District Technology Training Plan

UMUC

Natalie Erickson
Erickson - DTTP 2

The District
Our Lady of Good Counsel is a Private high school in Olney, Maryland. With a
student body of about 1,200 students, Good Counsel prides itself on the feeling of
community and service to others. Students who graduate from Good Counsel leave
with a great experience of serving others, community, and a well rounded and
challenging academic experience. Part of this experience entails offering students
the best technology experience to prepare them for their future. Good Counsel has a
one-to-one program with each student and teacher having an iPad to use for school
purposes. In addition to the iPads, each classroom has an Apple TV allowing
teachers the ability to maximize the interaction with students and the technology.

The Problems
Good Counsel offers numerous opportunities for teachers to utilize
technology within their classrooms. If there is an application that a teacher wants to
use that needs to be paid for then administration is more then willing to give the
teachers what they need. This support makes a difference in the willingness of the
teachers; however, the problem is that not enough teachers are using technology
within their teaching practices. After speaking to some teachers, the majority feels
that they could do more within their classrooms but they either dont know what to
do or have the time to do it. Teachers at Good Counsel also dont utilize the
classroom technology already in place simply because they dont know how it works
or to trouble shoot problems that occur. There are also some teachers who have no
interest in changing their teaching practices that they have been using for years
now. With this problem within the Good Counsel community, I feel that my
workshop can be designed to tackle this problem for each of these reasons. My plan
is also to reach out to surrounding Montgomery County Public Schools and other
local private schools to offer the workshop to as well. Though these schools may
have other concerns, the focus on iPads and utilizing technology within the
classroom will be beneficial to all educators from all schools looking to expand their
technology practices.
Erickson - DTTP 3

The Needs
A common need among all teachers is having more time to accomplish the tasks
that will improve their impact in the classroom. In addition to offering teachers
more time, when asked teachers also feel that they would like more training on the
technology that is already offered at Good Counsel. There are Apple TVs in each
classroom allowing teachers to connect their laptop or iPads and display on the
front board. However not many teachers utilize this technology because they feel
uncomfortable using it and/or feel that the issues that arise when using it are not
worth the trouble.
I gave the following survey to a couple of my colleagues whom provided me the
following insight, along with some other information to best support the staff. With
these comments, feedback, and insight, I feel that Professional Development can
positively impact the majority of the Staff at Good Counsel- and I plan to align the
workshop to meet these needs.

1. Allocate time for teachers to discussion with one another about how they use
the iPads in the classroom to gain insight on what other colleagues are using
and what is or isnt working for them.
2. Educate staff on the use of Apple TV that is already offered in the classroom.
3. Trouble shoot technology and connection issues so teachers are more willing
to use the technology currently in the classroom.
4. Learn about content specific applications for student use to allow teachers to
gain more access to applications that are specific for their content area.
5. Introduce new applications as they come available to allow teachers to be up
to date with technology and the impact new applications can offer to the
students.
6. Offer training on Apple Classroom to monitor student behavior while they
use their iPads.
7. Introductory training for teachers who feel they have a low level of
understanding on iPad use.
Erickson - DTTP 4

8. Train staff on the use of Google Drive, which is our schools electronic storage
system.
9. Provide teachers will on-going training resources to continue beyond the
workshop experience.
10. Assess the school staff and identify expert teachers who can serve as a
continual support team for other staff members.

The Audience
The technology professional development will be presented to the entire
staff at Good Counsel. To consider the problem of time, I hope to schedule this
workshop during a professional day that Good Counsel would have for the teachers
and staff. I feel this is the best way to show the teachers the appreciation of their
time that Good Counsel has for them. During this workshop, I plan to separate the
staff based on the technology comfort level and ability. Each year there are new
teachers at Good Counsel who need to be educated on the technology that is in the
building and use on the iPads, I plan to group these teachers together with the
current teachers who have a limited knowledge base on using technology and the
iPads in the classroom. Another group would be teachers who have a moderate
level, and then an advanced level of comfort with using the iPads in the classroom.
For those teachers who are extremely advanced and utilize their iPads frequently in
the classroom, I plan to ask them to share their experiences and the applications
they find useful with the other staff members. This concept will bring relevance to
the professional development and therefore motivate other colleagues to try to
expand their use of the iPad. These groups will be formed from the survey that I
would have the staff complete prior to the workshop and will also inform me of the
specific needs each teacher would like to be addressed during the professional
development.

