How to save water

I would like to cover the three places where water usage can be reduced.
They are bathrooms, garden or lawns, food mess. Well i would suggest few ideas
and steps that would definitely help in minimizing the use of water.
Idea and its Implementation:
First and foremost use of water is bathroom and toilets. At present we have taps
which is operated manually. Here we can use the sensor type taps. Generally pe
ople waste lot of water during brushing, face wash, hand wash by opening the tap
for long time. This can be avoided when the automated sensor type taps are inst
alled. Also the important work is the maintenance of these bathrooms. When there
is any leakage or fault in pipes reported, then immediately it should be fixed
so as to avoid water loss. The same can be followed in wash room in food mess.
Particularly when people are finished eating the dishes can be made to soak in s
oap water or hot boilers then moved to cleaning which requires less effort and l
ess amount of water. In the laundry rooms where the washing machines are loaded
with clothes, everyone should make sure they set the time on average around one
hour for washing. I have noticed few machines running for nearly three hours. A
proper manual should be kept on how these machines should be operated.
A good step would be measuring the quantity of water consumed by each blocks and
putting a rough data in all blocks. Particularly mentioning how each hostel blo
ck has consumed the water. Then the data has to be put up in a common notice boa
rd. This would bring awareness among people about their usage and will create a
thought while spending water. Additionally, any considerable increase in usage
of water can be noted.
Next big measure is to be taken for the use of water in lawns or gardens. Genera
lly the water is spread using pipes across the area and this will definitely was
te lot of water. There are good sprinkler system valves available which spread w
ater evenly across all directions and with suitable time limit the job of wateri
ng garden or lawn is done. These sprinklers need to be installed in the lawn ar
ea at suitable distance so as to cover the complete lawn area. Only thing is the
need for operator to turn on & off the sprinklers when he wants to water the fi
eld.
The important measure would be the recycling the water particularly the water fr
om food mess and bathroom. This recycled water in turn should be used only for t
he watering of lawns. This step would definitely save the water use which was ea
rlier spent on gardening and lawns.
Cost of Implementation against the benefits:
The installation of automatic sensor water taps will definitely cost more than t
he ordinary taps but its benefits overweighs its cost. Also the maintenance prob
lem will not occur as mostly students will be using it with knowledge. Roughly c
ompared to normal taps this sensor taps cost extra of Rs.200.
Setting up of water boilers in mess will reduce man work and the benefits are cl
eanliness, quick process & reliability. The initial cost will be the factor to b
e noted but for such large scale work definitely cost should not be a problem.
The setting up of recycling unit will be a onetime investment and its benefits w
ill be for a long time. It would be definitely be expensive in setting up a re
cycle unit but with more number of students accommodating the campus and with in
crease in the hostel block the recycling of water would definitely provide a con
siderable amount of recycled water to be spent on various places.
