The Mid-year review

Vinod is a Senior Mechanical Engineer working in the Production Unit of ABC Limited. He is a sincere and
promising individual who had joined ABC Limited straight from campus five years back. Since then, he has been
performing well in his role. During the goal setting earlier this year, he was the one from his team who had taken
up ambitious goals for himself.

Santosh is a Manager at ABC Limited. He had joined ABC Limited nine years back and is known for his people
management skills. He leads a small team of four senior officers. One of them is Vinod. Each Senior Mechanical
Engineer again has a team of 3-4 Mechanical engineers under them. These engineers are young graduates with an
average experience of 2 years each.

During the goal setting, Vinod had taken up goals around capacity utilization, quality of products, cost
effectiveness and subordinate development. Vinods goal sheet looked like as shown below:

Sl. no. Goals Targets Initiatives

1 Tonnage for stream day for 5 Metric Ton Per Day Assisting in implementing
urea modernized techniques at urea
plant

2 % of products that meet 98% Introduce additional quality checks

specification at intermediate levels

consumed regularly, initiating new schemes for
reduction of power/steam

4 No. of hours of training for 20 annually Follow the training schedule drawn
subordinates by ABC.

One month after the Goal setting process was closed; ABC took up a new construction project at a new site in
outskirts of town. Vinod was the mechanical engineer who was nominated to work on this project along with
other members from across functions. Over the past few months, he has been putting in lots of energy and time
into this project work. This project is 18 months long project. The Project Manager, Mr. Ram Sharma is very
impressed with Vinods performance on the project site. He has even mentioned this to Santosh.

However, due to this large scale project that ABC has undertaken, the top management has decided to hold the
modernization plans of some plants on a hold for the time being. There are rumours that these plans are
indefinitely postponed and might never happen this year at all. These rumours have been playing on Vinods
mind for some time now.

While Santosh is happy about the performance of Vinod on the project that he has been assigned to, there have
been a few instances of SLA slippages in Vinods team over the last two months. These two months have also seen
Vinod less in the plant and more on the project site because of the demanding nature of the work in the project at
this stage. Hence, he has been largely communicating with his team through mails. Earlier, this used to happen
through face-to-face discussions between him and his subordinates. After talking to Vinods subordinates,
Santosh found that they are sometimes, facing problem interpreting the mails Vinod writes to them. Hence, they
wait till they clarify things on calls with Vinod before taking any action. This is leading to SLA slippages. Santosh
definitely wants to discuss this with Vinod.

Now, here comes the time for Mid-year review. Both Vinod and Santosh have received mails from HR on this.
Santosh has invited Vinod for a meeting tomorrow at 10:30 AM. Vinod also has confirmed the meeting.

What are the focus points for review for the appraiser and the appraisee? State clearly with rationale.