Goals and Objectives

Instructional Strategies
Though the subject manner for each need is different, I plan to approach each
day of the workshop in the same way. Through personal experience at Professional
Development workshops, I have found that instruction that contains first hand
demonstrations is the best way to keep the audience interested and motivated to try
the new concepts.
For the introduction and informational portion of the workshop I plan to use
my iPad and the Apple TV to demonstrate how I am able to continually move while
teaching. Even if the content is on how to use Apple Classroom, which is just a
Erickson - DTTP 7

monitoring application and not an interactive one, it is good to continue using the
iPad as a theme for the whole workshop.
I would like the majority of the time to be allocated for demonstrations, as
this way the teachers can see how it would look, along with the options they have
when using the particular application. I also plan to have discussion time so teachers
can brainstorm with other teachers and staff members to see how each person
envisions using the application in their classroom. Having attendance from different
grade levels from schools in the area will allow more ideas to come to light given
what technology their school offers different perspectives. This discussion
opportunity has benefitted me when it was incorporated into professional
development; the worst workshops were always the ones that were strictly lecture
style. I felt that I was just given information and being more of a visual learner I
know when I see something it allows me to put all the information into a vision for
myself.

Workshop Day 1
Natalie Erickson Using your iPad in your Classroom Day 1
Subject of the day: Apple Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers and staff attending
Classroom need to have the basic knowledge of how to turn on their
iPad and search for an application on the Apple store.
Content: This lesson will walk each staff member through how to navigate the use of
Apple Classroom. The course is more informational though a demonstration will be
given to introduce and then show how this application works. This application will be
highly recommended, if not mandatory for Good Counsel members, to use as an iPad
monitoring system for the students. Apple Classroom allows teachers to guide their
students through lessons, view their progress, and keep students on track. This
application will help teachers create an educational and positive environment for iPad
use during the lesson.
Objectives:
o Staff will be able to import their student class list into Apple Classroom.
Erickson - DTTP 8

o Staff will be able to navigate the different resources Apple Classroom allows
them to control.
o Staff will be able to test this application to have a full understanding of use.
How will you teach the lesson?
1. Introduce the application and its purpose.
2. Have staff members turn their Bluetooth on their iPads on.
3. Ask them to search for a picture of their favorite hobby.
4. Using the Apple TV and projector, I will project my iPad screen and show them
that I can see what they are searching for. I feel that this element of surprise will
show the staff members the ultimate purpose of this application, monitoring
students.
5. Have the staff members download the application from the Apple Store.
6. Log in and verify your class list and roster are correct. I will upload these prior
to the workshop.
7. With each staff member having the application open, describe the purpose of
each of the symbols on this application.
8. Allow time for discussion and questions. I hope teachers can share how they will
see this application use in their classroom and discuss how this will benefit their
current iPad disciplinary issues.
9. Handout the worksheet that covers the main points of todays presentation and
point out my contact information at the bottom of the worksheet for any
questions staff members may have after this course.
Additional Materials and how they will be used:
o iPads
o Apple TV
o LCD Projector
o Class lists and rosters (to be uploaded prior to the workshop)
Evaluation Strategies: After this workshop class I plan to send the teachers a survey.
Here are some of the questions I would ask;
1. Did you find the information given about Apple Classroom helpful?
Erickson - DTTP 9

2. Do you see yourself using Apple Classroom in you classroom? If so, how often/
when?
3. Did all of your questions get answered about Apple Classroom?
4. Do you feel that the presentation kept your attention and motivation?
5. Do you know how to go about and who to ask if you have any questions after
todays workshop?
6. Please list any suggestions for the instructor.

