LESSON INTRODUCTION: (2 points)

Today we are going to practice one of the Six Traits of Writing, Word Choice, by using strong
vocabulary or as we are going to call it, Banana Split Words.

TEACHER INSTRUCTION: (2 points)

Word Choice is one of the parts of Six Trait Writing. Using Word Choice in our writing means
that we use a strong vocabulary. We briefly discussed this last time, but having a strong
vocabulary means that you use banana split words instead of just regular ordinary vanilla words.
An example of a vanilla word is good. Good is an overused word that does not give the reader
a clear understanding of the authors feelings. Some examples of words you could use instead of
good would be, robust, sturdy, strong, vigorous. We can receive a much stronger picture in
our head when we hear that the workout was vigorous, instead of hearing that the workout was
good. Using Word Choice in our writing also helps our writing to be natural but with a fresh
twist. We want our writing to sound normal but we want it to also be interesting and grab the
readers attention.

To improve your writing you should strive to use strong but appropriate vocabulary in your
everyday writing. An excellent way to do this is to always remember to use banana split words.
After you write a sentence if you realized you used a word like good or said brainstorm and
think of another word that could go there instead. This will help your readers have a better
understanding and will make your writing much more enjoyable to read.

Lets look at the this list of examples of banana split adjectives that we can use in our writing.
-> Students will read over and discuss list of words and their meanings

We are going to practice using strong vocabulary today by writing a script for our very own
fashion show. We are going to be the models of this fashion show. Each of you will write a
paragraph using your Word Choice skills to describe the outfit you are wearing as if you are a
model that is walking down the runway. You must use your best announcer voice and at least
five banana split words to describe your walk down the runway. When you are finished, you will
get the chance to practice your runway skills while I read aloud what you wrote.

Before we begin, lets take a look at some words that you might hear at a Fashion Show.
->Students will look at and talk about the words listed as well as add in some of their own

To give you an idea of what your description should sound like, I am going to read you a few
examples. These are actual descriptions that I wrote for a charity fashion show last fall. Pay
attention to banana split words that are used and see if you can catch any vanilla words that are
in the descriptions.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: (2 points)After hearing the examples, students will give
examples of banana split words that they heard used. They will also point out any vanilla words
that were used as well and give an example of a banana split word that could be used in its place.
APPLICATION/GUIDED PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: (2 points)
Students will work together with the teacher to describe the Teachers outfit. Then they will
write their own model description. They will use at least five banana split words to describe their
outfits and the way they are walkingdown the runway. The teacher will then read the students
descriptions of themselves (in their best announcer voice) while the student walks down the mini
runway in our area.

CLOSURE: (2 points)
Today we practiced Word Choice by using strong vocabulary also known as banana split words.
These will help your writing become more descriptive and interesting to the reader. You can use
banana split words in your everyday writing as well as when you are having a conversation with
someone. It makes both your writing and speaking more captivating when you use Word Choice.
I invite you to try to use your Word Choice skills as often as you can!

Fashion Show Examples:

-Our first model showing off her 54 Feed and Seed accessories is Grace Jackson. She is sporting
a woven brown and black patterned shawl with jewelry that makes it dazzle. The free flowing
gold earrings and wide chevron bracelet give just the right amount of class to this natural, earthy
look. The necklace drops a cluster of bronze chains at just the right spot to accent her lovely
shape. The crossbody purse from Montana West completes the subtleness with the faded red
suede fringe but still offers a fun flair to this conservative, classy look.

-of Her scarf is embellished with subtle sparkles in a triangular pattern echoing the geometric
shapes in the vest. She topped this outfit off with a pair of brown dangling cross earrings that
glimmer in the light. Her purse is a small tooled leather clutch with a strap that can be carried
alone for quick trips into the grocery store or inside a coordinating Montana West purse for date
night.

-Fall colors couldnt be displayed any better than this look Mallorie Owen is presenting tonight.
She has incorporated browns, oranges, and reds in her classy, cozy vest and complimented all of
the autumn colors perfectly with the turquoise accents. The large cross necklace looks fantastic
under the vest and the cross theme is repeated in her earrings. Wrapped around her wrist is a tan
bracelet continuing the earthy, natural feel with its braided leather. The red fringed purse sets a
bold statement yet can be toted with ease by its single strap.

-Always looking for fun, Courtney Smith sparkles in this gold vest. Her necklace is made up of
a strand of beads and silver links. Her crossbody bag is black leather, with a classy colorful
weave and fun and flowing fringe . The flash of red at the top of her boots are handmade cuffs,
knitted by Patricia Langford and available at 54 Feed & Seed.

-Megan Payne is really rocking the stage in her red, white and black thick, knitted scarf. She is
carrying a simple, classic brown tooled leather wallet with silver nail-head accents. Her arm is
adorned in a series of silver chevron bangle bracelets and her necklace is a pop of red with a
string of beads versatile enough to go with many choices of holiday ensembles.
