA numbers
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.

Very busy, running around, lots of patients, lots of charting, labs, test results, paperwork

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

Good job security, always sick people, work wherever you want to work, transfer license. Growth in job
availability.

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?

Depends, starting out, just above 90,000, highest seen is 140000

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

Depends on how much you want to do, go from being a provider to working in a school of nursing or
teaching, good variety.

7. Favorite aspects of the job?

Getting to see new patients routinely, watching the patients grow up through the years and seeing how
they are changing.

8. Least favorite aspects?

Difficult patients, challenging, people who dont take medical advice that they need and dont follow
through then condition gets worse. Parents who think something is wrong with their child but there is
no signs or symptoms for the condition they are thinking about and then demanding medicine that we
cant legally give them without a diagnosis.

9. Most memorable experience?

Getting a child to where they need to be when they diagnosed her with cancer at the clinic and getting
her the help she needed so that she could get better quicker.

10. What was the main reason you started this job?

I like healthcare and kids and trying to make them feel better when they are sick. It makes me feel good
about my job and makes me glad that I chose what I chose.

The information I will use for my research information in my final presentation will be

The average pay that a FNP gets paid annually- The average starting annual pay for a Family
Nurse Practitioner is a little over $90,000 and the highest pay my mentor has seen so far has
been $140,000.
The education levels needed to get a job as an FNP are a masters in nursing and CME training
along with DEA number training.
The day to day routines of someone working this job are getting a few charts done before the
first patient, going in and seeing the patients whether it is a WCC, a EPSTD, or they came in for a
specific reason. Doing charts in between patients helps so that they dont have to stay after as
long charting all their patients.