Workshop Day 2
Natalie Erickson Using your iPad in your Day 2
Classroom
Subject of the day: Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers and staff attending
Notability need to have the basic knowledge of how to turn on their
iPad and search for an application on the Apple store.
Content: This course introduces the application Notability. Notability is a simple to use
note taking and PDF annotation application. Teachers will learn how to set up their
Notability account, upload a PDF file and use the note taking tools. Teachers should
leave this course and be able to dive right into using Notability in their classrooms.
Objectives:
o Staff will be able to use Notability successfully.
o Staff will be able to have students using Notability in the classroom.
How will you teach the lesson?
1. Using my iPad and the Apple TV I will project a worksheet on the front board.
The worksheet will be shown in Notability.
2. I will then begin to discuss how important it is for teachers to have mobility
within their classroom. I will discuss the interactivity benefits and the discipline
benefits as well. While I explain this, I will be walking around and writing on the
worksheet, showing the staff members the easy and ability of using this
Application.
3. Staff members will download Notability to their iPads.
Erickson - DTTP 10

4. Then I will have staff members download a PDF file of my choosing from Google
Drive and ask them to upload it to Notability.
5. I will walk each member through each of the tools that they can use on
Notability and then show them the sharing opportunities with the file.
6. Time will be given to answer any questions that may arise along with the closing
survey.
Additional Materials and how they will be used:
o iPads
o Apple TV
o LCD Projector
Evaluation Strategies: I will use a survey to evaluate how my staff members felt about
the presentation and the content of this lesson. Their feedback will give me the
opportunity to see what I did well and need to work on and the questions that I left
unanswered.

Workshop Day 3
Natalie Erickson Using your iPad in your Day 3
Classroom
Subject of the day: Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers and staff attending
You Tube need to have the basic knowledge of how to turn on
their iPad and search for an application on the Apple
store.
Content: YouTube has many different educational purposes. A good way to grab
attention of my students is with an introductory video. Teachers are also created
content videos themselves. With the many applications of YouTube this lesson will
explain several of these. This lesson will also explain the option that teachers have
to create their own channel. Offering the opportunity for students to have access to
all content videos can be very beneficial. A flipped learning style will also be
addressed within this course.
Objectives:
Erickson - DTTP 11

o Teachers will create their own YouTube channel to use with their students.
o Teachers will know how to create and upload a video.
o Teachers will successfully be able to use YouTube as a class resource.
o Teaching will have the knowledge in using YouTube in flipping their
classroom.
How will you teach the lesson?
1. Teachers will be shown how beneficial technology in the classroom can be
through watching this video https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyz6-
taovlaOkPsPtK4KNEg?v=y17l-hxFz1M.
2. I will transition this video to showing the different way that YouTube can be
used in the classroom. I will focus on basics of getting started with YouTube,
how to create your own YouTube channel, and how video notes can flip your
classroom.
3. The group will be divided in to three groups covering these three topics. A
presenter will be at each of these stations to cover the material.
4. Members will switch their group a third of the way through the workshop to
have the opportunity to learn from each presentation.
5. This class will end with the class creating a Padlet sharing their individual
ideas about how YouTube will benefit them in their classroom. This Padlet
will then be shared with all members in the course.
Additional Materials and how they will be used:
o iPads
o Apple TV
o LCD Projector
o Padlet
Evaluation Strategies: A class Padlet where members share their ideas of how
YouTube will help their teaching philosophies will be the evaluation strategy of this
course. The different perspectives of each member will explain the level of
understanding and creativity this class has supported them in. This will also be sent
out to the entire group to have access to all ideas presented.
Erickson - DTTP 12

