What is a book review?
A book review helps people decide whether or not
to read a book.

Readers of book reviews look for particular kinds of

information.

They want to know the reviewers opinion,

information about the content of the book, and
what the characters, plot, and setting are and do
in the story.

Why write a book review?

Its because readers turn to book reviews to help

them make decisions about which book to read.

Your purpose is to write a review of informing the

readers giving them specific information they
need to make their decisions.

Its important to use humor, sarcasm, or seriousness

depending on the type of book you are reviewing.
Components to keep in mind
Plot: The plot is what happens in a story. It is the
sequence of events that occur. Most plots follow a
specific order. First characters are introduced, and the
reader finds out what the conflict is. As the story moves
along, the conflict is solved, and the story reaches
its resolution.

Character: A character is a person or animal in a story.

Main characters play important roles in the events of the
story. Minor characters appear only now and then to
support the actions of the main characters.

Setting: The setting is where and when a literary work

takes place. The setting is usually described toward the
beginning of the work.

Theme: The theme is the main message that an author

wants to communicate to a reader. It is not the same as
the subject, which can often be described with just one
word, such as friendship or childhood. The theme is a
statement about the subject. A story about friendship, for
example, might have this theme: A true friend sees you
through thick and thin.

Main idea: A nonfiction selection has a main idea. The

main idea of a book about tornadoes might be this:
Tornadoes are unpredictable and extremely destructive
storms.
Summary of story

It may seem impossible to summarize all that

information into one or two paragraphs.

Keep in mind, though, that you do not want to

tell everything about your book in your book
review.

For a summary of a fiction work, you want to

briefly retell the story.

However, you do not want to give away the

ending.

You want to give the reader a general idea of

what the book is about.

You want your reader to have enough

information to make a decision on whether or
not to read the book.
