Preface
English has been influenced over the years by other languages, such as Arabic, French, German, Greek, Latin, Indian, and the Scandinavian languages. Each one of them has contributed to the richness of this widely spoken language.
When learning a language or skill, it helps to simplify our approach by grasping the fundamentals. English, like any other language, is quite simply made up of words. These words are used to describe the world around us and to express our opinions and emotions.
One of the aims of this book is to provide, in a nutshell, the parts of speech and punctuations used to communicate in this popular language. Understanding the basic rules of spelling and grammar, developing your vocabulary, and applying the knowledge will help you become a more fluent speaker and writer of English.
Anyone about to take an English grammar test will find the user-friendly information provided in this book valuable.
The other purpose of this book is to provide you with the vocabulary required for success in your verbal reasoning test.
It is a practical book that you can confidently use to increase your word power. The knowledge gained by learning the contents of this book will reduce the time spent in answering questions and improve the level of accuracy.
It is a handy tool that includes important components of the eleven-plus entrance tests in one single book. This book is an essential resource for anyone about to take a verbal reasoning test because it will help you to succeed in your test. It will also benefit anyone going through an employment related selection process or simply interested in improving their English grammar and verbal reasoning skills. All the sections of the book have been presented in a comprehensible and alphabetical format.
The book is divided into three parts, namely, personal dictionary, English grammar, and other important lists of words.
The personal dictionary section of the book provides words that have been arranged alphabetically. These words have been carefully chosen to include important elements of the Key Stage 2 syllabus. This section includes a separate list of four-letter words. Questions requiring the knowledge of four letter words often appear in verbal reasoning tests. These bank of words have been provided so that the reader becomes more familiar with them. Spaces are provided so that the reader can learn and add new words with their respective meaning.
The second part focuses on the fundamentals of English grammar. It commences with the alphabets, explains the various parts of speech, and describes the different symbols. Information on the formulation and usage of each one is given, and some examples are provided.
The third section is the bank of words that the reader will find useful to learn and use daily. The words have been arranged under their respective categories, such as antonyms, compound words, homophones, prefixes, similes, suffixes, countries and their capital cities, names of animals and their young as well as the names of the male and female species of these animals.
This book includes the following:
• Over 6,000 key words, some of which are words that are difficult to spell. Alphabetic lists of four-letter words have been specifically included to aid learning them.
• A set of general knowledge questions for each alphabetical section.
• A succinct description with examples of the key components of grammar.
• An alphabetical list of animals, countries, professions, fruits, vegetables, and games.
