In the 10 weeks of industrial training at Chemlite Industry,I have earned a lot of hands on
experience in a typical chemical industry. I have gained many valuable knowledge and I
strongly believe that these priceless experience will help in my future career. However, there
are many challenges that I have gone through and I find that some of the aspects can be further
improved.

Firstly, due limited space of the company, the IQA Department is not only dealing with
incoming materials, but it act as an outgoing warehouse for finished products to customers.
Loading and unloading of raw materials and products happen in the same place, making the
place often crowded and warm. Meanwhile, the temporary storage places are all well-marked
with tapes. This gives differentiable signals between the walk ways and side store place and
such act fulfils the 5S system requirement.

One of the major concern in a chemical industry is safety and health of the employee. The
workers here have relatively low safety awareness for the environment and themselves. For
instance, pouring concentrated chemicals with bare hand and without wearing proper personal
protective equipment (PPE). This could be due to inefficient Health, Safety and Environmental
(HSE) briefing or no proper inspection by the HSE Officer during the production. In my
opinion, I would suggest more trainings and information should be given to the employee to
show the importance of safety.

On the other hand, miscommunication often happens between the higher management team
and employees in the workplace. Majority of the workers here are foreign labours from
Myanmar, Nepal and Vietnam. They cannot communicate fluently in English or Bahasa
Malaysia and that makes them sometimes hard to understand instructions from supervisors
clearly. Also, the workers may work differently when there is no control or supervision from
leaders.

Additionally, the duration of the training is very short which is not viable for practitioners to
let the trainee handle a project more comprehensively. The longer duration would give the
students more time to explore and experience on the project. Besides that, it will be more
beneficial, giving more exposure to the trainers to allow them to understand the flow of project.

In conclusion, I personally feel that this company is not so appropriate to work for as an
engineer. This company has no much of the technological equipment as what a real chemical
plant has. However, I still can see and learn some of the basic engineering-related equipment
here. I appreciate the chances given by my supervisor and company to learn and apply part of
the knowledge.