Workshop Day 4
Natalie Erickson Using your iPad in your Classroom Day 4
Subject of the day: Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers and staff attending need
PlayPosit to have an understanding on how to navigate online videos
and have a desire or need to incorporate video notes into
their teaching pedagogy.
Content: This lesson will introduce teachers to PlayPosit. How the application works
will be explained followed by the opportunity to show the staff members the student
and teacher view of this application. Members will be given time to create their own
PlayPosit video and then share with other members so the full use of this application is
attempted. This application will enhance current videos teachers are using or motivate
teachers to use videos within their pedagogy. PlayPosit allows teachers to not only
monitor their students viewing the video but also increase the interaction of the
students and course work.
Objectives:
o Staff will have a full understanding of how PlayPosit works for both the teacher
and student perspective.
o Staff will be given an opportunity to create an account and create an interactive
video to have a full understanding on how this application functions.
o Staff will be able to share and watch a video created by other staff to ensure the
application process is being completed correctly.
How will you teach the lesson?
1. The lesson will begin with a video to grab the attention of the staff members. The
video explains a quick overview of the key concepts that this application,
PlayPosit, offers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8l8TRevbM4
2. Then more descriptive explanation will be given as I walk the staff through the
concept of the application. I will use my iPad and project it on the front screen
with the Apple TV.
3. I will have the staff members join my classroom, as they were my students so
they can see the student view of how these interactive videos work. They will
Erickson - DTTP 13

watch a video and answer the questions that I have embedded into it.
4. Then I will show them the teacher view of how I can see who has completed the
assignment, the answers to the questions, and any questions that students may
have posted.
5. Time will be given for staff members to create their own account and create an
interactive video. I will be answering questions will be answered during this
workshop time.
6. Class will end with any other questions that havent been answered along with a
PlayPosit Survey video to get feedback on the workshop.
Additional Materials and how they will be used:
o iPads
o Apple TV
o LCD Projector
Evaluation Strategies: I will have the members complete a survey but through the
format of a PlayPosit video. This will be completed towards the end of the lesson so
members are still logged in to my PlayPosit classroom. I will use an explanatory video of
what PlayPosit is so this video also will serve as a resource that can be accessed at a
later time. Throughout the video I will embed questions about the presentation and
how they feel about using this application with their students.

Workshop Day 5
Natalie Erickson Using your iPad in your Day 5
Classroom
Subject of the day: Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers and staff attending
Nearpod need to have the basic knowledge of how to turn on
their iPad and search for an application on the Apple
store.
Content: Nearpod is an application that will take any presentation and make it
interactive. Teachers will learn how they can differentiation their lesson by allowing
students to work at their own pace on the material, even the main presentation.
Erickson - DTTP 14

Nearpod changes the way a teacher will lecture.

Objectives:
o Staff will learn how to set up and create a Nearpod presentation.
o Staff will convert a current power point presentation and make it into a
Nearpod presentation.
o Staff will be able to compare Nearpod to other presentation tools and decide
which one they feel bests suits their teaching philosophy.
How will you teach the lesson?
1. I will begin this lesson addressing one of the toughest aspects of a teachers
role each day of differentiation. The importance of differentiation will be the
motivation for the application Nearpod.
2. Using my iPad and Apple TV I will use the audience as my students and have
them sign in to my Nearpod presentation. This will be my first hand
opportunity for my staff to see how interactive this application can be and
how it allows the students to work at their own pace.
3. After the staff has seen the student perspective of this application, I will give
them time to work independently while conversing with one another. I will
have them begin by using a PowerPoint that they already have created and
then add to it. If they dont have one created, I will share one with them that I
have created.
4. Using my iPad, I will then AirPlay some of the presentations of those who
would like to share them with the group. I hope this raises a lot of questions
and discussions about how others see this being used in their classroom.
5. I will finish by explaining some of the other aspects of this application, for
instance, Nearpod Presentations can be shared among colleagues. I will
provide them with a handout that covers all of these details but due to the
complexities of this application.
Additional Materials and how they will be used:
o iPads
o Apple TV
Erickson - DTTP 15

o LCD Projector
o PowerPoint presentation
Evaluation Strategies: I plan to survey the class to get a feel on how the presentation
and content made them feel. I plan to give a survey at the beginning of the lesson as
well as the end. The beginning survey will ask them about how they lecture and
present information and if they feel that is it an effective way. Then the ending
survey will ask similar questions geared towards Nearpod and if they feel that will
help them be more efficient and effective. Comparing these two survey results will
give me good feedback about this application and how I presented it.

