Sprinklers in Residential Applications
Home sprinkler systems have advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages
include potentially extinguishing a fire within two minutes, protect other rooms from fire
and/or smoke damage, and most importantly gives the residents enough time to escape
before a fire can become too consuming (Advantages, 2017). There are a couple of
disadvantages of having sprinkler systems, which include stagnation of water and causing
possible bacteria in our water reservoirs; though, connecting the water supply to a washing
machine, dishwasher, toilet or other fixture can prevent water from becoming stationary
(Residential, 2001). The residential building would also have to conform existing meters and
plumbing fixtures to be designed to supply the water flow needed to allow sprinklers systems in
a residential area, according to the International Fire Code. There are currently some states
that require home sprinkler systems, such as California, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
(Home, 2016). Other places, like Illinois, allow for locals to adopt the fire code, but are not
required (2016). Then there are some states that have made laws that ban local jurisdictions
from adopting the fire code, such as Arizona and Pennsylvania (2016).
There are really three stances on issue on requiring all renovations to include sprinkler
systems: yes, they can save lives; no, it is too costly, and we dont want the government
involved in homebuilding; and let decision be up to the resident. Our stance is that home
sprinkler systems should be in every building, including, if not especially, residential buildings.
In California, in which there is a mandate that all new homes are equipped with a home
sprinkler system, explain that they are important because the way houses are built now, they
burn faster and hotter (Faturechi, 2016). In a case in New York, a 2-year-old was caught in a
house fire and unfortunately did not survive (2016). Fire marshals stated that if a home
sprinkler system was set in place it would have probably saved the little girls life (2016). In fact,
homes that require sprinkler systems, deaths per 1000 residential fires were 81% less than
homes that did not (Ahrens, 2017). Homebuilders, despite these statistics, swayed law makers
in 25 states that it would severely increase the cost of buying houses (Faturechi, 2016). How
much would it cost to install a home sprinkler? On average, they now cost $1.35 per square
foot (Frequently Asked Questions, 2017). So, you would be paying about $2,700 for a 2,000-
square foot house. So, the argument that it would be too costly is not so true. Beside financial
cost, the cost of keeping your family safe is priceless, and thats where the true cost should lay.

Justification and Reflection of the Solution

The concept for this project is a home for a single man
whose hobbies include having guests and optimal, functional
space. The design goals were to please the client with a full,
open living area, clean dining room and luxurious master
bedroom. This home reflects simplicity, mid-century style,
modern decor with large windows and an open floor plan with
consistency and colors that signifies the Bauhaus Style Project.
For this space plan, I chose functional furniture pieces,
reachable lighting and to have an open, spacious floor plan. The
schematic plans are a process of adding and eliminating
towards the final design of this residence. Schematic plans are
to provide know aspects of an interior space such as room
labels, interior walls, doors with swings, windows, furniture,
lighting and accessories. With these in consideration,

designers illustrate clear and precise ideas.