Field Test
To ensure that everything is in place for this workshop to occur, I plan to go
through each part of each day. I plan to run through these days, as I was a guest
from the very beginning of walking into the school and then into the classroom to
each specific workshop topic. I also would ask colleagues to run through this dry
run with me so I am able to give them each assignment and survey to ensure the
technology in the classroom is working, and each link to any survey is also working.
I also would love their feedback on my explanations of each lesson, for constructive
and academic purposes.
I will also check with the janitorial staff, and school, that all classrooms and
bathrooms are open and that I have the correct amount of desks where they need to
be in each classroom and also at the front of the school to welcome and register each
Erickson - DTTP 17

attendee. I plan to do this a couple days prior to the workshop to give myself time if
there is an issue that I run into.

Revision
After I complete my field test, I will be making any revisions that need to be
made. Again, completing my field test a couple days before the workshop verses just
one day in advance, will give me time to make adjustments because it would be
difficult to know how hard or long these adjustments will be. I will also plan to have
time during work or at home to make these adjustments. The feedback from my
colleagues who help me run through my workshop will also weigh in when making
changes.

Evaluations
Throughout the workshop, I have the members taking surveys for each of the
lessons. Though those will be extremely helpful and detailed for those particular
lessons I would love feedback of the whole workshop. To respect the time of the
members who attend this workshop, I will be sure to take the contact information
from registration and send another survey about the workshop- as a whole. This
survey would go out to all attendees, elementary, middle, high, public and private
school teachers and other staff who attended.
I would ask questions such as,
o Did you find this workshop beneficial? If so, what was your biggest take
away?
o Did you get introduced to an application that you plan on using within your
classroom / teaching methods?
o Please list any questions you still may have for Mrs. Erickson.
o What was your favorite part of this workshop?
o What was your least favorite part of this workshop?
o Please list suggestions that you have.
Erickson - DTTP 18

o Would you attend another technology workshop that Good Counsel has to
offer? If so, would you invite other colleagues from your school to attend
with you?
o What do you hope to learn next time?

Summative Evaluation
After sending out the survey evaluating the workshop I plan to keep up the
correspondence between all members who have attended. I will send monthly or
every other month I will send an email checking in with members on how
implementing their ideas are going. This will demonstrate my support for all of
those who attended the workshop as well as show me how successful the workshop
was.
After checking in with members, I will be able to gain insight on how their
implementation process is going. At this point, I would ask to visit their schools to
first hand see their implementation. I feel that they would respond well to this
suggestion because I can also help them or guide them through any other ideas that
may come up as I observe their classroom. This process could also teach me
something to share with my colleagues.
These observations could also help me brainstorm for what I would like to
present at the following years workshop. I would get this opportunity through the
first hand experience of seeing technology use in the classroom. I also would be
creating a positive relationship with those who attended so they can share their
experiences with others as well.

Follow Up
Prior to the workshop I surveyed the attendees for their technology needs
and interests and also have surveys throughout the workshop. With this feedback I
feel that I will have the information I need to make adjustments for this workshop in
the future as well as plan a follow up workshop as well. I would love to grow this
workshop into multiple parts. Next year I would hold the same workshop, with edits
made from feedback, but then I would also want to plan a part two workshop that
offers different objectives and new applications that have come out in the last year.
Another follow up that I would do would be to check in with those who
attended. I plan to send them a survey about the workshop, which asks them if they
have any questions that went unanswered, this is where I would start. I want those
who attended to feel supported and by answering their questions I hope to be a
constant resource for them. I also would send periodic emails out to all who
attended the workshop and offer any new tips or news that have come out about the
applications I introduced with them. I want everyone who attended to feel
supported and feel that they can contact me at anytime for help and advice with any
of their classroom technology needs. Maybe one day they will be my expert
presenters.
